Nice article on 2D games with Treasure quoes in Sept NP
After hearing they'd revamped their format greatly I decided to try a free 3 issue sample subscription to Nintendo Power recently and have been pleasantly surprised (I always thought it was a decent mag and it has a soft spot of nostalgia for the 'younger gamer' in me but hadn't felt a need to subscribe in 5 years with theinternet and all ya know?) The content overall is much more focused and it has excellent interviews (last month's interview with Koji Kondo an example) I always thought the reviews were for the most part seemingly unbiased but this month they prove it, Geist got trashed with a 5.0. ha
This month they have an article on "Why developers keep going back to 2D games" and it has some nice quotes from Masato Maegawa on why he personally feels 2D gameplay is easier to execute, not to mention a nice Gunstar Heroes preview with side by side pictures of the GBA game and the Genny classic to show how the graphics have improved (to a degree)

Yeah, they bent over backwards to pimp and defend the weaknesses of any Nintendo-published title back in the day...I let my subscription (which I'd had since '92 or so) expire a little ways before the GC came out, though it wasn't so much because of the mag's bias than the fact that there simply wasn't much coming out on Nintendo consoles that I was interested in. If they're adjusting their approach then I suppose that's a good thing...still not gonna resubscribe though, almost everything I buy these days is an import, heh.
If I remember correctly, later NPs actually got the developers of the games mixed up and said that the Earthworm Jim was from the makers of the SNES Aladdin or something along those lines. I like the SNES Aladdin, but the Genesis version stomps it hard.Ganelon wrote:Yeah, I remember when NP claimed that Capcom's SNES Aladdin was superior to Virgin's SG Aladdin...

I just remember that E3 thing many years back "Haha, nobody wanted to look at Sony's booth so they had to pack up early". I bought into the N64 hype back then too, I was quite the ignorant Nintendo fanboy (so I didn't notice anything weird with NP, it's the word of God after all). Worst mistake ever.
Arr cap'n, folks don't be callin' me iatneH for nothing!
I nabbed it off some other forum (without asking...), but if anyone wants to use it you're perfectly welcome, I just wanted to shock you people a little bit, but I'm fond of my goldfish avatar from before too...

Haha. Yeah I remember the "nobody wanted to look at Sony's booth thing," that was lame. Other debacles were the "Project reality" campaign and a terrible article from a '94 article that was anti-CDROM. Yeah, that's right, a whole article on why CDROMs are evil. I could dig it up if I wanted. It summed it all up as "Ohhhh loading times are bad, blah blah." Then the article closedwith (I kid you not): "So the next time someone tells you the future belongs to CDROMs, tell them the future doesn't belong to snails." lol Wow Yeah, and that was a couple years before all the third parties left for Sony.
Er, yeah. So the new issue is good.
I think the big heydey was the early Nester and SMW and Zelda LttP comics. In fact, I was reading the very first issue and it had a "What's happening in Japan" article featuring the release of DW III anda pick of long lines to get it. Kinda nifty.

Screw you guys... Capcom's Aladdin is better!Ganelon wrote:Yeah, I remember when NP claimed that Capcom's SNES Aladdin was superior to Virgin's SG Aladdin...
Less eye candy, so what? It still looks nice, has better controls and better level design. Virgin Games is an amazing company: anyone can make a 3D game with a bad camera, but they manage to fuck up the camera in a 2D, side-scrolling game, that's a feat!
*blood boils*
All that Nintendo BS is still prevalent in Mexico. I recall how they pimped the utter rotten carcass covered in turds that was the Tom and Jerry SNES game, while they laughed at Sega for only having 64 colors. And their "Futuristic" Starfox.. blah. Virtua Racing PWNED it. With octogonal wheels.
(Anyone want to know why I emigrated to the USA? )
