The "rock bands" topic reminded me...

Post by Icecap Veiwin »

I plan to start a rock band when I get older and my friends and I all buy instruments. The band will be called (google search: SHIT THAT NAME'S BEEN DONE. NOW I WILL CRY ;_; )

We're probably going to just do a bunch of covers of game songs. I wonder if we could get all the permissions and make a CD...eh, just thinking to myself.

Uh, give me some songs to cover? I already had a bunch of Guilty Gear songs and the Turbo Tunnel music (from Battletoads for those who don't know, which is probably none of you).
The radio said, "No, John. You are the demons."
And then, John was a zombie.

Count on obscurity to protect you, I think that's what the Advantage, Minibosses, etc. do.

Please cover some Genesis and TG-16 songs and then post them on the net or if you must do NES, something far more obscure than Castlevania and Metroid.

The ending theme for Bonks Adventure as well as the "tribal" sounding song from the dungeon level of Super Castlevania IV. Please. :D

I've been learning to play guitar for a couple years now. Me and my best friend (who is an excellent guitarist) are planning on starting a melodic death metal band when i move home next year. Melodic Death is very much like video game music - especially Children of Bodom.

That's me on the right - this was taken just after Keith's wedding. He's drunk! :)

Since we don't have a name what should we call our band?

I was thinking something awesome like "The Vic Vipers" or maybe "Lord British".

The Vic Vipers is an awesome name.

Anyhoo, you absolutely MUST cover the Ghosts N' Goblins theme. It's a classic.

By the way, what is your role in the band? I've been playing guitar and singing since 1996. Although I'm not playing game music ( I play folk ), I plan on getting together a band named "Fresh Breeze Movement". If you know that is, you're a cool guy in my book. Wow, I'll say it again. "Vic Vipers" in an an awesome name. Stick with that one.

Yes, everyone should check out the shooter duel. The TF and Raiden tracks are keepers.

Maybe this could be like those reality shows but with Twitch and Nate as the judges

If I was anygood at photoshop I'd super impose Twitch's head on Simon Carrol(sp)
I'm sorry but my brother's GF has hogged the tv and I had to watch it same with the rest of the reality shows, while I either have food etc

Alright, I've decided; We're either naming ourselves Vic Vipers, Lord British, or Maverick Virus.

I was also thinking Pinky Roader.

edit: And, Res0Glas, I plan to get a guitar, either electric or acoustic. I think I can get one of my drummer friends from band to play drums, and one of my friends said he would sign up for keyboard.

If I get an electric guitar, it'll be more metal-based, if I get an acoustic, it'll be more melodic.

I've neglected to grab songs from the past few competitions, but I've got everything since the beginning. I think I posted something about the shooter duel when it was going on.

I've wanted to start a band for years, but none of my friends would take up an instrument. Not even a real band, just a few people to play cover songs and mess around with. Recently a friend expressed interest in taking up sax again (we both played in high school) so I'm lending him my tenor and am going to try to relearn it as well. If things go as planned we should have a decent jazz duo in a couple months with guitar/sax, or maybe bass/sax if I pick up a bass sometime soon. I hope to do a few game covers if they lend themselves to a guitar/sax arrangement.

hm, so you ARE thinking of starting a band. I can't play anything for crap so i'm not in. sorry man >.>;

Even so, "Mid-Boss" would be an awesome name -- but i don't know if people would confuse you with the Minibosses.

Hmmm... Interesting. I think I'm starting to piece it together.

You don't play, you don't have instruments, you don't write songs, you don't know what songs you want to cover, you don't have a name, you don't have band members, you don't know what kind of sound you want to have, and from this you intend to start a rock band.

Now that is ambition.

Actually, I have a lot of music understanding -- I play cornet, but that's more suited for orchestra.

That's a good foundation anyway. I used to play trombone and then tuba. I also sang bass in choir. So naturally, I play bass guitar now. "Play" might be overdoing it. I make racket with it. Which, within the cotext of my own fledgling band, is perfect.

Alright, a couple things I've decided:

We're calling ourselves Lord British. Once I can get (or afford for that matter) custom tees, I'm going to make black shirts with the Lord British side view from Salamander. On the back of the shirts (in the Gradius font) will say "Lord British". I still don't know whether we're electric or acoustic.

I think the first thing we're going to try to release a single (First Bonus at 20000 Points) which will hopefully consist of any three of the following:

-Ghouls n' Ghosts Level 1 theme (I had actually had this planned before Res0Glas' post)
-Still in the Dark (Guilty Gear X2)
-Turbo Tunnel (Battletoads)
-Vega's theme from Street Fighter 2 (Claws of Vanity)
-Gerudo Valley theme (Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time)
-Try to Star (Gradius 3) (bolded because this will be on it no matter what)
-I was also thinking of covering San Sebastian (from Sonata Arctica).

If you're insterested in what other people have already done with some of those songs Super Dracula has a Battletoads Turbo Tunnel cover, SSH has a cover of Try to Star here and Grospixels have a Ghouls'n'Ghosts cover.

I could also upload some stuff I don't have links for if you're interested. Generic/The Advantage done a clean guitar cover of Ghouls'n'Ghosts/Ghosts'n'Goblins, as well as The Minibosses. Kareshi has also done a solo piano arrangement. TempSoundSolutions has covered Battletoads, but I only have a live mp3 of it. I also have a short acoustic cover of Gerudo Valley by Ahren and Vega's Theme by Nino.

If you don't go acoustic I'd recommend covering some DoDonPachi or Strikers 1945 II and Strikers 1999. I made an attempt at tabbing some awhile back here. Most of the Strikers music is pretty straightforward to learn by ear and it's already arranged for the instruments you'll likely have.

Thanks for the recommendations, and yes, I've already heard SSH's Try to Star.
