SNES RGB not working on PVM monitor? Bad cable perhaps?

Post by drunkninja24 »

I recently picked up a Sony PVM-2530 monitor and secured a cable converter to allow me to hook up all of my systems via SCART to the monitor. All cables I own are Euro SCART, and all of my other systems I use via RGB work fine on the monitor (Saturn, Genesis, and PS2), but my SNES gets a real faint discolored and often scrolling picture, and also a really loud buzzing noise. It seems to me like it's just an issue with the cable, but I wanted to check and see if anyone else here had experience with SNES on a PVM before I go invest in another RGB cable.

Is it a NTSC-U SNES?

IIRC, Nintendo fiddled with the cable inputs for each of the 3 regions. So every regions pinout is different internally.

If that didn't make sense, Euro scart cables won't work with a US system and neither will JP cables. :/

edit: more stuff

Hmm, I use an EU scart cable on my US SNES and it works perfectly with my PVM-2530. Never heard this before.

I have had some bad cables with this system in particular OP, eventually I found one that works.

Okay, I kinda figured as much, kinda off odd that the same cable works perfectly fine with my SCART-Component converter. Ah well, I think I'm going to try picking this one up based on my previous experience with this guy and the good things I've heard about this cable in particular:

Open the SCART end and make sure that the RGB lines (SCART pins 15,11,7) all have 330 uF caps on them, and that all other lines are straight-thru. I'm assuming that your issue is that the colors and brightness are washed out. I just went through the same issue w/ my PVM.

Regarding the rolling, your sync is probably set to the wrong pin. Pin 3 on the SNES side is CSYNC. I forget what the PVM adapter has for SYNC.

Regarding the buzzing, if your SCART cable doesn't have RCA's for the audio, then you'll get some buzz with the audio. That's the nature of the SNES and SCART. The cable you linked to should get rid of this.

It is probably the stupid same problem people have with XRGB Mini, ie. some revs of SNES have crappy composite output that needs running through a buffer or sync seperator.

I had this exact problem with a SNES with this issue on a GBS-8220. It didn't work without buffer on the Mini, or the GBS-8220. This is something I hadn't even encountered before.

If the cable is wired correctly, blame your SNES. Its output needs to be buffered.

edit: but the buzzing issue does sound like a bad cable. Try that cable off eBay sure (it's my listing.) f it does not work, come back to me for advice.

I am about to sell a PVM cable on eBay too, and I need to find out if they need a sync seperator to work with problematic consoles. A raw cable works fine on 99% of stuff but there's these problematic SNESes out there causing me headaches.

Got the new cable I ordered today, and everything is working perfectly now  Nothing looked miswired on the cable I had before, so I dunno, but this one works, so that's all I care.
