I beat my all time record on 1000m (MD2) PCB.

I think my score was 1,060,xxx with a time of 07:31 with perfect air. I basically fluked a speed run but it felt so good.

This PCB lives in my cabinet (1 of 3). Its never been out of it since day 1 owning the cabinet.

I get annoyed with the "lost air" bug. Really pisses me off they just disappear off the top of the screen.

The 2000m mode is something I haven't really tried a great deal. I think its OTT for the most part. I would rather play 2000m with the blocks as in 1000m mode :)

Richie.

Is the "lost air" really a bug? Because I think that happens with any block that has gone over the top by more than some amount.. at least I seem to recall it happening with X blocks in those bi-coloured levels.

Its not consistent and therefore must be a bug. The RAM must be overwritten periodically causing blocks off the screen by a small margin to be erased. The only consolation is that if you have to pull the air down your losing valuable time anyway. If they make another driller they should keep the 100m intervals in RAM until you clear that stage.

I payed MD (Dreamcast) a bit more last night, and cleared 1000m with a new high score (537,885). My next goal is a no-miss, all air run, but that may take a while. I still find myself getting into trouble in the last 3 stages. :?

Also played a "perfect" (no miss, all air) game of 500m, which was a first for me. If I recall my score was something like 361,xxx.

I'm kinda bummed that mikehaggar's site was so short lived.

I don't know, maybe I will try getting to the bottom of the first 100m without collecting any air capsules, deliberately get squished on the left and right sides of the screen, and see how many capsules come down?

Where can I find high scores for Mr. Driller 2?

Just picked up Mr. Driller DS on account of this thread (and because messing around with ZiNC makes me <insert gruesome hyperbolic statement>). Game is frigging bananas. I love bananas. I don't think I've been into a puzzle game since I was 5 and first played tetris. Unless you count Doom II on Ultra Violent, which I do.

I hope you got the Japanese version (or paid peanuts for a non-JP version), because the US version is totally nerfed. The voices suck FWIW, but the main thing is it does not have Dristone mode. An entire game mode missing!

Drill Land is still the best, IMO. It's definitely different though, and limited in a way that you cannot select different characters for anything other than World Tour mode.

Hmm.. my copy is in English and has the Dristone mode. Must be the EU version?

By "nerf" I assume you mean lacking that mode.. or was the core difficulty toned down?

I guess you got the EU version.

Maybe 'nerf' wasn't the right word if it that word has associations with difficulty/balance changes. Perhaps 'gimped' or simply 'butchered' would have been a better choice?

Anyway, glad you like the game. It took me about 2 months before I could play without getting squished every few metres, but I am an addict now.

My only other experience with the series is with Mr. Driller (ARC/DC) and Mr. Driller - Drill Spirits (DS). With that info in mind, here are my thoughts.

Generally speaking - Mr. Driller W does a decent job of tailoring an arcade style game to a modern home console audience. There are several unlockables and a friendly learning curve. There are a handful of "countries" which can each be played on easy medium or hard. As a semi-experienced "driller" I've found "easy" to be far too easy. I've also been able to breeze through the four early countries on medium, but the difficulty now seems to be ramping up a bit (I only have about 2 hours into the game so far). I'm not a particularly big fan of the way the "hard" puzzles are laid out. The number of blocks increases drastically, which feels kinda gimicky. I'd rather have the same number of blocks with harder puzzles to solve, or simply have the goal be at a greater depth.

Mr. Driller W received rather poor reviews from the mainstream press. I think the poor reviews were largely unfounded, however the critics did get one thing right. A modern play-for-score game should have an online leader board. Mr. Driller W does not. Hell - Mr. Driller W doesn't even allow you to compare scores locally! Each player has their own game-save which tracks scores and achievements, but there is no way to compare these scores. This bums me out, as my girlfriend and I love battling for high scores in Mr. Driller.

TL;DR: Worth $8. Especially if you are already a fan of the series.

1619 metres on 2000 mode on MD2. I don't hardly touch 2000m mode so I am very happy to be within the last quarter of completing it.

Sometimes my MD2 PCB gives me the 300,000 bonus on 1000m mode even if I lose a life past 800-900 metres! I think its a bug.

I recently beat the 2000m in MD2 on PCB. I got a score of approx 1.3million and a time of approx 14 minutes.

the last 250 metres is a nightmare. Your almost in freefall the whole time as the blocks collapse around you.

Has anyone tried the iOS one? It looks like a port of the original. I wonder how well it plays on a touch screen.
