Shmups SPRING/SUMMER thread: Do Stuff Outside

Post by mesh control »

The weather is finally nice and I am trying to keep myself busy so I went on a 14 mile hike today. Found a couple of section quarters, which was neat.
My mountain bike is currently in the shop having all of the gears repaired :x , but once it's ready I'm going to tackle a 12 mi. trail that goes to the top of the mountain NW of town. The summit is 2000+ feet above town. 8)
Spelunking lava tubes in two weeks in Modoc county....so I'll probably end up in Seattle or Portland.

I'm also thinking about hiking Matterhorn sometime in June or August, but we'll see.

Anyone else staying active or planning any trips?

PS take psilocybin in the spring. It's the best season to do psychedelics.

Great idea for a thread!
Don't know how many shmuppers are into the awesome stuff though...

I myself will be seeing quite a lot of the great outdoors this spring/summer. Though perhaps not under as relaxing conditions as you might think...
Will probably plan in some kind of two-week Lapland hike if i get the time.
Drinking fresh water directly from a stream north of the arctic circle is a... refreshing experience to say the least. :)

- Speaking of bicycles, I have a neon green Strida LT on order, which should be coming mid-May 8)

I'm rarin' to get a Tartaruga, but I need to find out how I can import one of these babies:

- On an unrelated note, I was expecting some huge sell-off in the stock market this month, but nuthin' going. I bought some crappy mutual funds this morning anyway 8)

Weather has been amazing the last few weeks where I live. 20+ degrees outside, which is crazy for early March. I actually managed to squeeze in a few rounds of golf before the weather went back to normal today... with snow v_v

Golf is my main summer activity. Always walk though, no cart, helps me lose some weight in the summer.

Flagstaff, Arizona: 3 feet of snow

For sure, I am ridin' through the hallways of the office on the Strida once it arrives. I just need the kind of headgear that'd do a double-take 8)

I don't have anything to do tomorrow and don't want to go to Reno.......

So I'm going to drive to work and steal a mine truck, then hike from the mine to Antler Peak.

This has bad written all over it, but fuck it. I'll take a mine radio and hammer just in case. I've heard stories of mountain lions in the mountains, but i'm not too worried about it. If I die, well I had a good run. Maybe they'll make a movie about it.

You work in a mine? So, manly! :D

I can't remember the last really physical outdoor activity I've engaged in :( I walk to the corner store pretty much every day, but that's like .25mi, round trip.

It is always nice in Florida.

Does running on the treadmill on the back porch count?

kinda manly, but mostly lazy work.

I just scoured for some topo and plotted a rough map. I'm concerned how many old workings I may find. I know where they are at in Galena canyon, but some of the mapping is pretty rough and I'm going to stick to the ridges anyways. Allegedly, there is an old headframe that's still up somewhere east of my destination. Sometime in the middle of the century 20+ miners were lost in the mine and their bodies were never recovered.

I hate miners (e.g. foremen, anyone who operates equipment or works in the mill and the bureaucrats. Engineers, metallurgists, and geologists are cool.), but learning about all of the old stuff that happened and seeing what people were working with 80 years ago is amazing.

Maybe I'll bring my camera.

The sun is death.

Anyway, for some reason I relish being indoors even more in summer than in winter. Then again, my main reason for going outside is tobacco consumption, which I find much more enjoyable in cold weather. I also prefer going outside and getting cold and then coming in to get warm, than getting hot outside and coming in to air conditioning.. Part of this must be northern european genetics...

Depends if fuckpillows are involved. And if those fuckpillows are being fucked. It's a legal and moral minefield.

Since I just moved to Louisiana I was planning on exploring the swamps this summer. I've been on an airboat tour before and I think I'll do that again just to get myself prepped. It can be pretty dangerous.

Sort of OT because I won't be able to do it anytime soon but one of my lifelong dreams is to explore the Tsingy De Bemaraha in Madagascar. It's basically a forest made of knives.

Cycled ~30 miles by accident
Went outside for a smoke instead of just opening the window
Sat on a bench outside to drink coffee

The weather here is turning shitty again but looks like I totally made the most of my week off in the sun.

The Dry Season is starting to roll in but at the moment there's only a mild difference between the Wet Season weather we've had for the last 4+ months and now. I give it another two weeks and the temperatures will drop by a good 5 degrees I reckon. Will be a great time for me to start a walking exercise regime of some sort.

Spent the afternoon strolling around the peak district with some friends last wednesday. We walked 9km aparantly. We're going camping next week and we're gonna climb scafell pike. Hopefully the weather will be good.

I'll play a lot of frisbee golf, a few rounds of real gold at the public course. Plenty of cooking out. Swimming! But, I stick to pools, our lake is kinda gross. My city goes into large festival overload in the spring and summer, with one or two a month, a couple even last a week, and bring thousands of people a day. Drinking on bar patios, and our porches. And even a little bit of kite flying, while kited of course.
So, yeah lots to do coming up soon.
All of our cherry trees are blossoming right now also, one of my favorite signs of spring!

I used to do a LOT of hiking and cycling. The only reason I've slowed down is because:
1. The weather here has been miserable for the past year or two
2. I've already covered as much ground as I can on my own two feet

At my prime, I'm easily able to go more than 160km without rest or even water. (The one time I did bring water with me was the one time I ended up in hospital, funnily enough...)

Yeah, I would not go into lakes, rivers, beaches, or any other bodies of water that are not tested on a regular basis either by the local health authorities or by someone else. You'll be a sitting duck for a waterborne illness otherwise
