You go to a place that has a large collection of ancient books and such. Even if they're so old that you're not allowed to actually open the books, good collections will have the contents available scanned or on microfiche or something. A comic book collector on the other hand might have a sealed copy of an old first-edition, but unless they have a copy of the scanned interior, what happens if someone wants to read it? They wouldn't unseal it; all you'd get to look at is the cover.

A collection that's rendered useless by the collection method, that is by leaving them sealed, seems like a rather useless collection. A collection of video games can be used and still be kept in near mint condition, you can show the games to your friends, but a sealed collection? They're just pretty boxes; if opening them to play or read the instruction manual is against the 'rules' then they really might as well be empty game boxes wrapped in plastic to the collector, but then I'm the type that believes things ought to be used to be appreciated. I've heard of people buying multiple copies of a game they love in case the first copy breaks, so they have the second sealed one to play as a backup which sounds reasonable though.

Could be wrong, but I don't get the impression there's that many people on that sealed games site that are collecting purely to jack the price up on the games by taking them out of circulation in order to resell to gamers at a profit, but rather simply like showing off shelves full of plastic-wrapped paperweights they'll never open and experience for themselves, and thereby never be able to actually appreciate the contents, which is quite sad. Although there are people apparently who buy and reseal games to try and fool people into thinking the games they're buying are factory sealed, an issue when people become obsessed with seeing games wrapped in plastic being more valuable than mint-condition unsealed games you can actually use if you want to, so I can see that being a good reason to push for prices for sealed games to be the same as mint-condition unsealed games.

Indeed, Roo. Understanding what goes on in their heads is about as far as you can go, though. The fact neither they nor anyone else can make contact with the contents of a sealed box is pretty much the attraction itself.

I'm sure some move on eventually. Well, I hope. That kind of fruitless self-denial has to wear on all but the most obsessed.

MASOCHISTS! They derive pleasure by denying themselves the joy of playing the games

Still waiting for Omega Boost, hopefully it arrives this week.

Thanks Chi, that's perfect.

Enjoy Resi4, awesome stuff!

@BareknuckleRoo

You basically nailed it. Sealedgameheaven.com is all about profit of course, that's its primary purpose.
I did like your museum analogy also.

It still has the shelf hanger on the back, and clearly it has never been hung.

I estimate this would garner a 90+ rating from VGA and I could sell it on eBay for MILLIONZ OF MONIES

All of these pics except Phil of the Future were from my fap folder (which now includes Phil). Sealed games rock. Skykid Just Doesn't Understand the Esoteric Nature of Our Niche Hobby.

I'm going to assume that post was sarcasm and that you're not in-fact a sealed game collector.

If you are, you have my deepest sympathy.

You know, I've been staring at this sealed Omega Boost all day, and ...

GAH I can't fight it any more! It's just too perfect to open!

Instead what I'm going to do is, keep it, buy an expensive locking glass-front bookshelf to display it, and just download a torrent of the game and play it with an emulator.

J/K I'll do a video at some point, probably on the weekend.

Agree. What impresses me more is the knowledge of all the money it took to get to that point.

Not as sad as all the games I buy, telling myself I'll play them eventually (and usually not even that...but I will try, dangit)...

But most "sealed game collectors" are very much in it for profits. Quite often you find that they have it backwards, especially if they are buying shit nobody cares about (I'm guessing Phil of the Future is one of those games) and also if they try to sell the lot (i.e. at a loss, I've seen a few "complete collections" going for fractions of the money and time invested because they realized it was a ball and chain too late).

How about taking the game out, crapping into the box, and then resealing it?
Oh yeah, I should just mention - this whole thread is pretty much a rehash of Digital Press, circa half a decade ago. Nothin' new under the sun. I said we should use Twinkies back then (but I'm fairly sure somebody suggested the eternal craps-in-a-box too). In fact...

The sealed game grading people supposedly use a CAT scan or something to prevent fraudsters and broken pieces wiggling about inside. I'm fine with "out of sight, out of mind," myself.

Do the type of batteries used in cartridge games (button cells) with battery saving ever leak? I was just thinking I ought to replace my NES/SNES/Gameboy batteries before they die and start losing their saves, but then I realized, what happens if those kind of batteries DO leak eventually? Can you imagine what it'd be like buying a factory sealed game where the board inside's been ruined and no longer works because it hasn't been opened in ages and had the battery replaced before it leaked acid?

I wonder. The only saving carts in my library with a battery as opposed to onboard memory are F-Zero X and 1080. Both still work and I don't care about FZX's since it has a full unlock cheat + I can just record my best laps manually. But maybe it's prudent to replace them for that reason.

Sealed, stone-dead games... lmao, what a testament to utter uselessness that would be.
