We played the hell out of this during my last meet and it seemed to surprise those who hadn't played it before with its gameplay. It really is a stellar title.
Yep! That was me. Have no idea on the value, but it was worth it.
Going to show it off at my next gamenight - I have a feeling it's going to be on all night.
At our recent Chicagoland Winter Carnival, caldwert broke out his Omega Fighter board...
...leaving anybody who understands shooting game history's mind blown.
Such a deep game and WAY ahead of it's time.
I kept saying, it's like Cave saw this game and said "OK - lets isolate each element of gameplay from Omega Fighter and make a whole slew of games that exploit each mechanism." Proximity. Check. Fat lazer? Check. Fever pitch gameplay. Check. Chaining? Check.
Some focker just sniped me on Ebay for a damn PCB.

Sorry man - that focker was me.
If you're ever in NJ, you're more than welcome to stop by and play.

That's great. I'll be in Jersey next weekend for a smoosh-fest with J-Woww and Sammi Sweetheart.
As long as that board is DTF, I'm good to go, bro.
Might wanna duffle-bag that shit. This is one dirty board.

Interesting idea for a scoring system, but annoying to actually play, I found. It will be to some people's liking though, I'm trying to make it grow on me.
I suppose that it's just like some of the more recent games in that you can have a tradeoff between safety and payoff, but the way it does that seems kinda...well, it seems like you're forced to choose between scoring and survival to a high extent. Not higher than other games, but higher than I would like.
so after dropping out of the running on that last one that sold, i saw one just now and jumped on it. i have been playing it a lot thanks to dr. b for leaving it at my place.... first one is free... damn him!
so... a couple questions for you learned folks:
1. what are the differences in omega fighter "special" and the regular version?
2. if i like the play, feel and look of omega fighter what is next up?
so far that is like the pinbot of shmups for me... great look, great sounds, fun to play, not too nuts, amazing, i can see my self liking this for a long time...
Special is basically a score fest - all about getting the slowdown bombs and the red bomb for special targets (worms at the beginning of stage 2) whereas Normal is more about the clear. Scoring helps to the extent that you get more lives: making it easier, but isn't about needing to 10x everything. Especially in later levels.
The last Omega Fighter boards went for nearly $150 (which is after the surge in Shmups Forum interest; before there was one sold at $75 or so), and I think Alcon is probably $100 more valuable.

Hmmm - I was basing my assumption off of the fact that Alcon sold for the asking price of $85 in Jan 2012, on these boards.
I haven't seen OM anywhere but eBay - and that went for about $150.
Thought Omega was worth more because of that, and I rarely see it.
There's an Alcon I know about for like a hundo - hit me up and I can put you in touch. I was gonna get it, but I am investing in a few expensive pcbs soon...
If you can get an Alcon cheap, then do it! If there's a big price discrepancy between what they're asking for the Alcon and the Omega Fighter, I'll buy your board so you have some money left over!
The game design of "Omega fighter" is not Mr. F.
From a certain major manufacturer though the name cannot be revealed because the person in question doesn't touch yet either.
It transfered the register, and the work of a super-famous game designer."
I'm pretty sure the "Mr. F" mentioned here is Tsutomu Fujisawa, a key figure behind much of UPL's later output.
The "super-famous game designer" behind Omega Fighter was Fukio Mitsuji a.k.a. MTJ, who's best known as the creator of Bubble Bobble.

Sadly, both men are now deceased.
Interesting, could you please tell us where you have this information from ?

I was told by someone in the know and assumed it was grapevine stuff but it turns out an old colleague of MTJ's spilled the beans a couple years back, and it seems like quite a few people knew or had heard about his involvement before then, too.
It's well known that MTJ did a lot of uncredited work in his post-Taito days.

Thank you very much for solving this mystery, the next time I play Omega Fighter I will keep this in mind

I was at a retrogame get together this past weekend and watched someone play it. Looked really fun but I didn't get a chance to play it myself.
Coincidentally, so was I ;P
Pretty strange coincidence that this old thread was resurrected the very same day I tried this game for the first time.
Really interesting about the MTJ rumors. If he was involved, that could explain why this game somehow managed to be so instantly appealing to me. I really want this board now!
