-5V Required for Taito G-Net?

Post by shmuppyLove »

This came up briefly at the last jonny5 meet, and everyone thought I was crazy, but I found the info:

http://wiki.arcadeotaku.com/w/List_of_J ... e_-5_volts
Sega Astro City 400-5198-01 PSU's suffer from having an under-powered -5v regulator rated at only 500ma fitted by design. This is not powerful enough for a lot of games that require -5v, most notably Bubble Bobble and Taito G-Net motherboards. A kit is available for this PSU that upgrades the weakness available here:[2]. Other models of Astro City cabinets/PSU's may be affected but have not been verified as yet.
Which is weird because then in the list below in the article, they don't mention Bubble Bobble or the G-Net.

I know the G-Net is Sony ZN2-based, which normally does not require -5V, but I thought maybe because of the PCMCIA format used for G-Net? But then as I understood it, the -5V for the old JAMMA boards is for audio amps ... I'm having trouble finding an operator's manual online that would answer the question definitively.

I'm running G-NET games on my Astro City's without any problems, and without -5V :)

No sound on my Rainbow Islands board though :|
