I was banned from playing games as a kid so no arcade games, but eventually at a friend's house got to Gradius III on the SNES. Somebody gave him a whole garbage bag full of SNES carts for his birthday, that lucky bastard.

To be honest I can't really remember - whatever shooters were on Amstrad since that was my first computer.
The first shmups I remember playing are R-Type and Gemini Wing on Amiga although I'm sure I played others before.

That Sky Attack pic is giving me flashbacks. There was a similar Tomytronic game called 3D Shark Attack.

I also remember owning Grandstand's Astro Wars (also released as Galaxy II).

You know, in my youth "kids going to arcades" was also frowned upon by lots of people.BareknuckleRoo wrote:That sounds awful.Ixranin wrote:I was banned from playing games as a kid so no arcade games
At least for a while it was like doing a completely forbidden thing, we'd have to play alongside street kids, dirty people, probably young drug addicts and all of that. In some places this still happens today.

No, having an Amstrad as your first machine sounds awful. Either Speccy conversions but slower, or C64 conversions, with a tiny play area and slower. Poor guy.

Well never having a Speccy or C64 I was oblivious to this fact.Marc wrote:No, having an Amstrad as your first machine sounds awful. Either Speccy conversions but slower, or C64 conversions, with a tiny play area and slower. Poor guy.

I probably wouldn't want a kid going to an arcade if the ones in Brazil are anything like the ones in Japan. Fuck that smoking.Kollision wrote:You know, in my youth "kids going to arcades" was also frowned upon by lots of people.BareknuckleRoo wrote:That sounds awful.Ixranin wrote:I was banned from playing games as a kid so no arcade games

Giga Wing, Viper Phase One, and that helicopter shmup whose name escapes me (If I recall, you perform special movements with the joystick and the buttons to perform special attacks.). All of them happen to be at a Nickel City near my location.
Glory with the Moon. Mercy on the Earth.

I guess this is the thread where new guys introduce themselves by telling everyone what their first shmup experience was.
My memory is a bit hazy, but I think my first "shmups" were those special stages in Turrican II. And no, I'm not an Amiga fan.
