Shmups Forum Appreciation

Post by finisherr »

I'd just like to say that this forum is great. I started playing shooters around the time that I joined, about a year ago. In that time, I've played a couple of shooters, sucked at them, and over some time, started to suck a little less at them. I've even 1-CCed a handful of titles after initially thinking it was impossible. This forum has been very helpful along the way, as well as entertaining and informative. Hell, I just set up my first trade for a game I really want to play and the poster is throwing in an extra title at no additional cost (xris, trade with this guy). Anyway, I'm generally impressed with this forum and wanted to put that out there.

I joined this place when I realized I could use my G-Mail account to register. What a good day that was.

This is a really great place, even with all the retarded bickering. People rip on Elixir all the time for his "dolls" even though he has helped supply a lot of useful information. Rancor plugs his products every now and then, but I've failed to find anywhere else with prices and customer support like his.

The guys on the hardware forum seem to know their stuff pretty well. The RGB and arcade stick data is good, the stickied supergun thread is awesome, and they're generally good at technical problem-solving.

The strategy forum is good just for that boner-inducing Battle Garegga guide. Seriously, I love learning about the intense intricacies of what makes a game tick.

Trading Station is awesome in general. I've never had such smooth transactions with people online. Digital Press turned to ass and Neo-Geo never had anything I wanted, but this place has been awesome.

The off-topic forum is pretty colorful, if only for the drunk thread. Reading Drauch's posts is like looking into the mind of a modern Socrates. An insane, drunken Socrates.

Really, you get what you put into this community. The more you interact, the more you benefit. In the last few days I've had PM's coming in from every direction about trades, technical info, and donkey punching.

Seriously, Shumps Farm, you're fucking great!
Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

This forum is great despite all the hilarious bickering, but the only thing I find boner inducing is DrPlankytrousers

This is the only board on the entire internet where posting scans of music CD back covers and linear notes induces censorship. There is no music board that would ever do this, and it's not only accepted but encouraged on discogs.com, the best and most comprehensive archival music site online.

But yeah other than that and the occasional elitist attitudes it's a pretty good board.

I like shmupsforum because I can shitpost to my heart's content in SC/OT and engage in serious philosophical debate in HS/ST, while educating my dumb ass in HW and making mad bank in TS.

That, and some guys here really know their stuff re: import gaming. I've learned a lot about all sorts of good stuff, way beyond just shooters.

It's an OK forum, you really need to rotate your monitor to view it correctly though.

You learn things every day in Shmups chat and Strategy.

You compete with people in Scoring.

You talk about nonsense in Off-Topic.

Guys! Let's not forget the awesome stuff rolling out of Development at the moment.

No one seems to care but there's some fucking amazing WIPs around including:
- Papilio with its awesome graphics!
- Thunder Force IV Rebirth!
- Xeno Fighters R, an excellent Raiden Fighters fangame featuring cameos across various subgenres!
- Everything in Rozyrg's projects thread!
- Lunacy Star Second is also shaping up really well for those who like Touhou games (even I'm thoroughly enjoying it). :D
- FINAL BOSS!
- Aero Chimera, best Raizing-style game to come out of the place in my time here yet!
- Hyperspace Invaders Zero, neat retro take on vintage games like Space Invaders for those who like Geometry Wars style graphics!
- Aero Flux!
- Time Extended, a great caravan-style shmup which I enjoy even though I don't enjoy caravan-style shmups!

There's great stuff coming of there which I feel is very underappreciated! As for the rest of the forum, bickering bitching and boner jokes aside it's a place like no other. :)

I was just telling one of my friends about it today. It's already one of the best places for finding old arcade games, learning how to play them, and now there's even a thread for acquiring victory cigars when you 1'cc them.

If you can laugh at or learn to ignore the persnickety posters it's a pretty wonderful forum. It's kept me coming back for 7 years.

The list of in-house development was a nice touch....Xeno Fighters R lookin' GOOD & I discovered XYX on YouTube a while back...blew my fuckin' mind.

This is a great thread....

I'm thankful for this forum because without it I may have never gotten hold of my cabinets, or my precious collection of PCBs.

If it were not for this forum, I would never have met drboom, m3tallica, drunkninja, gunbird18, zespy, caldwert, drauch, jonny5, or a host of other kickass dudes.

Also, I would never have figured out how to make Ibara my bitch without the ST thread and m3tallica's constant coaching :)

Without this forum...I'd not know to LOL when someone says "go play Mars Matrix"...I'd still be playing tee-ball lookin' at dust dragons....

Yeah sure we bitch at one another...and the loli thing *is* old, and it's always getting too close for comfort....

But I've been on other forums...this is where it's at....

Shmups forum rocks!

It's the only internet site where people post in english, so I don't have a lot of choice.

Funny though isn't it? Compare this site to SRK for example. Both Shmups and Fighters are equally technical in terms of depth of play, yet the difference in intelligence between the posts made here and on FG sites is like night and day.

I have to show my appreciation for this place as well. Lurked for years, and could not have stuck with the genre if not for the community here that has stayed strong consistently. There was no other way I could have kept up to date with games that were years in the making, new developers who wouldn't have stood a chance otherwise, shmups on entirely new platforms... All in one place.

Yep, what a waste of the first two capsules. It always takes at least two for me to feel comfortable. In most Gradius games any more than that will be too fast and I'll end up plowing into the environments. I think V is the only exception to this rule, where I can handle at least 3 without Racer X's special mouth spray.

2-3 speed powers ups works pretty well in Gradius III. This is the game that attracted me to shooters in the first place, but I won't attempt a 1CC for a very long time. It's something that I want to do, but not right now. Kinda like how I put off reading Infinite Jest for a very long time.

That's not why people rip on him, it's a byproduct.

It's actually pernickety, americans just decided they like putting an "s" in it for no reason, it's similar to how people write orientate instead of orient.

One of these days someone from the forum will live down the street from me and post that he (or she) is selling a candy cab and I'll have the crash right then and there and pick that fucker up.

Here's to hoping...
