Mainly listening to the new Cannibal Corpse and Sigh's In Somniphobia at the mo. Torture is brilliant, for the most part - their best album since Bloodthirst, IMHOtep.

The entire Red House Painters discography. What a band. Their take on Silly Love Songs is something of a Vienna of the last century's nineghties. You don't do pop songs like that, but they did, and got away with it. I can't believe Ivo Watts-Russell had any beef with them guitar solos.

Cardiacs - Songs for Ships and Irons/Guns/Sing to God
I'll admit I pir8zd all these because you can't really find them. Especially in the US. But this band blows my mind. It's like getting into a band like Devo or the Pixies again, there's just a wealth of composition brilliance here and it's a little too much to take in!

HZT recommended me a huge stack of awesome music, but all I seem to listen to is Girl's Generation. I hate myself.

Just lost access to a record player due to moving house, but before that I was listening to a lot of Wagner and Debussy.

New Xiu Xiu album is pretty ace too.

The new Meshuggah record Koloss came out yesterday and I managed to get it Saturday thanks to Amazon.

I am speechless as to how good it is and it gets better the more I listen.

QOTSA Songs For The Deaf because it's amazing, and I've gotten my 2-year old rocking to it.

Bowie's Ziggy Stardust - 40 years old? Really?

Therapy? 'A Brief Crack Of Light' - Hmm, not sure yet. It's no Troublegum or High Anxiety, but I'll give it more time.

Van der Graaf Generator - Godbluff

I'm still undecided on Peter Hammill's voice (and VdGG in general, honestly) but fuck me if "Scorched Earth" isn't the most awesome rock song of all 1975.

Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire

Probably the best jazz-fusion album I've ever heard.

I'm sure I've got a DVD audio version of Uomini D'Onore in my loft somewhere. That is the best album though although my fave track would have to be Happy Porno Living.

Speaking of Cannibal Corpse... I love the group Cannabis Corpse. They're not just a joke cover band, they're actually a pretty solid death metal act.

Only recently heard the latest Opeth album, Heritage. I like it a lot more than I thought I would.

Was introduced to Bongripper's fantastic doom recording Satan Worshiping Doom.

Realized that early Carcass is grindcore, very different from the polished death metal on Heartwork that I knew and loved.

Various black metal groups: Dodsengel, Darkspace, Infernal War, TotalSelfHatred. Out of these I'm digging Infernal War's Redesekration the most. They're like the Slayer of black metal (though maybe that does them a disservice, they definitely have their own style).

Experimental / jazzy black metal: Ihsahn, Solefald. Love the track Eukalyptustreet off Solefald's album Norron Livskunst. On the other hand there are some great sax bits in Ihsahn's music.

Koloss is fantastic, I concur. There seems to be a pattern of picking a scale and going up an arbitrary number of steps in that math-metal way: 123 1234 12 12 123 1234 12345 and repeat... anyhow it reminds me of Lightning Bolt, who do that a lot on Hypermagic Mountain.

Finally, when I'm not in a metal mood I still listen to P-Funk, hip-hop, shoegaze and Sunn O)))... or I come to this thread and check out all your recommendations. There's so much to choose from! Life is good. :D

You know what I haven't been listening to as much lately is electronica. I used to listen to Squarepusher / Venetian Snares / Aphex Twin type stuff a lot. Anything new and exciting in that area that I've been missing out on?

Bongripper and Cannabis Corpse are both solid. Satan Worshipping Doom is probably the finest instrumental doom record I've heard.

I'm currently listening to lots of Bong (Beyond Ancient Space and Gilgamesh Lives, mostly), White Orange (Like a trashier sounding Queens of the Stone Age), Cop Problem (intense d-beat hardcore). I've also got an advance of Ufomammut's new one for review and the shit is amazing.
Feedback will set you free.

I have my tickets for April 20th in London and it's nice to see the Meshuggah love on the board. Most people I mention them to just look at me blank.

Seconded, A Little Man and a House is sublime and is also the only album of theirs that I own. I think I need to rectify that.

I finally got hold of the two Matching Mole albums in lovely remaster editions with bonus outtakes, Peel sessions and live stuff. Just listened to the first one and it surpassed my expectations. Robert Wyatt is easily one of my favourite artists and it saddens me to think that there are only a few bits and pieces of his (not including the million collaborations) that I don't have. I need Soft Machine 3rd and the EPs box and I will have a relatively comprehensive collection.

All the Cardiacs stuff is on iTunes I've discovered, but I don't really want to use iTunes. I hope somebody re-releases this stuff eventually in physical formats. Good to know there are some other fans on here.

A while back I had a bad habit of buying vinyl and never listening to it. I've started going through my collection and listening to everything that I never really gave a chance, and have had two pleasant surprises so far.

