Viper Phase 1:New Version cart region change

Post by opt2not »

Hey shmuppers,
I recently got a VP1:NV cart that is in Japan region, but the Seibu SPI motherboard I have is European region. I know this by loading up the cart it came with, Battle Balls, and found out by the German Licensing on the title screen. Since region compatibility on these motherboards suck, I'm looking at an alternative of switching the region on my VP1 cart so that I can gleefully play it!

Does anyone know which ROM(S) I need to swap to do this?

I've taken photos of both cart's PCBs if that helps.

Battle Balls - Europe:

Viper Phase 1 - Japan:

***mods, I hope this doesn't violates any forum rules. I figured a region change isn't necessarily illegal, especially in the case of these Seibu boards, which seems a lot of people have region problems.

I appreciate the help!
Thanks!

The easiest solution would be to just modify the region byte in the ROM 1 (PRG 0).

This means that you have to have access to an EPROM reader... do you have one ?

Unfortunately I don't have access to one.

Would you or anyone else here be able to burn me one?
I've already contacted Steph at hobbyroms, but I haven't got a response.

To ensure success, I would read out the region byte from your Battle Balls.

However if you are 100% sure that it is Tuning I can modify the region byte and send it to you so you can send it to hobbyroms etc...

Yeah I'm 100% sure it is Tuning. The title screen looks exactly like this with the German Licensee Tuning written at the bottom there:

If you can send me the file needed to burn to a rom, I can look for someone who can burn it if Steph doesn't get back to me.

I'll PM you my email.
