Looking for films to check out.
Looking for films to check out.
So after several years of self debate on if I should buy a PS3 as a blu-ray player or if I should just buy a blu-ray player, I recently decided on the later. That being said, I've been on a movie kick lately. I'm not really a movie kind of person but I figured if any one could suggest me some good films it would be the shmups forum.
I'm looking to make a few "blind" purchases based of recommendations. I've bought a few of my favorite films already if they help gauge what kind of stuff I like. Those being Matyrs, I Spit on Your Grave (remake), and Tortured. I just ordered Grotesque and Haute Tension off amazon without really seeing either. I also plan to pick up The Audtion & Ichi The Killer (when the price is right). I like euro horror and jap horror films. I dig really gory violent stuff but I also like it to have a little bit of meaning because other films such as The August Underground trilogy are just flat out boring.
I also really dig the whole space marine slaughtering aliens theme. I ordered Pandorum in hopes of it fulfilling that itch.
Any one have any sugestions?

Hausu/House is a completely bananas and excellent horror/comedy/melodrama/miscellaneous movie that you should see.

Pandorum will disappoint you, it's pretty B.
I suggest the tried and true Alien followed by Suspiria, and maybe Mulholland Drive. They aren't blood n' guts but they deliver a genuine scare... or more like a creepiness that isn't expected and can't be copied by a gore film.
Also, I enjoyed Haute Tension overall but won't go in depth until after you've watched it. There's alot of stuff to like about that movie.

Re: Looking for films to check out.
If you want an Art-House Horror film, I suggest downloading or renting Andrzej Zulawski's Possession, starring Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill (of The Omen fame). It's one of the more beautifully-shot films I have seen; it's on the level of some of David Lynch and David Cronenberg's strange imagery - and a bizarre story to match.

I don't think you can buy the video since it's been outta print for years. I have an old Anchor Bay videocassette and DVD to tide me over until it gets a better, more proper release
If you want something a little more accessible, then definitely go with Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, the special edition with the second disc of extras, and top it off with Brian De Palma's Obsession, which features a music score by Bernard Herrmann and photography by Vilmos Zsigmond (no split-screen sequence on this one, but it has a great rotating camera shot/sequence). Both are a bit slow and there isn't a lot of action going on, but I think they look and sound fantastic (in spite of the fact the Obsession DVD looks like a crap transfer from a videocassette source). I do very much love Brian De Palma's early 70s to mid-80s films with the glossy look and orchestra music scores (a few were done by Pino Donaggio). 1984's Body Double was his last good film; that one even had "Relax!" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood featured in its own scene!

Inside/À l'intérieur was decent. It's about a pregnant woman who is attacked by a crazed lady who tries to take her baby.

First off i'd like to suggest the guinea pig films especially flower of flesh and blood. Secondly, if exploitation films are your thing, and it seems like they are, then Salo and A Serbian film could be for you. From my own personal taste in films i'd like to recommend The Shawshank redemption, Leon and Dances with wolves although from what you've told us would be the opposite of what you're after. Great films regardless

Re: Looking for films to check out.
The Guinea Pig series are not according-to-Hoyle "films." Those were recorded using video cameras. Nonetheless, they are great exploitation material in the Snuff tradition with some very horrific imagery - the best coming from "The Flower Of Flesh And Blood." Since this is a series, some are a little better than others, but the viewer will be able to tell the production values for the effects were quite high for Indie Horror movies.Leader Bee wrote:First off i'd like to suggest the guinea pig films especially flower of flesh and blood. Salo had a Criterion Collection re-release, so if you're looking for a Blu-Ray that will look great because the transfer is clean, then this is probably the best video that's been recommended in this thread so far. However, the Criterion Collection version is incomplete (missing a sequence) while the Region B Blu-Ray offers the complete film (I will eventually have to spring for two or three Blu-Ray players in order to be able to watch movies from other regions). Always check your sources! In this case, it is dvdbeaver:
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/dvdcompare/salo.htm (*** NSFW *** video covers and scene comparisons feature nudity ***

Personally, I much prefer to watch other Pasolini films, such as Mamma Roma or even Accatone (his debut); these were done near the end of the Italian Neo-Realist era.

