Any way to play Vimana with sound?
Short of buying the PCB, that is. Does the sound work in any version of MAME, or is there a decent port of it out there?

ThunderMAME32+ can run some Toaplan games with sound if you get the sound samples for the game.
Emulator
Sound samples
Inside the ThunderMAME folder, create a "samples" folder, create another folder inside with the name of the ROM, then dump all the sound samples inside. I haven't tried with Vimana but it worked fine with V-V and Fire Shark.

A minor correction: you just need to put the zip archive containing the wav files in the sample folder. Thanks for making this thread; I've been annoyed by the lack of sound in Vimana and Ghox for a while but thought asking about it would be pointless and dumb. Glad to see there actually is a "fix."
So it's just playing the sample files at the cues for sound code access instead of emulating them? Neat.

They need their MCUs dumped. Which I requires somebody with the board who cares and has the ability.

Everything works fine just Vimana not. Maybe because there are 2 zip files or do you know what I have to do, that it works fine as well.

I think you should only have one zip file containing the sound(s)
solution: unpack your 2 zips in one folder - zip this folder - name it "vimana.zip" & you're good to go

And once you get it working with sound enjoy playing Toaplan's first uncheckpoint shooter! Only way to make the game a challenge is to make it very hard in the dip switches. I'm being serious....

I tried it but it still does not work
.... the strange Thing is that vimana part 1 has samples from 00 to 22 and part to contains the same samples for 4 to 22 ...maybe this is the Problem and some ar missing... can't you just upload one rar file somewhere...

it's one split archive. Some files are split over both rar files... If you unpack properly you should have 33 .wav files.

I have 33 files und load the samples in mame but it's still not working...all other games are working with Sound...it's strange

I tried everything but it's not working. Can anybody please upload the merged file, that I just can donwload the zip put it in the sample Folder in Mame load it and it works

Man! This is great news! Just in time during my Toaplan obsession. Really wanted to try out Viama the most, since SameSame has a Genny port & V-Five has been dumped right last I checked (or is it only the Grind Stormer part that works?). As I sure wasn't gonna play Viama without sound fx & especially shmuping music. That's just crazy talk. And I won't hear of it. >_<

Did you use rapid fire toggle? Cause that's makes STGs way easier. And why not, it was balanced without rapid fire in mind. Me personally, I'm trying to get out of the habbit of using rapid fire. ... Er, ask me how I'm doing later. >_>;; (man, rapid fire in MAME sucks so much that you can't map two of the same buttons to one with rapid fire & the other without. If the build supports it, you can set a custom button to whatever the fire button is, and enable autofire on it. What's that you say, BIL? You say the secret lies in the "Custom Button" section? OK, off I goes to test this out! Thanks for the heads up, BIL!
EDIT - this whole custom button thing doesn't seem easy at all to figure out. I see it under autofire, and in main menu, and in game controls menu. But how I make it work is beyond me.

Once you figure out what you're supposed to do, it's extremely easy to setup. Go to custom buttons, and when you have custom button 1 or 2 or whatever one you want to use, press 1,2,3 or 4 to assign that button to that custom button. So if you press 1 then 2, it'll say "Custom Button 1: 1+2" as in pressing custom button 1 reads as button 1 + button 2 at the same time. It's unintuitive and weird that there's no message explaining what to do here, but once you figure it out it's easy peasy.
Then map autofire to that custom button, assign the custom button to a key, and voila, you have a custom button with autofire and you can still use the standard button 1 with non-autofire.
edit: This still really needs to be explained in MAME's menu better because I've had multiple people need ask what to do here and linked them to this post. Ah well.

Ah, cool. Very much thanks, Roo! Once you suggested it that you had to pretty much hit #1 on the keyboard, it clicked that instant since everyhting just falls into place after that stumbling block. Not sure I'd of ever figured it out on my own? Keyboards and gaming for me don't mix at all (I have everything set up on MAME so that I never have to touch a keyboard and still having access to "menu).

Hi there I just wanted you to know that the sound samples for "Vimana" in MAME that you submitted Part 2 of Vimana was empty nothing was in the RAR file.
Part 1 of Vimana had 33 files and the 2nd part had nothing. Question ? Why didn't you just compress one file of the sound samples for this game
instead of making 2 parts for this sound sample. It was disappointing to find out that after the download I still had no sound for this game. In Thunder MAME 32+ The emulator works fine and Fire Shark works fine along with V-5 but as you said you didn't try Vimana out so why post it. If you didn't try it out. Just saying is all. I really want sound for this game. Hopefully you can help me. If not that's cool. Just wanted you know what I discovered.
Any solutions ?? Let me know and message me back.
