What is it?
Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch is a free project created by CutmanMike and a team of contributors consisting of hardcore fans of Capcom’s classic Mega Man series. Powered by the Skulltag engine, this retro styled first person shooter is designed around the look and feel of the 8-bit Mega Man games. It includes every robot master as a playable skin, over 50 weapons and maps based off the original games, 32 player online play, a singleplayer botmatch campaign and much much more. If you’re a fan of online first person shooters or Mega Man, you simply have no excuse to not download and give Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch a try today!
Gameplay
The game can be played in pretty much any game mode in Skulltag, but will be designed for Deathmatch. To keep the gameplay balanced and simple, you will have to find weapons scattered around the map and pick them up like in standard Doom fashion. Along with the huge amount of weapons, there are special inventory items which can be used at any time, such as the Rush Coil and E-Tank. The aim of the game is to destroy the enemy players and earn the most kills, known more commonly as “frags”.

Supported gameplay modes on launch will include:

Deathmatch
Team Deathmatch
Last Man Standing
(Randomly selected weapons)
Team Last Man Standing
Possession
Team Possession
Capture The Flag
One Flag CTF
Terminator
Duel
Instagib
(All robots fire instant killing Metal Blades)

The game also has a single player campaign that is split into chapters, based on each Mega Man game. Each chapter takes you through all the standard maps with a predefined bot set up and boss battles. Between chapters you return to Dr. Light’s lab, where you can practice with weapons etc.

The game is currently at version 2c and regularly updated. I've tried it out and it's damn fun. Don't know how this slipped under my radar until now!

Oh wow I remember this, I hadn't heard anything about it for years so I just kind of figured the project was all dried up.

Come to think of it, I read about some MM FPS game in the past, but it didn't look exactly like those screens.

I am blown away that something this awesome exists. I know it's just built using Doom but it must have taken a lot of work to give us such a complete package. Simply amazing.

Check out this Heat Man map.

I spent the night playing through the single player campaign, which is you vs. bots. I managed to fight my way through Mega Man 1 and it was seriously challenging but highly playable. I never experienced any crashes and the game runs very smooth for the most part. It started chugging a little on Ice Man's stage, but only in the wide open above ground areas. The last two stages were Wily Castle fair, and were designed to be played as a free-for-all skirmish. I was stuck for awhile until I realized strategy just isn't called for when there's that much chaos going on and opted to go crazy. This game has bosses, I was faced with the Rock Monster at the end of the chapter which required just a little pattern memorization like in the original. All in all good fun, so far.

It literally took me all night to get through the first game's maps. I'm still left with the remaining 5 NES entries and an extra chapter built around MM7, only 8bitified. That's alot of game for no dough. If Capcom had half a brain they'd put these guys to work polishing this thing up for a downloadable console release.

I haven't installed any of them yet because I wanted to complete the main game first but there's a great deal of fan made add-ons out there. There's some MMX and Zero map packs and probably stuff based around alot of the other titles. I even saw one that gets the forgotten DOS entries in on the action. Just like with any PC FPS, a good chunk of the online matches require you to have the proper .wad and .pk3 files installed. I did get to play a few online matches though, and for once the bots gave me more of a run for my money than the actual players.

Hope that Capcom doesn't pull the same crap Sega did with the SOR remake.

Kudos to these developers. I don't play FPS, but I tip my hat to them.

It's seriously cool. I've just made it to Megaman 3's Wily Castle stages. Not ashamed to admit the bots are really kicking my ass

Needleman & Magnetman's stages are insanely tough. They really make it to where you can't just run around blasting and expect to win. I'm finding it's best to immediately locate any Treble or Tango icons that might be in the map. Treble acts as a high powered sentry gun so you can find strategic places to drop him, pretty good design for amateur developers.

Doomseeker really is useful if you want to find online matches. I haven't used it in years and forgot that you can set it to automatically download any required .WADs for you. There aren't enough people playing this game but I suspect it's due to a lack of advertising more than the outdated engine. I live and breathe video games but had never heard of it until last week.
