Psyvariar Complete: how hard is it to find?

Post by Carmen »

I don't have a Japanese PS2 yet (and no way I'm modding my American L.E. one), but I have a very keen interest in this game. Its only a matter of time before I acquire a Japanese PS2 system, but until then I'll be searching adamently for PC. Can anyone tell me how easy or hard it is to find this game (or better yet, one of the 'special' editions it came with), what sources I should look at, and how much I should expect to cough up?

For the special editions look on Ebay, Play-Asia and Yahoo Japan. They are not that hard to find, but expect to pay around $50-80.

Actually Play-Asia has a Psyvariar: Complete Edition (Special Capture Box) in stock now:

The standard complete edition is common, and I see it for sale all the time on Ebay, usually goes for around $20-30

Outta curiosity, what different stuff came with the two "special" boxes?

As for the "standard" Japanese release, for a long time I never saw it on eBay (though some stores sold it for 60-70 bucks, ick), so I kept my eyes open for the two Superlite releases of Medium Unit and Revision, and bought them separately (though it took me a bit to find Revision); of course, not long afterwards an affordable Complete Edition (two of them, actually) finally came on eBay, but hey, heh. Maybe it's becoming a bit more available now...

Sound Box has the OST, Capture Box a superplay DVD.

Which of the two special packs is better you think? I've heard some of the music from Psy2 - Ultimate Final, and I really like it, but thats a differant game as it is...

seriously, get a SwapMagic flip-top mod and boot discs for CD & DVD games. that altogether should cost you $30-40, depending. no mod chip needed, plus who cares about keeping a PS2 in mint, unmodded condition? the damn things only last a few years anyway. then just get the PAL version and load it as PAL with the CD boot disc.

I'm a sucker for Superplay DVDs. If I liked the game that much, I'd splurge for the capture box... assuming I could find it.

It's not one of my all time favorite shooters though, so BIG's Korean release he sold me will do. :)

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe there's been a sealed version of Psyvariar Complete for 2 years on Ebay.

I bought a new sealed Psyvariar Complete Capture Box version

I bought a new sealed Psyvariar Complete: Capture Box edition for a mere $31.00 USD a few years back on eBay! It was primarily for the Psyvariar DVD itself since it has both Superplays of Psyvariar Medium Unit & Psyvariar Revision G-Cards running on a Taito G-Net motherboard setup...is professionally screen-caputured. I enjoyed watching the Psyvariar Revision Superplay so much that I ended up buying a Psyvariar Revision Taito G-Card just to play it on my Taito G-Net mobo setup.

It is the Psyvariar Complete: Sound Box edition that is harder to find...I think Success Corporation should've released a Special "Capture & Sound" edition so one can have the best of both Superplay DVD & OST Music CD along with a PS2 CD-Rom of the Psyvariar MU & Psyvariar-R games -- for a total of three discs special premium "Psyvariar Ultimate" package.

Revision by far, unless you only want to be able buzz everything once. Obviously this makes Medium harder, but the whole point of Psy games is buzzing.

Thanks, Nemo. I'm going to go order it from NCSX. I don't have any of the Psyvariar games, and I think I want to try one of the cheaper titles before I get Psyvariar 2.

I personally prefer Revision, though I'm sure there are others who disagree...Medium Unit feels a bit more "traditional," in that even though you buzz as much as you can you still have to dodge a lot; in Revision, since you can buzz bullets more than once, you'll find yourself buzzing enough to gain invincibility and then rushing headlong into big clumps of bullets, hoping to buzz enough to keep the invincibility going...it somehow reminded me of the Zanac games, and grabbing the little circle powerups and then rushing to a safe spot before the invincibility wears off. Both are worth owning if you can get 'em at a reasonable price, imo.

^^^Good, sounds like I made the right choice-- Revision is in the mail. (I'm actually more excited about getting the hori dpad for the GC, which I ordered as well-- I'm not too fond of the tiny one on the standard controller.)

I've got my Psyvariar complete edition PAL, sealed, two weeks ago on ebay from seller "laptopsparesshop" for 9.07 UKP incl. shipping (I'm in France).

Good luck.

^^^It seems that Europeans are perceived to have a greater interest in shooters than us Americans. There seem to be several shooters for PAL that don't get a US release. Nice find, fl0w.

^^ Yea that is probably true, R-Type Final was voted by the viewers as the second best game of 2004 on a TV show here in Sweden. There may be many "retrogamers" here, but seeing a shmup ranking better than HalfLife 2 and Halo 2 was surprising  And shmups are often on top lists in European magazines too, pretty weird as those games still do not seem mainstream at all.

...whereas the US press ignores them entirely. It doesn't matter though since Euro shooter sales may be at least decent while it's got to suck hard in the US. The commercial failure of Gradius V even at a budget price probably pinned the coffin down over on this side of the pond.

So did Gradius V not sell well here? I guess I would have figured as much. I found a new copy of it at EBGames just yesterday, and bought it for my nephew in California. I'm doing my small part to instill a love of shooters in the next generation.

I've got R-Type Final PAL for 9.62 euros...

I might get Gradius V for free one day, I know a Belgian whose friend works in a videogame shop: 100 G5 in stock, 0 sold...

Tsk, its really a shame. Of course Gradius V wasn't going to revolutionise the genre's place in the US, but it should have at least pushed over more copies then it did. It kind of makes me wonder if we'll stop seeing retro-game compilations in the US period (its pretty obvious that we won't get any more shmups here).

Just to chime in... the JPN release of Complete was hard as hell to find in the first half of 2005. The PAL release, on the other hand, is all over the place. Most ebay listings are for the PAL version or the occasional Medium Unit Japanese version (and less often Revision Japanese single game). Perhaps the trend is changing, but a Japanese Pysvariar Complete was very, very tough to get for most of the past year.

I hunted for a replacement for my Complete for months, religiously checking ebay and all of the import stores (even some obscure ones). No luck - I even ordered once and got a "sorry, we're out of stock" reply. I was looking for about 5-6 months to no avail, posted on message boards (including this fine board), nothing. Finally just bought the two singles from the Superlite 2500 re-releases. I'm plenty happy with them, as I just want to play the games.

And the games are both quite different, and both worth playing. I agree that Medium Unit feels a bit more traditional. Both excellent games though...
