What was the first shump you ever played?

Space Attack, a Galaxian clone for the Emerson Arcadia:

soon after my dad brought home ...
Jump Bug:
Which was totally awesome, but I only later discovered that the arcade original is very different and a sidescroller:

Played Space Invaders when it started popping up in CA.
Re: What was the first shump you ever played?
Probably those two levels in Super Mario Land.
Re: What was the first shump you ever played?
parsec and space invaders on TI 99-4a.
parsec pic here:

Re: What was the first shump you ever played?
Pretty sure it was Galaxian for me, although the one that really got me into the genre was probably Raiden.

In all likelihood it was either Galaga or Space Invaders.

Re: What was the first shump you ever played?
First fixed shoot-em-up (NB: of which the shortened form shump is derived from) was the Atari 2600 version Space Invaders. An honorable mention goes to Atari 2600 Combat for a maze arena with an overhead view for the Tank and Tank Pong games (billiard shots), a side view for the Bi-plane games and an overhead view for the Jet Fighter games--both the Bi-plane and Jet Fighter games allowed flying through the air.
First fixed axis arcade shmup was Namco's Galaxian.
First omnidirectional shmup and also first arcade shmup was Atari Asteroids.
First arcade horizontal scrolling shmup was Konami's Super Cobra (distributed by Stern cabinet version).
First arcade vertical shmup was Namco's Xevious (distributed by Atari cabinet version).
First isometric shmup was arcade Sega/Gremlin's Zaxxon.
First arena shmup was Williams' Robotron: 2084.
First tube style shmup was Atari's Tempest.
First maze-oriented shmup was Stern's Berzerk.
First 3-D style first person space shooter shmup was Star Fire by Exidy.
(I think that covers all genres, even if some don't count some of the types as actual shmups.)

Adding my "Only idiots ask" vote. If you have enough intelligence to join these forums, then you can make up your own damn mind whether to risk an import. Does a hot stove burn? Touch it and find out! Now someone ask an intelligent question...

Re: What was the first shump you ever played?
The first best of the best game ZANAC on NES. Game is amazing! Need ports =)

Re: What was the first shump you ever played?
So for me it would have been R-Type on the Gameboy, my mum bought it for me on my 7th birthday. I asked for it purely because the box looked nice.
It was extremely good fun but I could never get past the level (3rd I think) where the battleship tries to crush you.
After I started playing shumps in 2008 it was dodonpachi. One of my online friends sent me MAME UI 32 and the roms for Dodonpachi, Progear and Guwange and by random chance it was dodonpachi I played first.
The first game I really enjoyed a lot was Imperishible Night on easy difficulty, it was my first 1cc. I actually remember setting lives to 7 and spanking 2 full credits on that game and not finishing it a number of times back when I first started playing.
Strange to look back at that now.
Who else here remembers how crap they were in their first week of playing?

Re: What was the first shump you ever played?
For me it was Star Force on NES. I remember reaching level 15-16 as a kid, I can't do it today surprisingly (I need TO DO THAT). I loved the gfx, music and the addictive gameplay. However fast forward to 2003 and that was far before I even knew shmups forums existed.
I played Thunder Force V, a game that blowed my mind with it's awesomeness. I remember beating Training Mode and I was like oh what only 4 stages? Then I decided to play Normal mode, the game whooped me hard and I kept game overing around stage 4. Then I got to stage 5... that was incredible what I saw, I kept going further then when I kept losing to final boss and kept getting bad ending. I realised that the only reasonable way I can get the good ending, is to beat the game with no continues. Some months later and I pulled it off! My first shmup 1cc happened and I got the good ending! Good times, I still regularly play the game from time to time. I'm not as patient as I used to be though.
Then in 2005-2006 I found this forum and my journey has begun since, too bad I dropped the whole 1cc thing recently because I lack nerves and time for that. So I just credit feed crap outta the games and enjoy them.

Re: What was the first shump you ever played?
I think mine was Transbot on my friend's Master System. At the time I thought it was fantastic. In retrospect, not quite so great.
About the same time another friend lent me Dragon Breed for my Sinclair Spectrum. I can't actually remember playing the game, just the awesome box art!
I followed these pretty closely with R-Type on the MS though, which was a bit of a game-changer.
Actually, I remember being in a childrens ward when I was young (having my tonsils removed, I think) and they had a toys and games room which had a Space Invaders cocktail unit. I remember a nurse had to come along every so often and use a key to reactivate freeplay. That might have been my earliest one.

Raiden Fighters 2. I should note that it was the 2000 edition (though I don't remember the sound quality being bad nor do I remember it saying anything about China), and I sucked terribly at it.
Raiden Fighters JET was next and from there I was hooked.

Re: What was the first shump you ever played?
Space Invaders on some home rental system my neighbour and friend had rented.
In the arcade? Also space invaders in a cocktail cabinet. Black background and green graphics. ship, bunkers and aliens, all green. I've never seen that version since. It's usually aliens and ship white and the bunkers green. And the UFO red.

Re: What was the first shump you ever played?
Oh Tomy-Tronic I remember those!
Most of my initial gaming life in the 80s was with single game devices like these until the Spectrum +2 launched. Most folk tend to talk about Nintendo Game and Watches and Coleco tabletops, but for me its was cheap and tacky game & watch clones and Tomy Tabletops, pinball machines and bubble games
Does anyone remember the red Tomy Donkey Kong Tabletop? It must be rare cos I cant find anything on the net about it.
Actually the Tomy tabletop version of Scamble might be my very first shmup http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lB8UW79CYfY

Earliest I can remember was Asteroids, at some pizza parlor where I used to live.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
Re: What was the first shump you ever played?
It was a combo cartridge, came with two games, Verytex and Battle Squadron, both shmups for the Mega Drive.
Re: What was the first shump you ever played?
Might've been Life Force on the NES.

Oh, I wasn't even thinking of these kinda games. In that case, I still own my first ever shmup in it's original, ridiculously shiny packaging!TrevHead (TVR) wrote: Actually the Tomy tabletop version of Scamble might be my very first shmup

(The photo really doesn't do the shinyness justice).

Re: What was the first shump you ever played?
Mine was probably NES Life Force too. First game with a small hitbox I played though was Gradius V, which I sort of bought as an impulse buy. My mind was blown when I read the instruction manual and learned you only died if the cockpit got hit.
Now that I look at it again, the instruction manual doesn't mention the hitbox. I musta read that elsewhere.

Either Galaxian or Exerion for the Famicom. Then on the arcades Aero Fighters.
I didn't play shooters seriously until one year ago though.

Scramble on arcade when I was like 7 or 8
