I built a joystick today what did you do? - Modding Thread

Post by shmuppyLove »

I was bored, had some spare parts and found a perfect-sized cardboard box at work, so now I present:

CardBored Fighter Brawl Wrestle Stick Pro Weasels

Image
Here's what we're starting with

Image
Comparison with a Mad Catz TvC stick

Image
Pretty similar in terms of overall size

Image
Layout template (from slagcoin.com) and the parts (from Trevor Spencer!)

Image
Locating the template on the top -- I'm only going with 6-buttons so I've offset it to the right a bit

Image
Used a hobby knife to lightly cut through the template and mark the panel

Image

Image
Cut out where marked

Image
Pop those buttons in -- they snap in like snappy butter (?)

Image
Locate and mark holes for the joystick mounting screws using original mounting plate (the 4 closest to the center)

Image
Joystick screwed in

Image
All parts in, but nothing to wire it to yet

Image
Done! Well, not really, but haven't decided what system/PCB I'm using yet

CardBored Fighter Brawl Wrestle Stick Pro Weasels

hey shmuppylove, thats a pretty badass joystick, but I can't help but wonder.. wont the joystick wear away the cardboard after using it for a while?

Is it really stiff? or did you just build this for shits and giggles?

either way. thats gaming like a pimp.

I built a similar one for my supergun, and it's held up like a champ.

Next time, use Cave PCB box for the real win.

I used to have a cardboard panel on my cab and it held up well.

A Cave PCB shipping box oughta be done for shits & giggles as a DIY joystick project, shmuppyLove. Will you do one? I agree with Dave K. with his cool suggestion.

If someone's willing to donate a box, I can certainly do it.

I'd even go a step further and slap my supergun in it, but I haven't got any Cave PCBs. Yet.

I guess this is all pushing toward the ideal project of buying a new Cave PCB and building an all-in-one supergun around it without ever actually removing the PCB from the box. ;)

Only reading the title, I thought this was going to be an ongoing brag thread about what new thing people just modded or built. Maybe?

I built a supergun prototype. Still need to wire buttons, but I did it. Oh, and do the audio circuit. And put it in proper housing.

Fuck you, I got video out of it, that's good enough.
Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

See, told you. Supergun. Building the audio attenuation circuit tomorrow, using a retarded CPS2 stereo daisy chain to get audio on my headphones.

Sweet, one of these days I need to get my hands on a CPS2, so many solid games. And my two favourite fighters of all time, SFZ3 and Pocket Fighters <3 <3

I looked at building an attenuator, but I actually found a really nice one on eBay for around $5 I think so I didn't bother.

I did have to hack off a floppy drive power connector to connect it to my PCBs though.

Fuck I should have taken some pics, but I completely disassembled and thoroughly cleaned the PS2 slim I got today.

Didn't modify anything in it, though that tiny little fan seems extremely useless and kind of noisy, I want to either get a new one or replace it with something better.

Or possibly replace the whole heatsink with something larger? Can you cool these things passively?

Was able to install the Free McBoot softmod onto my memory card using my 'chipped phat PS2, and it works perfectly in the slim:

Image
Hang in there! You can see the gaping hole where the phat was before. I can probably get the slim and my Wii in that space now lol.

Image
Oh ho ho

Image
Hey we got ourselves a menu!

I think this softmod is pretty rad, how it hooks into the system menu like that. Now to see if I can get Open PS2 Loader working and running ISOs off a network share ...

Is there any particular seller that would be good for purchasing something like this (in the US for a lower price):

http://www.ebay.com/itm/300680812388

I'm interested in building a SNES pad hack stick! Lizard Lick is closed, so I'm trying to find another source... :? I'd like to keep the same layout as the TE stick and need to locate a layout template!

I've never had a heat issue with it, and honestly I have it in a non-ideal spot for ventilation. Really, the AC adaptor's block I've been more paranoid about getting warm, and even then I know I shouldn't worry as I've had the PS2 running for hours and hours during long gaming sessions without issue.

As long as you don't have it sitting on carpet or anything on top of the case itself which'll fuck with ventilation (since it looks like a lot of the heat gets dissipated through the case itself) it should be fine. If you're that worried you could plug in a small fan to blow on it directly since I imagine the PS2 Slim's small size makes it hard to mod it internally. Additionally, buy some plastic pads to put on the corners of the rubber 'feet' the PS2 stands on so the body sits a half-inch or so above whatever it's on, that'd help a bit too.

I find the noise to be the worst when playing dual layer discs (specifically Gradius V), it seems it spins maddeningly fast at times, the fan doesn't sound that noisy to me by comparison. Not sure what can be done about that though.

For reference, I've got an SCPH-75001 model (sticker's on the bottom).

layout templates are available at http://www.slagcoin.com

For parts in the US, I use www.focusattack.com, www.gremlinsolutions.co.uk (uk but it was a pretty comparable price the last time I used them). Also paradise arcade (http://www.paradisearcadeshop.com/en/)

Thanks for the pointers Zapf! Time to order! :D From the layouts on slagcoin, I'm not quite sure what would be best... This "shifted" vewlix seems to be closest to the TE, but would require snap in buttons and wouldn't work with screw on. :?

You could just grind down the nut if it gets in the way. I used (seimitsu) screw ins in my brothers' TE, and some did touch each other but it wasnt the end of the world

You can also put standoff spacers between the nuts and the panels so they don't come close to surrounding nuts without spacers. Finding fitting spacers can be a challenge though.
