No love for Vasara?

Post by BeruBeru »

I never seen anyone here talking about Vasara 1 and 2.
From what I played, those are actually really fun and epic with nice bullet-cancelling mechanic.
Any reason no one talks about it?

I run the HS threads for the series, check my sig. :)

I like the games, but they're definitely not for everyone, as they're much more focused on melee attacks than most shooters - the first one in particular is also reliant on milking for high scores if you're determined when it comes to that sort of thing. I still enjoy 'em when I'm in the mood for something different though.

I like them more than most Psikyo games, which they have a bit in common with. The first game is my favorite. I don't like how they merged the melee attack with bombing in the second game, but I still think it's a cool game.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

I love the Vasara games.

Probly the best use of melee in a shmup, imo.

Love the feeling of fighting my way in close to a big enemy and finishing them with a slash.

I have Vasara, but haven't given it much cab time yet. In the few credits I played, it seemed pretty easy what with the bullet cancelling melee and all, but I imagine it will reveal itself to me with time. I am into the whole "ancient Japan" aesthetic in shmups, and that and Sengoku Ace/Blade were two of the first pcbs I picked up.

does anyone like the sequel more? I have only heard middling and negative things about it so far.

Oh, it will.

In my opinion it does some things better than the first, other things not so much - I personally like the "bomb" system better (Vasara attacks could show up at somewhat random times in the original unless you purposely avoided collecting gems, and couldn't really be "saved for later"), as well as the less milk-reliant scoring, though some might dislike the more "chain-ish" elements introduced to it at the same time. All in all, though, I'd say that if you like the first you'll probably like the second as well.

Not much dodging to be done considering that scoring is pretty much just spamming melee.

However, it still manages to be difficult and scoring is really interesting. Gotta kill those enemies that are on screen for about a half second.
