Not sure how good their numbers are, but VGChartz says that Uncharted has sold 130K units in US+Japan, so the UK numbers seem roughly in line with that. There are zero PSV games on their top 30 US preorders list (which bottoms out at ~50K units), but that might be explained by some major retailers not taking (or not advertising) preorders for most of the announced games yet.

So what's the deal if you buy an PS Vita with the 3G option?

And do you have to sign up with AT&T for the 3G service on a monthly basis or is it on a yearly basis type of deal?

Edited 2/28/2012: Asked an Best Buy employee and he said that 3G service is provided on a monthly basis by AT&T on the PS Vita handheld.

VGChartz make up their numbers, then go back and correct them once real numbers are released. They are scum.

Exactly. There is a reason why they are also known as "madeupchartz". They have no relevant sample size to determine anything. Their weekly charts are largely guesstimates. The only thing that website is good for is historical data (=after it has been corrected).

Yep, citing VGChartz data as fact is strictly banned on NeoGAF.

From what I can tell they appear to correct their hardware numbers after real market research data and information from the console makers becomes available; the way they treat software sales data is at best spotty (quite unreliable and I wouldn't trust it at all). What I find most annoying is that they never list any sources, and don't denote changes made after the fact either.

Right now they claim that after the western launch PS Vita's global install base has now reached 1.4 Million; 380,000 in Europe (330,000 3DS were sold during its first week in Europe) and 300,000 in the USA (420,000 3DS were sold during its first week in the USA). Of course as usual no sources are listed, so treat it with a huge grain of salt. We'll get real numbers soon enough.

I was really excited to get to play with this thing at a local Best Buy this past weekend.

The first thing that I really noticed was how small the d-pad and face buttons were, also thought the sticks were gonna be bigger.. oh well.
I guess they had to go small with them to keep the machine size down due to the large screen.
Then I remembered that the psp go would let you bluetooth link a ps3 controller to play games with so I looked it up for the Vita.
Apparently it will not. Whatever.

After looking up the current state of smartphone SOCs, it looks like Sony still has a window to establish this as a viable platform on the basis of having leading-edge hardware. It's a narrow one, though. Cortex-A15 is coming, and it probably won't be merciful. I think part of it depends on how Nvidia's push for high-end Android games plays out (e.g. if they push for highly Tegra-specific stuff and Tegra 3 bombs vs. if they push for something more general that can readily transfer to the next gen of OMAP/Exynos/Snapdragon).

Sony issued a press release that said 1.2 million. That said, the figures used in Sony press releases also usually refer to "shipped" (sold to retailers) versus "sold" (sold to end-users).

We pretty much have to rely on a company like NPD to get sales figures for what is bought by consumers.

Got a source for that? I only found this, but again no source: http://gamingbolt.com/ps-vita-sells-ove ... lion-units

Forbes also says 1.2 Million, but the article obviously means sold to consumers.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/johngaudios ... price-cut/
Unfortunately, no source is given, either. Shoddy journalism.

Anyway, nice example of madeupchartz being off by 20%.

EDIT:
Sony has confirmed that it's 1.2 Million sold to consumers.

Software sales (retail + PSN) are at 2 Million according to Sony's press release.

So 600,000+ PS Vitas sold in the west in 5 days. Good launch. Not stellar, but good.

It's a worldwide launch, so basically "every country except Japan". The EU, New Zealand, Australia, Southeast Asia, etc...it includes countries that you usually don't call "the west".

EDIT: It seems that the Japanese press release mentions that it includes pre-orders when coming up with the 1.2 million number.

Yes, and why shouldn't it. It does not include cancelled preorders.

I just learned that Gravity Rush has only been released in physical form in Japan (called Gravity Daze there). The game looks like one of Vita's most promising exclusives and I seriously hope it gets a retail release in the rest of the world, too.
There are still those who like to actually own the things they buy...

It's getting a retail release in North America, and will supposedly be digital-only in Europe.

Kind of silly that it's not going to be released here until late May. Should have been a launch/near-launch title. Hope they include some DLC or something to compensate for that.

I've played the demo of Gravity Daze. It LOOKS amazing, but the combat is absurdly easy. I found it more difficult to get enemy attacks to hit me than to kill the enemies. Not to mention that your lifebar seems virtually infinite. Think I'll pass on the game after all.

The gravity shift gimmick is cool; I just can't see the open-world level design doing anything particularly interesting with it. It's also infested with meaningless collectables and "RETURN TO COMBAT ZONE" invisible barriers.

