Kind of a wasted opportunity for DLC if you ask me. Just a ship? A new stage would have been nice.

A new stage would require reworking the high-score boards to account for a 10 stage versus 12 stage run (and really, the game already takes about 50 minutes for a full clear, that's long enough).

Any new stage would be better implemented and confined to new order mode, probably in a run which didn't loop as well.

Five stages really is enough though. I think a loop of ten is too long especially if the first five become trivial after practice. It's probably better to just make the game harder rather than start padding it out with extra stages in an attempt to add difficulty (which is obviously not the best way to achieve that)

I haven't actually played the DLC stages for Otomedius Excellent, but I assume they don't have any effect on leaderboards. The way they're being released makes me think that they can be played outside of the main campaign.

Maybe then an alternate/remix scoring mode would have been fun too, like what they did with Bullet Soul.

While I'm all for whatever keeps G.Rev profitable, the value-for-DLC equation here doesn't sound as good as I would have liked. 400MSP gets you a lot more content in Strania or Bullet Soul. While it's also exactly what each of the new characters in Mamoru-kun cost, that was a much more character and story-driven game. As long as they're going to continue this model of providing extra content, I wish shmup publishers would have stuck with the Raiden IV precedent of 80MSP/~1USD ⇒ new ship. Oh well, at least they're not going full Otomedius :P

A new ship as DLC? interesting.

Will this thing be available for both modes or only confined to New Order?

Still working on Arcade mode, and can get to stage 4 boss. Progress in UD for me has been a little slow comparatively, as the game plays out a lot differently to other shmups - you really need to strategize with the option to prioritize your kills or at certain points or you will get badly overwhelmed.

I've taken to using rocket for the bosses as speedkilling the bastards seems to save you a lot of tears.

I hope they fix the targeting with your guns as the option seems reluctant to stay locked on to certain turrets at certain distances.

Very pleased with the game overall, bar the initial problems with 4:3 CRT compatibility. I've been having so much fun with Arcade that I haven't even touched New Order yet

Is the general consensus that Arcade is more difficult than New Order, or vice versa?

I would assume that it'll be available in both... will be interesting to see how broken it is?

And in terms of difficulty, New Order Mode is more difficult than Arcade Mode.

G.Rev posted a video demonstrating the new DLC chopper.

So it uses the option pod power up as a main weapon enhancement (Vulcan adds a second forward main shot, while Cannon and Rocket fire a steady stream of each along with the main shot) plus it has a wide V shot type by default. It can be used in both game modes but it looks like you can't get 2x score bonuses with it.

Yay for bullshit DLC. Why not give it to us for free as a reward for buying this expensive port of a 6-year-old game?

Exactly.

I'd buy it if it was available in my region (ala futari black label) but I'm not going to spend £20 buying asian points for a ship that doesn't look that great.

Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

 Kinda off-topic, but was this video always unlisted? Grev just uploaded a fixed version after I commented on the typo they made at the end of that trailer. Grev does what Capcpom don't.

Started up UDHD before work this morning to see if the patch was available yet. Nope.

Hopefully it will be out by the time I get off work.

The new ship is up on Xbox live, but I see no evidence of a patch for the 4:3.

Is PS3 getting it first or something?

G.Rev indicated that the patch will be available to for the PS3 first.

I wouldn't expect a patch until next Tuesday at this point. I just read their statement again. They basically say the PS3 patch will be available when the PS3 DLC is available. They also indicated that the PS3 DLC wasn't approved yet. So I guess we don't really know when the PS3 patch will release. PSN updates are on Tuesdays (in North America, at least). Obviously they missed this week.

Ah OK thanks for the info.

To be honest the 4:3 is lower on the list of priorities for the 360 version, as I have the game looking fine on the 4:3 CRT.

The sound issues would be a nice fix, and I hear the targeting on certain turrets is a little wonky on the port, with the cannons stream of fire falling away from the intended target - OK I've never played the original DC game, but this does seem to occur a bit.

I hope they get the PS3 4:3 correct though. That is the top priority for any patch, obviously.

They'll probably break more things than they fix. Bethesda style.

DLC (and likely the patch, also) are still under review by Sony. This comes from a reply on G.Rev's facebook page.

Can someone tell me,on the PS3 version in Arcade mode on a widescreen tv (not tated) does the image fill the full vertical height of the tv? obviously with borders left and right.Or are there small borders top and bottom also creating a kind of box image?
Ive just seen the video of the new ship above on the 360 and the image fills the full height of the tv.

Just noticed also that the explosions look better on the DC compared to the ps3/360.There's more black debris flying out of each explosion on DC.Its only slight but noticable.

The patch is out for PS3. No more letterboxing and less slowdown. Not as smooth as the DC version, but close.

What about bullet speed, and enemies shooting offscreen? Any tinkering with that?

I spent most of the night playing arcade mode.

Bullet speed is still all over the place. I spent about an hour with the Dreamcast version on Sunday so it's fresh in my mind. Some bullets in HD are still faster than the original, some are still slower. Example: It's easier to dodge the bomb spread from the 3rd stage mid boss, but stage 1 seems overall more hectic. Before the patch, you could almost kill the Stage 2 boss before reaching the boss battle. Post patch it's closer to the original.

I never had much of an issue with off screen enemy fire before, because I stuck with mostly arcade mode. I did notice it in New Order mode pre patch, however. I will have to play through that mode more before I can comment.

Slowdown is still around, but it seems more genuine. Things slowdown after things go batshit on the screen, not before as if in anticipation.
