New Resident Evil Announced: Operation Raccoon City

Post by drauch »

So...yeah. Straying from their roots yet again. It looks like another Resident Evil Outbreak, really--since those did oh so well. Switching it up worked well for Resident Evil 4, but after 5 It's already grown into a stale action-fest. The only survival-horror element that remains in the Resident Evil series is the inclusion of zombies. I'd sell my soul for an updated, "classic" Resident Evil game on modern consoles. And no, the new 3DS game that is in development doesn't count. Action games are taking over the gaming world. Bro-gaming is in full force.

I'll probably play it, though.

Team based :(

Resi 5 would've been so much better without the partner system (Sheva deciding that fighting an unlimited stream of lickers was better than getting in the sodding lift - great plan!). More AI to be tripping over and babysitting? Great. The worst bits of games are where you have to look after retarded teammates (go back as far as stuff like X-Wing/TIE Fighter, trying to protect a bunch of dumbass bomber pilots), but even worse is invincible yet useless teammates. I hope they get the balance right.

I'd rather see updated versions of 2, 3 and Code Veronica. Given the whole Gamecube remake of the original and release of Resi 0, that can't be too hard? I'm not sure there's much new life left in the series - 5 tied things up pretty well story-wise and there's another animation due which is set in the game universe. The two Wii Chronicles games did a good job of bringing in new scenarios but is there much more to get out of it?

I guess they're revisiting Raccoon City to introduce a way to get more story out of the game - either continual bouncing back and forth in the timeline to show new bits or - heaven forbid - reconning or rebooting.

I'm betting action games sell a lot better than survival horror games (though I really loved RE4.) Maybe that new Silent Hill will be good?

Yeah, exactly. Survival horror is almost turning into a niche genre itself nowadays. Action sells...

This! More AI to be tripping over and babysitting OR leading the way destroying any sense of discovery.

Team based - Jesus. Still I did read a quote (can't find the link) where it said it was a single player/team based shooter. Depends on how much of a game they want to make the single player version. Hope it's not just a series of arenas where you shoot each other over and over.

Capcom have lost the plot with Resident Evil - I'd love to see a remake of the first 3 games in the style of Resi 4.

Looks like I'm the only one RE geek in the world who wasn't impressed by Code Veronica and is looking forward to further alterations to RE gameplay formula(s). RE was never known for mindfuck-inducing plots that take thousands of pages to be explained (like Silent Hill), so as long as Capcom delivers solid action, I'm fine with that. Obviously not all the 5 new RE games planned for this year will be awesome (add Move support to RE4 and decrease Veronica's difficulty, will ya!), but I won't write an obituary for Raccoon City until I play it myself. The only missed opportunity I see here is the decision not to make Hunk the main character, which would be great. But instead they decided to force player to hunt down Leon Kennedy, which is kinda cool - reminds me of Half-Life: Opposing Force

Also, all the problems with stupid AI and so on are resolved simply by assembling a team of real people to sit around the TV or over the internet :P
In an alternate universal, Soldier Blade II has already been crafted by Hudson Soft and Compile with proper tate this time around (c) PC Engine Fan X!
Sega tried and failed. Nintendo didn't even try. (c) Specineff

This is just SOCOM with an RE skin (same developers).

Good to see it's getting beaten up in the press. That'll teach Capcom to not believe that the "Survival horror market is too small for Resident Evil." I expect DmC to meet a similar fate.

Yeah that statement from Capcom really pissed me off. It's the shift away from survival horror that has kept me away from the new RE and Silent Hill games. Only the beloved Fatal Frame series has stuck to its roots.

And one year later, that's EXACTLY what GameSpot is saying:
In the end, Operation Raccoon City is little more than a poor man’s SOCOM, and a destitute man’s Resident Evil.
The Chronicle Herald (Canada): "All stagger, no swagger"

I didn't pay attention to who was developing this one - though I did probably have a thought like "this is a rather Western kind of thing to do" cross my mind. I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, too. I'd rather have Sine Mora on disc! Blah to this.

Capcom seems to be dropping the ball on many fronts lately. DLC, DRM, milking some franchises to death while letting others rot...

Anyone here actually played the game, yet? What are these game-breaking glitches I've heard about from other players? It'd be great to hear about the game from non-big name sources (Gamespot, IGN, etc)...

No one with any taste wants to waste their money on it. That's why you'll only get hearsay imperssions around these parts.

I was done with new Capcom stuff forever after Rockman Dash 3 was canceled. Fucking unforgivable. It's the equivalent of if Nintendo had canceled Mother 3. Not like Capcom's released anything worthwhile since, of course.

I wouldn't even bother mentioning Capcom at all when talking about this game. The only thing they fucked up is licensing RE to Slant 6.

Slant 6 butchered Socom Confrontation's launch. The game required a initial 3-5 hour install, which was followed immediately by a 1.5-2 hour patch (I might be wrong on this). The menus were cluttered and the game was loaded with glitches and laggy servers.

/6 is a garbage developer, don't buy their games.

I hear you on MegaMan Legends 3; I been wanting a sequel for a while. The series is to me what Mario and Sonic are to others. It's to be expected, though, in the age of pre-orders; who pre-orders MegaMan games? Remember, only big-budget million-dollar-developed titles are worthy of pre-ordering?! Or at least that's what we're led to believe...

Anyway, I'd take the impressions/opinions of friends/actual players over Gamespot/IGN/etc any day; friends/actual players aren't being paid to review games. Fan sites like this is where it's at! if I went by what big media sites say, I would have never experienced shooting bliss in so many forms!
