BIL wrote:It would be amusing if someone could gut a mint SNES RPG box, replace the contents with a delicious egg and cress sandwich, reseal it and have it certified 100% FRESH by the VGA, then engineer an obscenely-priced auction win and unboxing video posted to major news sites. The sealed game faithful would riot. It'd probably kick off some kind of sectarian bloodbath between progressive "just a peek to make sure it's not a sandwich!" types and the ultra-orthodox remnants who will permit no mortal eyes to defile their sacred, mass-produced relics.

Then again, some fuck would just invent a VGA X-RAY SCANNER for detecting sandwich-bearing boxes. But you could wrap the sandwich in X-Ray proof film shaped like a SNES cart. Although DEA canine units could probably get around that. It's a real psychological rabbit hole, this hobby of paying for the privilege of never coming into contact with the contents of boxes.
On the back of all this sealed game debate, it's probably apt to post this:

I don't think there's a debate to be had, really (certainly isn't one here). It'd come down to either live and let sealed collectors live or deal with 'em:

I do genuinely find the pursuit a bit sad as I used to be of a similar cellophane-fetishising mindset, but you can't help these people (fun to take the piss though!). At least they don't like getting their knackers nailed to the floor like those dudes in R v Brown.

I was going to make a comment about getting the Japanese version, but this is all about collecting. I'm kind of an odd hybrid. I love games, but I want them in as good as condition as I can find them(within reason). So, a lot of people think I'm a collector, which really isn't accurate.

If I was, I'd be broke...as some of these auctions show.

WELL...I think I'm going to go ahead and get that 5000 dollar version of Secret of Mana...that price is just too good to pass up!

Since usually in terms of presentation (certainly for Hagane's gorgeous Keita Amemiya designs) SFC boxes > Uncle Ben's > SNES boxes, it would indeed make more sense to nab a mint+complete JP ver for way cheaper. It's actually a great game too.

...but SFC games were never sealed... D:

I'm this way too. I wouldn't complain if the only available copies were bare carts in ziplock bags, as long as they worked (primary objective). But I love the obvious care that went into a lot of pre-cd/dvd game packaging. When done well it complements the quality of the games themselves. Assault Suits Valken and Vampire Killer's vivid covers aren't Master System placeholder crap. Zero Wing's MD manual is outrageously loud and vibrant, almost a mini-artbook. I only buy games I intend to play the living hell out of, meaning not many, so I don't mind waiting a bit for a good copy to appear.

This is why I regard the cellophane fetish as particularly dumb. Keep that content sealed away from human eyes and hands and it may as well be featureless pvc and paperstock. That you've paid for the honour of taking up space in your house!

tldr: play your games goddamn it. and read the manuals! there's some cool stuff in there! "oh noes what about fingerprints lololol" STFU, YOUR STUPID FINGERS ARE GONNA ROT IN THE GRAVE, THEN YOU'LL WISH YOU'D TOUCHED MORE STUFF WHILE YOU STILL HAD 'EM. OR A BEAR COULD BITE YOUR HANDS CLEAN THE FUCK OFF. :O

Also, Complete Game & Watch collection.

A complete G&W collection is very valuable, but that price is retarded. As is the Stack Up, that gave me some good belly laughs. In-fact it's brought me a smile that will probably last all day just thinking about the guy who spent EIGHTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS on it. Ha Ha! What a fucking idiot! :D

its alot of money but honestly, a complete G&W collection in good condition will cost a mint and alot of time to find.. you could proboably press the price no problem but youd have to give it a few years of searching aswell.

Loved the shot of those sealed cokes at the end, perfectly sums things up. Great intro too, perfectly captures the innate psychological horror of paying large sums for things you'll never verify the existence of.

Stack Up looks like a terrible game, and that's even assuming you have a working R.O.B. You could have the exact same game with simply a digital, on-screen R.O.B. and it'd be the same game, minus the "you have to buy this robot add-on" gimmick. And the price, hah, I've seen amazing works of art or first edition literature go for less.

If 18k $ wasn't enough money to spend on ONE sealed NES game, here's Bubble Bobble Part 2.
This game is actually pretty rare. So is the price.

Or how about a brand new NES system with ROB!

My god.

I don't give a crap what anyone says, this sort of bullshit is incredibly bad for hobbyists. I have a large collection of games, I'm happy to see them appreciate in value: but that's not the reason why I bought them in the first place. These sealed game collectors and VG graders are literally pulling prices out of thin air: the marketplace for sealed and new games hasn't really been established long enough to have accumulated this kind of worth. It's like it just turned up one day.

They're using eBay as a platform to fabricate an incredibly overpriced market, and no doubt make killings off of idiots by resealing stuff and selling it as new.

That Rob NES with 2 offers on it: it's not really 'new' is it? It might be 'like new', but since it comes from the 1990's it's actually just new old stock. And even then, it could just be very well looked after.

I'm not sure how NOS, which only three years ago was regularly hovering around eBay for a reasonable 25% mark-up, suddenly leapt into tens of thousands of dollars. :|

It kind of reminds me of that scene in "This Is Spinal Tap" when that 18" Stonehenge replica descends onto the stage and the band is like wtf?!?; that's probably the feeling some ninny who orders that will have taking it out of the "large envelope"...expecting the 1/60 scale model.

I make it a point to write a review and state that the series is good and can be had for free by downloading it off BitTorrent. Thus, bypassing the video scalpers 8)

Not any old DVD's:
"Card Captor Sakura is one of the sweetest, gentlest and just plain LOVELIEST anime of all time. It was one of the founders that threw Mahou Shoujo (magical girl) anime into the spotlight, and is CLAMP at their best."
Sounds reeaally great. Must put time aside to watch to watch sweetest, gentlest and loveliest anime of all time.

Or could just watch more Hokuto no Ken instead.

I cringe for people who don't do their research before dropping big $ on that stuff. I've seen multiple "statues" that were $3 gashapon sold for over $70. Scalawags, I tell you.

Although my original impression (some days ago when I first read this) was that the SNES version actually allows some more detail in that section of the art. For sure, the SFC version is a more appealing package, since it shows the whole artwork - but I wonder if the SNES version might be more detailed in what it does show.

Main thing for me is the SFC cover's vertical orientation + formatting, with Hagane himself powerfully foregrounded against a rising backdrop of baddies culminating in Big Robot Head and his trademark Noh face at top centre. Just look at how Badass Rival Dude and Sassy Kunoichi Bitch get decapitated on the SNES box, and the other bosses are nowhere to be seen. SNES does show more detail on Hagane's left shoulder, but the logo is practically throttling him and it's bordered.

I own the SFC one, and owned the SNES cart, and never noticed this. I always thought the SNES one had a little more of the art in it. Guess I was wrong.

Anyone else here prefer getting SFC games, if possible...if only because it's easier to get them in good condition? I mean, how many times have you ordered a game that's "Very Good" from a U.S. seller, and it comes in looking like little Billy in 96 took a shit on it?
