I was approaching this poll/topic as if the question was asking what my attitude towards shmupping was. That is, the creditfeeder/lolplayer choice is for those who only credit-feed, without any sort of higher goal (1CC, score) in mind. I will credit-feed once in a while as part of my practice. I view score play as the natural progression from survival. Ultimately I'd say my goal is score, but seeing as how I've yet to 1CC a shmup of any significance, that's setting the bar too high.

Anyways, I know it wasn't a serious poll (PCBing being unrelated to playing and Touhou being an unfair generalization), but I've conveniently chosen this topic to sort of introduce a bit about myself, so there.

They're not easy for everyone. Everyone is a super-special snowflake. Some things are just harder for other people, and anyone who doesn't understand that is clearly a fucking nazi.

I was thinking of a US episode, first season.

Prefer playing a shmup for score, so it's important that it's engaging and not too frustrating. So far I enjoyed MushiFutari, EspI II BL, Akai Shin for scoring.
Espgaluda III needs to happen.

Kind of, but that's the game. Getting impatient and bored of early stages can lead to stupid deaths so it's all part of the Zen... man.

Had to comment on one thing, though:

[quote]
...'silly' challenges like doing things without bombs or similar...
[/quote

Well, the doing things without bombs is not exactly silly. Many games award bonus points for stockpiling bombs, that's part of a simple scoring system.

Good old Sky Shark/Flying Shark? End of stage bonus of 3000 points per bomb in stock before the bombs are reset back to 3 for the next stage, quite a simple and obvious scoring system. Outzone? Same thing and they allowed stockpilling up to 10 bombs plus 5000 points for each bomb collected whle still holding 10 bombs. Also Gekirindan but they also factor in the eagle-like medals that have been collected.

Raiden I/II/III? Number of bombs times (number of ribbons * 1000) + (3000 points per miclus). Again, that's the simple scoring system, not a silly challenge.

There's obviously much more games than that. But not using bombs and getting extra points as a reward has been the most basic scoring system for a long while, it's not a 'silly' challenge.

Just think of it as the number of B in stock means the number of saves to prevent losing a turn, but in a lot of games also that holding on to them means bonus.

Silliness is only based on the expectations of the one labeling.

I wanted to pick bro gamer just to honor the excellent image choice :D

PCB Master race certainly appeals to the side of me that fetishizes ancient arcade relics like some Indiana Jones villain. I blame Dave_K and the effect of seeing his setup at an impressionable age.

I chose survivalist, although I love playing for score once I understand a game well enough. To date, I'm still enjoying too many different shmups to devote time to one for respectable scores though. But I love that that aspect awaits me when its "TIME TO GET SERIOUS" hehe...

I'm kinda cross between survivalist and lolplayer. I can beat a few old shoot-'em-ups, but there's no way I can see myself becoming a formidable player of the new, bullet-hell types. I chose lolplayer just 'cause I haven't been playing old shoot-'em-ups once I got back into gaming in late 2010 8)

since I don't like PCB (or grazing in general) as much as the other Touhou games, I'll vote Touhou instead as it covers the other games as well :D

Mima isn't a loli, do your research :( (original waifu do not steal)

Naut has a point, though, it's rare to see the inverse occur (the groups he mentioned doing equally as well in Touhou games), statistically speaking. (way to say "I'm not saying anything, the statistics are" :D)

Surprisingly (in b4 Kogasa), you also have a point, in that there are a lot of Touhou fans who aren't interested in the games (the fighting games included), and are instead interested in the other stuff (official and fanmade), and imho it's okay to have other ways to enjoy a series (though I'd rather have them at least remember that canon -- the games included -- exist, and to be more open-minded towards other shmups instead of spamming Youtube comments about how Larsa sucks :D).

Yeah and everyone who doesn't understand why people use stage practice or save states because they find the earlier parts too easy and boring is a nazi too. As I started up a game like this, I got to Stage 5 very quickly. I perfected the first two stages sight-read and I find them boring now. Should I then have to play through those stages everytime while I memorize an effective approach for Stage 3, 4 and 5? Which I did in 3 hours thanks to Stage Practice. Would've taken a lot longer without it.

Nothing wrong with save states.

Anyone who tries to take some demented moral stand or something against save states like they're evil or something is a numpty.

The tool is available to you, it's foolish not to use it.

If you don't want to then fine, but if people use them and get an advantage over you there's no room for you to bitch about it!

I guess since I can't play a shmup without thinking about the score and games with stupid/unfair scoring systems (I'm looking at you ddp dfk) make my head explode, that would make me a score player. That doesn't mean however that I can actually 1cc any game or score very high either... :D

Oh btw, I cleared Deathsmiles stage 1 on rank 3 as two player coop, playing the other character with my feet and it was actually the loli I played with my hands that died first.

@ Zengeku3 and Illyrian - No one is taking any moral high ground or being a nazi about using save states and practice modes etc. The thread is called what type of shmupper are you after all.

I'm lucky enough to go to an arcade that have these games in, so I enjoy playing in there (when the screen / joysticks work  ) more than at home on my own grinding a stage over and over.

I can see that practicing stages is probably a faster and better way to improve at a game - I just can't, I find it boring, irritating and less fun.

EDIT: I've just reread both your posts and it's weird how you feel under attack by the odd comment about not using save states and practice modes. Why so sensitive?

Oh, and Illyrian, next time you in Casino you're in for a slap

DOUBLE EDIT: Actually I couldn't give a toss - though the slap still stands.

I play for score, and I wish I could knock that shit off because I'm not nearly competent enough. I think it comes from growing up with 80's shooters suck as Flying Shark and Slapfight, where if you got further, you scored higher. It doesn't work that way any more, and I'd probably be able to 1'CC a few Cave games if I gave up on scoring, but it's part of my mindset that I simply can't put to one side. I know for a fact I'd be a lot more efficient at Mushi if I ignored the fucking counter.

SWY says he has to clear a game before playing it for score. I think it's a good idea, because in order to learn how to kill each enemy, you have to learn certain things about it (e.g. where it is, how long it takes to die, its pattern and when it's fired, etc.) that give you a huge advantage when you go to play for score: familiarity/a mental map.

I find scoring much easier to focus on after I've cleared it, the pressure to prove to myself that I even can clear it is all gone at that point.

Surprised at the large amount of survivalists, compared to for score players. From the posts on this page, I got the impression that most were for score players. I kind of felt ashamed at my lack of skills, to play for score.

Well, I'm ashamed no more!

That's the way I should go for now. I know everyone is kind of sick of Futari around here, but I've nly had it a few weeks so it's my current obsession, and there are so many times where I've died because the counter is geeen and I'm sticking to shot, instead of doing what my brain is telling me to do, which is 'clear the screen of threats quickly with the laser and fuck score'. Same for hoarding bombs, I actually thought DDPR had changes that behaviour, but apparently not. I will 1'CC this though.

You play BL Original, right? If your main concern was killing things with the right shot type you were probably playing it wrong anyways. Just about any replay with a competent score (1.5 billionish) has the player staying in the top half of the screen for the majority of the game pointblanking the hell out of everything.