Why? That's only Japan, we already knew Vita was selling very little in that region at the moment. Nothing has changed there since last week to expect a sudden alteration. It's much too early to make any long-term predictions. Strange choice of consoles in this, by the way. Where is 3DS?

Here, this is stuff that matters for the western reception of PS Vita:
Forbes PS Vita Review: "Sony Hits a Triple With its Latest Console"
Positive articles in western media that is read by educated adults with nice disposable income.

Vita bordering on the Xbox 360 level of irrelevance in Japan is a pretty big deal, I would think.

Handheld sales in Japan for the past three weeks(as tracked by Media Create):

Feb 06 - Feb 12
3DS - 67.558
PSP - 15.860
PSV - 13.939

Feb 13 - Feb 19
3DS - 94.667
PSP - 14.824
PSV - 12.309

Feb 20 - Feb 26
3DS - 76.322
PSP - 15.928
PSV - 11.186
Positive articles in western media that is read by educated adults with nice disposable income.

It is a weird choice of consoles, but the 3DS is kicking the Vita's proverbial sales figure ass in Japan at the moment. Its presence on the chart wouldn't make things look any greener.

"And when you step back and look at the whole consumer electronic market, the Vita is… a bit of a gamble."

See, I don't think the Vita is destined for X360 style failure in Japan. I think it will find its market with price drops and some killer software apps. But I see it being very slow; something Sony are used to by now. Neither the PSP or PS3 had the kind of starting sales performance of their previous consoles.

As the Forbes reviewer stated, the electronic consumer market has changed dramatically. Home consoles have their own niche, everything handheld is proliferated by iphones and androids and hardware devs need to be doing more than the usual shrink-a-home-console idea.

Sony are always technically impressive, but their imagination sucks balls. That was established as soon as we saw the PS3 controller.
I think the market wants something inspiring for consumers to be torn from their 69p smartphone games.

@Jonathan Ingram

Would you mind also looking up Vita's Japanese software sales numbers for the period, and then compare them to 360's in order to put your statement into perspective?

Anyway, a page ago you predicted doom and gloom for Vita, yet the western launch (which this thread is/was about) went decently. It didn't outperform, but certainly didn't bomb either.

It doesn't matter what 3DS is doing *right now*, as the chart was about launch sales and sales during the following weeks. Let me refresh your memory: 3DS sold very badly during its early life and looked very much like a failure when compared to it's predecessor, the DS. Which is part of the reason why Nintendo's stock value dropped by 50% at that time. 3DS only became a success several months later, after the 70 USD pricecut and release of system selling software (Mario, Zelda).

It's not an argument, let's try to keep that in perspective.

I appreciate you have much love for Sony, I'm just giving my two-bits on how I see the Vita fitting into the current marketplace. I'm well aware the 3DS was hopeless well after launch, I still haven't bothered to get one myself yet.

Like I said, I expect the Vita to improve, but I doubt it will ever shake up the world. If it becomes a designated shmup console or is hacked within an inch of its life, then I'll definitely consider getting one.

It was just thrown together by some dude on gaf for purposes of hilarity. There are graphs comparing the 3DS and Vita directly, but they're not terribly funny - in fact they're sobering - so I'm not gonna post them.

Anyway, barring some shocking announcement (which I almost expect at this point, things being this bad) the sales are gonna just keep going down, and they're gonna plummet in the West. You know from that high attach rate in the West that this thing is being bought by the hardcore, so even though it was a mediocre launch, we can expect sales to drop like a rock into the ocean once the games dry up.

Of course, you never know how things turn out. Capcom, for example, likes being a big fish in a small pond - witness their support of DC and GC - so maybe they or someone else will step up and throw the Vita a bone.

Same here. I could see it doing reasonably well in the long run.

If anything, it deserves success in order to show that Nintendo's anti-consumer region-locking of 3DS is the wrong way to go.

I agree with this. Fuck that. Even though NoE seems to have done a major face turn lately, which would benefit me (if I owned or planned to buy a 3DS), it still sucks.

It's the main reason why I'm not buying a 3DS (I own all other Nintendo handhelds). I want to be able to play American, European and Japanese games. There is no way I'm going to buy more than one 3DS. If I picked up a Japanese 3DS in anticipation of cool games that won't be loaclized elsewhere, then I wouldn't be able to buy any local games (=I'd have to import everything from Japan). Screw that.
So now I am waiting for 3DS to be cracked. Way to go, Nintendo, your loss.