L'interier and Frontier(s) aren't on Region A blu-ray yet, otherwise I would have picked them up.Acid King wrote:Inside/À l'intérieur was decent. It's about a pregnant woman who is attacked by a crazed lady who tries to take her baby.
Can't stand Salo or A Siberian film. I do like Flower of Flesh & Blood ...it's not on blu-ray and I'm not holding onto hope that it ever will be.Leader Bee wrote:First off i'd like to suggest the guinea pig films especially flower of flesh and blood. I've seen both Shawshank Redemption & Dances with Wolves but I don't think I would want to own them. Never heard of Leon, what's it about?
...and to whoever said house, I have it in my amazon wishlist. Not completely sold on it because it is a Criterion release. They are really hit and miss with me and most of the time it's a miss even when it looks really good (Anti-Christ anyone?)
Re: Looking for films to check out.
The Criterion Collection is the Cave of video distributors. I think they have one or two of their own forums, where it's like the ShMUPS forum, except for videos
If you're looking for Region A Blu-Rays of Horror Exploitation films, then you should see what the Blue Underground catalogue has to offer. Blue Underground is one of my favourite video distributors in North America:
http://www.blue-underground.com/
Most of the old Anchor Bay video distribution rights went to Blue Underground.
Cult Epics is a small video distributor, but they have a few curios worth owning, if not seeing at last once (Radley Metzger AND Tinto Brass?! Tell me more
):
http://cultepics.com/new_releases.html
Anchor Bay used to be the be-all, end-all of Horror, whether Cult, Grindhouse, Exploitation, Sleaze, etc., but they've changed their business model to cover a lot more commercial videos:

Man, I wish NoShame was still around. I'd re-buy their Giallo catalogue in Blu-Ray. Anyway, you shouldn't be doing blind buys for what's obvious. You have a Blu-Ray player and you want movies whose picture quality will show that. I wouldn't be lookin' anywhere near cheap0 Horror and Exploitation stuff. You should first get the cream-of-the-crop stuff. I don't think there's much difference between the DVD release of Tremors, The Blob, and The House, and their Blu-Ray counterparts - clearer picture of the same B-movies

Okay, I've read up on all the films suggested in this thread. I question if people are capable of reading the opening post. I'm looking for gorey violent gruesome horror films, not psychological thrillers or scary movies. :/
Re: Looking for films to check out.
I'm aware of how contradictory this sounds, but I really don't care about how the picture quality looks. I've noticed on older films you can almost see a grain not present on standard definition. You're probably saying then why buy a blu-ray player? The answer is really just I dunno, I just wanted one. Re: Looking for films to check out.
Hahah. I did re-read your opening comment, which is why I went back and added that the gory, violent, and gruesome Horror films you may be looking for don't matter so much in what format you view them... old film grain will look like old film grain, and crappy camera angles and editing will look like crappy camera angles and editing. With that being said, have you seen:Casper<3 wrote:Okay, I've read up on all the films suggested in this thread. I question if people are capable of reading the opening post. Re: Looking for films to check out.
^^^how is Henry? I've heard some good things about it.
Re: Looking for films to check out.
It's a low-budget production, but it isn't shot with a crappy hand-held camera either. The actors aren't professionals, the wardrobes and sets look like stuff they had available, which makes it look slow and boring; it also gives it a bit of a "gritty" and "disturbing" feel. It's not exactly a documentary, yet the characters are more believable than the serial killers depicted in Hollywood films. The premise and method for the murders are also a bit unnerving. I think if you liked watching the original I Spit On Your Grave, you might want to give it a try. On an even lower scale is Abel Ferrara's Driller Killer (DVD only) and Paul Bartel's Private Parts (DVD only) - one is a No Wave Slasher Grindhouse flick and the other is a kind of Psychological Suspense Midnight Schlock. Both are classicsCasper<3 wrote:^^^how is Henry? I've heard some good things about it.