Opeth - Damnation
I bought Blackwater Park and Damnation for $3 each from a local Hot Topic when they liquidated their vinyl section. Put Blackwater on first, and since I've never been into death metal vocals I wrote it off immediately, and assumed Damnation was basically the same. Whoops! Damnation is fantastic.

I also love the title track of Blackwater Park now, but Opeth's heavier side has never really grown on me.

Shrinebuilder - Shrinebuilder
Grabbed this one when I placed an unrelated order at an online store that was promoting it at the time. I only listened to side one when abandoned it for some reason. In any case, love it now.

You'll be happy to hear that Opeth's latest album (Heritage) has no death metal vocals on it either, then! It's a fantastic throwback to classic prog.

I'm fine with harsh vocals anyhow, but if there was a band to convert a newcomer it would be Opeth. Mikael Akerfeldt has one of the best voices in the business. He's especially notable for being understandable without the lyric sheet in more cases than most. Then the fact that he switches to a clean style so often makes it clear that he's using a particular voice for a reason -- that the growls go better with the music or that a dialogue between two characters / ideas / desires is occurring, for example -- and not just as a crutch for someone who can't sing or just to make the band sound more "brutal". It sounds like you're open-minded enough to at least give death metal a chance and that's good enough for me. For what it's worth it seems that Mikael is a bit sick of death metal himself at this point, so even if you can't get into it hey, you're in good company. ;)

I'm going to spam this shit, because it bums the fuck out of me.
Our good friend Sarah Kirsch was diagnosed over summer with Fanconi Anemia - a rare genetic disorder that causes Leukemia & other cancers. Despite being put through the 'fn ringer by chemotherapy and long hospital stays, Sarah is staying strong and fighting hard, finally out of the hospital and at home with her amazing partner Jess and loving caregivers, Paul and Ilya.Aside from the unconditional emotional and physical support Sarah has received from her devoted extended family, donations to date have been enormously helpful in lightening the financial burden of this kind of illness. The demand for supplies not covered by insurance is, however, unending - from food to cleaning supplies to lotion to kleenex to parking at the hospital... There is no donation too small, every $ helps
https://www.wepay.com/donations/sarah

So basically, Mike Kirsch came out as transgender last year and I just found out about this. It makes me so sad to read this. Her music is one of the driving forces that got me into punk and hardcore during highschool. The John Henry West 7" was one of my first records and the Navio Forge LP is a masterpiece. No one probably cares about this, but music has moved me so much it's hard for me not express myself.

best wishes, Sarah.

The Torches to Rome EP is one of my favorite hardcore records ever. Fuel and Bread and Circuits weren't half bad either. Had no idea the dude came out as transgender and certainly didn't know about the recent illness. My moms boyfriend is currently dealing with the one-two punch of thyroid cancer and having no insurance and it is a complete nightmare.

Fuck cancer.

Amazing stuff, definitely one of their best albums although strictly soft vocals. Very clean sound on that album, the guitar solo in Windowpane is masterful.

If you only like Opeth stuff without harsh lyrics, half of Watershed (as well as the whole album of Heritage) might be up your alley. Stuff on Watershed like Hex Omega will probably sound more alike to Damnation than Heritage stuff, but it's all just as good.

Anyone else using Spotify on their Facebook? I'm finding it to be the first music service that's ever impressed me. Not experiencing any system load or hiccups, songs play instantly, and I've been able to find everything I've looked for over the last 8 hours. It also doesn't look like a puckered dog's asshole.

Picked up a bunch of new stuff from the band.

Strange Songs in The Dark
Children of Desire (new LP)
Blonde God (singer's intstrumental band that never released anything, but he added vocals and shit)
Demo CD
it's all good.
Really nice people. Carson; the singer, was in a band called Divisions that I was really into. He tried to give me the Blonde God CD, but I bought one before they played. :p
Actually, everyone in the band and their roadie are or were in bands that I was into at one point. Cult Ritual, Nazi Dust, Body Rot, Divisions etc. everything from Tampa is awesome.

other stuff:
Unwound - Repetition
Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crime (Haven't listened to this since I was 17 lol)
Brian Eno - Ambient 2
Bauhaus - In the Flat Field

I know I'm gettin' old, but just been enjoying the last fm bebop stream. Picked up some of the recent 2 for 1 impulse reissues (Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp), but it's all early 70's, and a really difficult time for jazz, though Coltrane's World Galaxy has been out of print a long time and is killer.

Anyone else excited about the lost Can material that's being released in June?

Best by far of the Impulse 2-for-1 reissues is the Archie Shepp (For Losers/Kwanza). Shepp has a unique style that sometimes doesn't work at all, and I'm always really hesitant when I check out one of his albums, but these two are pretty fantastic. Shepp is all over the map, including some awesome vocal pieces (some of which aren't jazz at all), while elsewhere he has no problem slipping into melodic jams that remind me a bit of some of the moments on Wyatt's Rock Bottom. Picking up these releases was a shot in the dark for me, but its nice at least one of them turned out to be phenomenal.
