I agree with this. Fuck that. Even though NoE seems to have done a major face turn lately, which would benefit me (if I owned or planned to buy a 3DS), it still sucks.
Same. Region locking is archaic, should have ben fazed out by now.

I prefer my Vita to the 3DS, by alot.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Now this here is the problem. There`s no guarantee these killer apps will ever come. The PSP had only one game that could legitimately be called a killer app - Monster Hunter. And now that the series has gone over to the 3DS(which was a total and complete hype killer for the Vita in Japan), there`s seemingly very little Sony can do to make up for such a huge loss and remedy the situation. Sony makes better and more consumer friendly hardware, but Iwata`s Nintendo is simply a more competent company which also happens to have much deeper pockets.

When I get it, I too will prefer it to my 3DS. It`s a better piece of hardware by a landslide.

I agree, I think Sony is very much dependent on third parties to come up with a magic trick for the platform. Even MH was a fluke - who knew it would bring the PSP such good fortune? Their strategy has always been about relying on achieving a large userbase and using that to draw in developers and new IP's, but it's been increasingly risky over the last decade. They need to throw more money around, a bit like MS did with Bungie and Squaresoft.

I don't doubt it, I think it's the platform with games more to your taste (from what I understand of your taste.)

Personally I'm in no rush to get either, although I do find the reception the new Mario games received quite an attractive selling point.

There's been reports from a supposedly reliable source that the Vita is getting a Monster Hunter around the end of the year. Still, Sony no longer has exclusive domain over that franchise in the handheld market. The damage is done.

And yes, MH's dominance on PSP in Japan was a complete accident. The first two games were only moderate successes on PS2, and the decision to make a portable version was made rather lightly....I think it was just something the developers wanted to try. Monster Hunter 1's American release infamously had all the blood edited out, so you couldn't tell where monster weak points were.

Capcom USA/Europe's complete abandonment of the franchise after Tri is pretty sad.

I don't think Capcom has abandoned Monster Hunter in the west - they've been trying to release MHP 3rd's HD version on the PS3, but there are some complications that are holding them back (it doesn't have trophy support, which is a requirement for all PS3 games, so Sony would have to grant an exception, and it uses Sony's ad-hoc party program for multiplayer, which is only available on the Japanese PSN). They never released the PSP version of 3rd because by the time they would've been done with the translation, the western PSP market would be non-existent (as it is now).

They might release the 3DS version here, but its lack of online play will kill its chances of success.

Not buying this story. Square-Enix announced a US release of FF Type-0, and the Vita is backwards compatible. The problem was that Portable 3rd didn't have online play (without Ad-Hoc Party), which they've stated they believe is a requirement for MH to be at all successful outside Japan. We won't be seeing any more MH games localized until they have online.

Of course there's Frontier, but that would be a monolithic effort to set up and maintain outside Japan, which they didn't want to bother with.

The Wii MH was a pretty big success outside of Japan and it being a Wii game it might as well have had no online at all. You're dreaming if you think the 3DS version won't make it over. I think NHP3 will make it over, but I don't know in what form.

I could see MH4 making it over. It's open-world, and Westerners definitely like that. There's a good chance it'll have online play. But the ship for a P3rd/3G localization has sailed.

I've got no source for this either, but word is making it around that some Vita games are going to be announced tomorrow. Here's hoping for a localization of Persona 4 Golden.

It's a Japan-only event, not gonna announce localisations - tho I'm sure it will make it.

Meanwhile, numbers from the fine sales nerds on gaf:

GBA June 11, 2001 870K
PSP March 24, 2005 619K
NDS November 21, 2004 480K
3DS March 27, 2011 ~400K
PSV February 22, 2012 220-230K

(those are terrible numbers, fyi)

To put things into perspective, around 550,000 PS Vitas were sold during the week of its western launch (in the USA, 225,000 Vitas were sold during the first 4 days).
Kindly don't post numbers without telling us which region they are supposed to be from. Those numbers can't be American launch day sales, and they aren't global launch day sales, either.

Anyway, PS Vita is currently doing fine. Japanese sales continue to be low, but globally it outsold Xbox 360 by ~30% last week.

They're US launch month sales. This is NPD data. You aren't 'putting things in perspective', you are obfuscating.

Both of which you didn't mention in your post.

Launch month, I see. I suppose it's "obfuscating" to mention that PS Vita's launch month was only 4 days long.

He's fighting the good fight on behalf of his Vita.

I always like to see good old fashioned console allegiance, even if this thread has actually convinced me I don't want one.

One thing we already knew about, and one that was pretty much a given. Great.

The Vita version of MGS HD won't have Peace Walker. This probably has more to do with the 4 GB limit of Vita cards than not wanting to cut into Peace Walker PSN sales.

LOL WUT. Please tell me that's imposed by temporary supply chain constraints or somesuch and isn't a fundamental limit of the format.

What difference does it make? Nobody's going to be dumb enough to blow money on making games that actually fill all that space. At worst, watered-down ports of HD console games will just be a little more watered-down.

Not counting pre-rendered hd videos and uncompressed audio, are there really any games that are larger than 1GB at this time? I'd assume most are a couple of hundred MB at best.
Anyway, there already are 32GB microsd cards and those are much smaller physically than PS Vita game cards, so there is no reason to belive that 4GB is going to be the upper limit.

Developers will fill whatever space they feel they need to unless they're deliberately trying to make the medium cheaper (smaller ROM, smaller download, avoiding multiple discs) or fit within some upper limit of a format. I'm mostly surprised at the idea that Vita, which could reasonably be expected to get a lot of PS3 ports/spinoffs, tops out at 4 GB when PS3 tops out at 50 GB.

Anyway, I wonder if perhaps the size limit has more to do with online distribution than with any inherent limitation of the card format. Apart from CDN costs and issues of download time vs. battery life, it would be a shitty deal to have to blow an extra $60 or $100 on a memory card for each game you want to keep handy.

It currently is a limit of the format. Sony says there will be higher capacity cards in the future, but for now, developers can't use any larger than 4 GB.

This was also the case with the DS, which saw much larger cards in its later life than were available in 2004.
