Given that the Dreamcast's VGA box can be modded to output both 15khz and 31khz down the D-Sub 15 cable, would it be possible therefore to construct a cable that connects to the DC's VGA box and provides both a SCART style output and a VGA output? Could someone skilled in designing things [hint]Retroaccess[/hint] make one?
The only stumbling block I can see is that if the user switched 31khz through the SCART, could this damage a TV/Monitor?
Scart/Dsub15 VGA switchable cable for Dreamcast, possible?

Re: Scart/Dsub15 VGA switchable cable for Dreamcast, possible?
well you can't really damage your tv as the dreamcast has h-sync and v-sync for vga on seperate lines which you don't connect to your scart cable at all, only the c-sync which is unused in vga mode.
look at this pinout :
http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/console/sega/dc-vga.htm
instead of modding a vga box i would make this internal mod but i would also connect the c-sync pin to the vga connector - let's say to pin11 which is unused in the vga.
now you can just make a breakout box in which you route the v-sync and h-sync to the appropriate lines to a vga connector and the c-sync to the scart. rgb lines to both.
edit: what kind of tv do you want to connect this to actually ? because you might also just connect an extron emotia behind the vga and connect it directly to your tv.
edit 2: i guess you have a vga box with also composite out ? in that case i guess that "modding" it for rgb means just cutting the ground for the vga select and make a switch on the box. should be a piece of cake.

It's not really for me, it's for people with TV's that have both VGA (31khz only 15 pin DSub) and RGB SCART (15khz only) inputs. Internal mods are nice but lots of people would just prefer a more simple solution I think.

Re: Scart/Dsub15 VGA switchable cable for Dreamcast, possible?
yes - but the cheapest vga box is like 25 bucks on ebay and the internal mod cost me maybe 2.
well if you get one of these
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sega-Dreamcast- ... 743wt_1163
i doubt you would be able to fit a scart connector in one of these, but you could add another vga out on top of this case and just make a custom vga-scart cable. piece of cake and might look good when done right.
edit: well there is now way to make it unintrusive with just an "add-on" and no modification of the box itself. if this was what you're striving for.

I'm horribly busy with cable orders. I'll look into this if I can squeeze it in, don't hold me to it though as I can be insanely slow getting new things sorted out.BuckoA51 wrote:Given that the Dreamcast's VGA box can be modded to output both 15khz and 31khz down the D-Sub 15 cable, would it be possible therefore to construct a cable that connects to the DC's VGA box and provides both a SCART style output and a VGA output? You have an XRGB3, so there's no need for you personally.

Oh you're right what was I thinking! Besides I have a custom switchable DC Box with said connections that's practically in route.BuckoA51 wrote:You have an XRGB3, so there's no need for you personally.
