This looks exactly like the effect I get on the N64, so could this be fixed with an improved cable? My current cable is moulded and I'm a clutz at soldering anyway (though could probably manage one resistor) but I'd much rather just buy a cable if anyone sells them?

Looking for a better N64 S-Video cable
I occasionally like to drag my PAL N64 out of storage for a few games, especially now Fudoh has furnished me with a lovely S-Video to RGB converter. The S-Video picture on my N64 has a strange checkerboard pattern on it though. Originally I just assumed that was how the output was, but I was reading that, in the case of the Commodore 64, it could be fixed by adding a resistor to the cable. The Commodore screenshot here:-

I had a Sony Video/S-Video to RGB integrator switch which I dumped cheaply (well, just for postage). It can be used to play PAL systems likes NES or C-64 on the XRGB-3.

Are you using a proper PAL S-video cable?
The S-video cable for the PAL N64 needs extra components. See here:

I've no idea on the cable, it's just one I've had years, are you able to supply me a proper PAL one? By just picking one up at random on E-bay I'll probably get the same kind of thing again. Are you using a proper PAL S-video cable?
It's not the Sony YR-3000 Fudoh kindly furnished me with, I get the checker board pattern going into the Edge too.

Well I haven't seen the PAL ones listed in ages, as to am I able to supply, well yes but I am unable to actually test it, short of pulling the components out of one of my N64s, as I assume the required components are actually on the NTSC N64 and not the PAL model.BuckoA51 wrote:I've no idea on the cable, it's just one I've had years, are you able to supply me a proper PAL one? That's great, No problem about testing, I'll test it here and give you any feedback, I'll drop you a PM sometime early March about this? I want to order one of your newer SNES raw syncs too. Once again your services are invaluable Retro Access

No problem, I'll drop some 68nF caps in the regular order for parts this week (no worries if you don't go through with it, they are 1 cent each!)BuckoA51 wrote:That's great, No problem about testing, I'll test it here and give you any feedback, I'll drop you a PM sometime early March about this? The thanks should go to gamesx though, I don't have a PAL N64 to pull info from.
edit: PAL SNES can't do raw sync, just forewarning you in case you don't have the NTSC system.

Yep its a Super Famicom, already running nicely on one of your older raw sync cables, just a little noisy on the audio.

Re: Looking for a better N64 S-Video cable
Did you ever get s-video working correctly on the pal n64?
I've tried a couple of cables, both showing the checkerboard and wavy diagonal lines at different levels of intensity.
I've also got an NTSC n64 with its own cable, and that has a perfect s-video picture, so I know it's just the pal gear causing problems.

I've only seen the PAL cable on sale here, anyone able to confirm whether it's the correct one?

Re: Looking for a better N64 S-Video cable
Unfortunately this is the cable that's not working for me (the pal one obviously). It seems to be the correct brightness but the checkerboard and interference is still there.Xan wrote:I've only seen the PAL cable on sale here, anyone able to confirm whether it's the correct one?
I've also got his NTSC n64 s-video cable and that's working well with the NTSC n64. No checkerboard and no interference.
Just wondering if anyone's got a pal n64 working with a good picture on s-video.