If you're after something foul with pretentious of grandeur, I reccomend Masami Akita's (AKA noise musician Merzbow) gorgeous suicide porn flick Lost Paradise.

Check out the 2009 The Collector for some gore thrills. With the way how it ends leaves room for a possible sequel down the road.

Yea, I'm kinda still where I began.
I watched Frontier(s) again last night. I wish it was on blu-ray.
Inside, Martyrs, Frontier(s). These are the kind of films I'm looking for. I heard of a new one called Ils/Them that I've queued up to download and hope it fits in.

Re: Looking for films to check out.
'Run! Bitch Run!' sounds right up your alley Casper. Pretty good, if you like over the top gore and exploitation/grindhouse, rape/revenge films. Fairly recent too.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1136684/
Another I might recommend is 'Murder-Set-Pieces'. Really good, very gory, and actually really well produced. Also fairly recent.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0422779/
Although just a short film, if you want twisted gore(and I mean TWISTED!) you should definitely check out 'Cutting Moments'. Be advised though, out of all the fucked up movies I have seen(and I enjoy this stuff), this one was one of the few that made me wince. It is not fucked up in the 'oooh slasher went slash, blood go sploosh', it's something else entirely.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0159391/
I love this kind of stuff, so I will probably post some more recommendations as I think of them.
Oh, and +1 for Driller Killer; anything Ferrara did is gold, made all the better by the haunting Joe Delia scores!

My Grotesque Review
I made a blind purchase on Grotesque because reading up on the film, it was compared it to Flower of Flesh & Blood, a film I like a lot. While I will say upfront the film really is nothing like Flower of Flesh & Blood, it may just stand on it's own as an excellent horror movie.

Grotesque takes a very unique approach to the horror genre, even for Japanese horror, and even more so for the "extreme gore" type of horror. I don't want to give away the story but it plays out in a manner much different than any other horror film. If you've seen Flower of Flesh & Blood or any film similar to it, you know the gore in these types of movies is usually slow, bloody, and very drawn out. In Grotesque each individual act of violence is quick and to the point, while still bloody and graphic, you won't be forced to sit through boredom as some deranged lunatic spends 20 minutes hacking off one limb. In addition to the new approach to violence the film is given more than the standard scenario but a full story.
The basic premises being that a young couple is captured by a "sick" doctor who brings them to an unknown location with the intention of torturing them for the sole purpose of excitement. He makes a promise that if they can bring him the excitement he yearns for that they both will live.
Story 8/10
For this type of movie, the story is downright excellent, it's believable and you can't see what's coming next. You'll want to guess and try to figure things out, you won't know when the film is over or if there is something else going to happen. It draws you in and makes you hope the couple survive. The only reason I give this section an 8 instead of 10 is because let's be real, if this was any other type of movie the story would be considered pathetic.
Presentation 8/10
The camera work is nice, the gore is well captured and doesn't appear fake. There is a bit at the end that shows just how much of a budget this film has, but for the most part the presentation is spot on. There is a semi-homosexual part of the film that thankfully is only suggested and you are not forced to endure. Thank you to the director for going about it the way they did instead of being overally graphic with it like you might find in other films.
Violence 8/10
Dismemberment, Torture, Graphic, It's got it all. Some stuff that will make you cringe, (a guy get's his testicles nailed through, and eye cut from the inside out) ...but nothing that will give you nightmares. Films like Saw use self mutilation in unbelievable ways like cutting off your own arm or out your own eyes, Grotesque takes a different more plausible approach to self mutilation.
Overall 8/10
It's a good gore flick that is rather easy to sit through. I personally didn't like the ending as in the events that happened during the last few moments of the film, but liked the actual way the film concluded. I know that makes very little sense but if you watch the film, you'll know what I'm talking about. I recommend it. (though I would be lying if I said you were missing out if yo didn't see it)
