It takes passion to do such a thing! I'm just a drone.

Drinking a palo salon maron!

Wow. This is really good! I spent $80 at the beer store and brought home tons of beer (and some really , really good sake)

Finally indulged in a Sun Ra album without interruption; Nothing is..., it filled all the desolate areas between here and Reno.
Traded in a bunch of crappy hardcore records for some mediocre CDs and a Cocteau twins record.
Couldn't find anything good, not even a single Thin Lizzy record. :roll:
Other than that, It's been a great fucking day!

Drinking some sierra nevada Bigfoot on this end. Being some sort of dumb-in-the-head Sun Ra fan, bought the Eternal Myth Revealed box (14 disc sonic biography)--part 1!!!! Admittedly, its totally put together with love (it's one ex-arkestra member's live achievement/destiny). I doubt I'll listen to it more than once.

As far as brewing; it's good to have a hobby.

Gonna keg my oatmeal brown cinnamon raisin ale tonight (yeah, should taste like a cookie.)

That sounds fucking delicious.

It's good to be (actively) listening to music again. Finally tracked down a couple of records I was after for awhile. I just can't over do it. I did once, before and it turned me off. I bought more records than I could listen to. :?

Yeah, I spent 20 years of my life non-stop collecting music. I've mostly quit now except for Sun Ra--and that's just a weird infatuation. Definitely not had a problem going for months without collecting music.

My biggest problem right now (with regards to music) is my taste are going through all sorts of changes.

Throughout highschool I listened to nothing but 80's hardcore like Negative Approach and Void, then moved onto 90's emo after graduation which is a dark blackhole of a genre.

Now it's all over the place. I'm listening to Drum and Bass, shoegaze and new wanky synthesizer music. :|

Not really sure what to listen to anymore, so I rotate between 5-10 albums nonstop and never venture far from them. Usually stick to other bands somehow associated with either the band or label.

This Palo Santo Marron is fucking strong.

Yeah, it is a totally great beer. The oatmeal, ginger, raisin, cinnamon brown ale is weird as hell (to be expected.) Well, I have 5 gallons of it. Gonna be sharing with anyone who will open their mouth :)

I should make cookies or bread from all my spent grain. The problem is, I'm assuming there isn't actually much value left in the spent grain.

The mashing only removes the starch and sugar, not the fiber so there is a benefit to adding them to bread. I know a restaurant across from the Portsmouth Brewery has used their spent grain for making rolls with pretty great results.

Just made a 4L yeast starter (french saison) for the golden strong I'm making. Reused my washed yeast from the saison I made and added another pack. A monster starter for a monster beer (~10-11 abv!)

Drank a Samuel Smith Oatmeal stout with dinner. Was expecting something a bit richer, but still good.

When I was in Reno this week, I ate at this vegetarian restaurant and there was a couple eating and a older man with a teenager came in as the couple left.
I was pretending I was reading the newspaper (I didn't bring my book, meh.), eavesdropping. They were talking about some experiments and acquiring funding for something, so I thought it was quite interesting. I live with a bunch of hick who talk about shitty movies, fucking and drinking; of course I was interested! I left before they finished eating and went along my way. I opened up TED talks today and see the teenager on the first video listed! If I knew who he was at the time I would have asked some ignorant question.

Life is strange.

Anyways, I'm going to quit my $60k job to go to community college. It's probably a dumb move, but I need to get out of this town and go to school. I have just shy of 20k saved up atm, but am prone to blowing through it. I don't know how much is enough to get through school and survive. :? Everyone I've asked has never given me solid advice and more or less told me that I'm young, go do whatever you want.

If I don't leave I don't think I can survive one more winter. I've fucked my body up pretty bad this winter and none of the scars have healed like I hoped they would

Yo Mesh:

1) Samuel Smith makes small beers in keeping with most British beers. Almost all their beers are session ales. Drink them for balance, precision and drinkability. This is why I like Fuller's London Porter to the Tadcaster. It's just a bit richer, but still a small beer. But don't think I'm talking shit about tadcaster, or Sam Smith. This is one of the legendary breweries and there is a lot of greatness in what they do.

