The BEST home version of Ghouls 'N Ghosts ~ DaiMakaiMura

Post by parallaxscrolling »

Was for the Sharp X68000, a Japan-only home computer like the Amiga, but much stronger, and very much like arcade hardware.

The X68000 version the only version that's truly arcade perfect. Not even the Capcom Generations / Capcom Classic Collection versions are as perfect, because of small problems

Sorry this is so large but I thought it would be nice for you guys to see the back of the X68K GnG box:

(Huge pic changed to a link -Ghegs)

mini-review
Review - "3 years later, the land was seized with nightmare again. Arthur took up arms for the fight for justice. That was 3 years before when Arthur the Knight brought peace into the land. The struggle against the Prince of Evil seemed to come to a dead end and people hoped to live in peace and quiet for good. Yes, they had hoped the peace to be ever lasting until it happened..."

The x68000 version of Ghouls'n Ghosts is supposed to be so good as to literally eclipse the Mega Drive and the SuperGrafx versions.

Everything apparently looks and feels arcade perfect from the color palette to the graphical definition of the sprites and the backgrounds. The only annoying thing about this version is that it runs on disks although it should be possible to install the game on Hard Drive. What really sets this version aside from the others is the deluxe packaging that is by itself, worth of the purchase!

On a side note, it is interesting to notice that the red text to the upper left side of the box (which I quote at the beginning of the review) refers to Arthur bringing peace to the land 3 years before. Indeed, it was 1985 when Ghosts'n'Goblins came out, and Ghouls'n Ghosts showed up in the arcades in 1988.

Well to be honest, I don't know many people who played Ghosts'n Goblins and who were actually able to finish it because of the near to impossible difficulty of the last stages. So I guess it's no wonder Evil returned shortly after :)

Bottom line: an astonishing port of the original arcade pcb which only fault by today's standards is to run on disks. 9/10

Comparison of the 16-Bit versions:

Notice the X68000 version is the only one here that has the detail & color of the arcade. The Capcom Generation / Capcom Classics Collection versions have all the detail & color too, but they have their little problems like different resolution and dim parallax backgrounds.

Note: This discussion does NOT include Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts because that was the 3rd game in the series.

I was reading this exact thread, word for word, picture for picture at Sega 16 forums, and no X68K isn't arcade perfect, it has some differences.

Not surprising, considering that the X68000 was Capcom's CPS1 development platform.

But yeah, it isn't 100% perfect.

I like the PS1 version best because I don't own an X68000.

As has been pointed out by multiple people, it isn't.

Such as? The Saturn Capcom Generations don't have the proper screen resolution, but I'm not aware of any problems with the PS1 version.
Which would make the PS1 version the best home version.

The bad part is the backgrounds layers are too damned dark. :(

Indeed - a sacrifice I'm willing to make though, if it means not adding an obscure Japanese PC to my console closet. :p

Saturn version looks brighter, but the game throws a hello NOW LOADING screen at you between levels, and if I remember correctly, between lives. Can't remember as I've not played either version of Cap Gen 2 I own (both Japanese versions just to throw it out there, plus Ghosts, or Makaimura, replaces the shield with the cross o' doom) in quite some time.

I actually mean that I know I've seen those screens before, and this discussion being started out of nowhere. Pretty sure it was here too.

Probably someone trying to sell his copy of X68K G'nG, who's spreading nice words about it around as many forums as he can find.

Nah, it's just enthusiasm, I'm pretty sure.

Besides, I already have a copy, so there's what, half the market?

I always found it odd when comparison pictures are shown with different properties. Here for example, only the SuperGrafx picture has scanlines and only the first 2 pictures have filtered graphics. Kudos to the consistent 4:3 aspect ratio though. And it's always nice to have someone who cares about finding the best platform for a game.

It's an ass rape of a game whatever the platform though. It makes Ghosts n Goblins look fair. Best think about Ghouls was the fucking awesome original Tim Follin music on the C64 version.

I really wish someone would have told me about the x68000 in 1990.

I suggest you fire up MAME and play it again, because Ghouls N' Ghosts isn't particularly difficult, while Ghosts n' Goblins is just plain mean. I've 1CCed Ghouls multiple times, but there's no way I'd attempt it with Ghosts.

I really want to know what the differences are between the Capcom CPS1 arcade and Sharp X68000 versions.

I never actually thought of that. Alright, other than being interlaced, what, if any, are the other differences or problems with the X68K port?

In the words of one AirraidX, Arthur's feet do not hide behind the grass in the first stage. Ending music also does not cut off at the correct moment on the X68K version (it should cut off right as the words, THE END? fade in). This last part is my own observation, also minor loading between levels.

Couple with what GaijinPunch put and there's your some.

I guess that is some. Still, I would argue that the X68K is still the best HOME version of the game, can we all agree on that at least?

Epic fail. Were these ports done by summer interns?