2) RE: Quitting a 60K/yr job. Look, I don't know how bad shit is where you are at, but seriously, no. Not in this economy. I don't know you for shit other than some guy that posts on shmups who also likes beer and sun ra, but I'm also sheltering through this economy with a job I'm not 100% in love with living in a place I don't really like that much, but giving it up now isn't just a bad idea. It is bat shit crazy. Well, again, I don't know how bad your situation is, but you need to ask if it is worse than minimum wage flipping burgers.

Is fucking up your body related to your job? (that might change everything I've said above)

Good god don't quit your job. I would kill for a decent job in this crap market. I've fucked up and made bad choices in my past and lost/closed some opportunities with good jobs and I regret it all the time. I make the same now in my crap job when I was young twat and I hate it every day. It may suck, but it only gets worse if you quit.

This. I'd drown a whole orphanarium of children for $60k a year. Keep your job and save your money. $20k is like two years of school at a state school and if you're just looking for a change of venue, just pick up and move to a new area and look for work similar to what you're doing now. You're better off doing that than burning your savings for a degree.
Feedback will set you free.

I'm even afraid to move (being a school teacher) since most districts are so tight that unless you have like 10 years of seniority or something, you can expect to be laid off. As much as my particular job is nothing good, and the place I live is also rather blah, it could easily get a lot worse, and there really isn't much I could do about it.

I say make the most out of where you're at.

Honestly even if you saved up your life savings I wouldn't recommend moving to Seattle (if that is still on your mind). Houses are fucking expensive and jobs are relatively hard to come by even at the big places like Microsoft and Amazon.

Hi xxx (I don't know your real name, apologies), I would say that you're insane, but this is important:
Cmoon wrote: Is fucking up your body related to your job?
Because you say:
If I don't leave I don't think I can survive one more winter. I've fucked my body up pretty bad this winter and none of the scars have healed like I hoped they would
I suspect that you're getting paid a lot because you're expendable. I met a few mine workers in Australia. They told me that they did earn a lot when they started, with little qualifications, just because in the long distance they were supposed to wither and die.

You may be in the same predicament. It's very likely that they pay you that much because, say, by 25 you may be already broken, and not useful to them anymore. They will throw you away like a ragdoll.

This is something you know best, because you (hopefully) know what your scars are, if they can heal, how big are the chances that they will become worse if something bad happens, at work.

So, I'd suggest to:

0. Find the will and discipline to do the things listed below;
1. Evaluate carefully whether you can do another 1, 2 years more at your job;
2. Save all you can;
3. Then go to uni with your savings;
4. Get an engineering degree or something that will get you hired ASAP once you're done;
5. Learn German and move here in Europe. By what I read, you're born in the wrong continent;

No mucking around, no frat parties, no "love", nothing that is not directed as getting your goal of getting a USEFUL degree and jumpstart your life.

If you're living on savings, everything you do must have the purpose of getting you hired ASAP.

And yeah, you should also stop getting drunk. It seems that it really obfuscates your judgement.

On my second--no third now--IPA (21st amendment, overrated imo) right now... this is the point at which shmuppin gets dicey. Random TNG episode from Netflix: check... TNG pinball on... check... Candy Cabs all running... check...

meshcontrol, I have relatives in Reno, and its a cultureless shithole, more than most of the US. Randorama's advice is best I think. Whatever you do, don't be afraid to change your life in a radical way. There's no guarantee the risk of a new path will pay off, BUT its a guaranteed slow dive into hell if you just swallow your discontent and accept stagnation.

Got completely trashed on a brewery bus tour yesterday. Brewing a golden strong today. My new system mostly seems to be working, though there's still a few things that need to be tweaked. Was about to blow $160 on a march pump but realized I could still do everything I wanted just using gravity.

Making goddamn nine gallons of this golden strong with plans on taking half of it to the socal homebrew festival in may.

Oh yeah, been listening to the lost reels collection of Sun Ra. Amazing how much ground you can cover when you're just loitering around home the whole day brewing beer.

60K a year isn't enough to support a family of mountain goats around here; guys need to earn at least twice that to get the girl hahah. But, seriously, having both parents alive (and together!), being gainfully employed (paid tens of thousands more than average in an area that isn't expensive to reside), not being diagnosed with some terminal disease or being horribly maimed, having a most-excellent collection of shoot-'em-ups and other miscellany, and dude still complaints about it: He gotta have his head examined. For real! :P
