Yeah, I don't give a hoot about multiplayer. I just wanted to make sure that the in-game characters will still be available if killed.

Don't agree with that at all. I think Dark Souls is a fantastic single player experience with a lot of ways to challenge yourself. If it's all about multi-player for you though, then enjoy it that way. I honestly think part of what is great about Dark Souls is that there are a lot of ways to play it.

I think the signs, phantoms of players, and other marks are genius.

I just don't want to play with anyone.

So far it hasn't been an issue, as I'm mostly in Hollow form anyway. If I keep getting worked by a boss later on, I'll pop into human form and summon some help...either NPC or human. Currently I'm at Blighttown, which is exactly what I'm looking for in this game: Tension. The Depths had it because I didn't find the bonfire until much later than I should have. Blighttown has been the same way. I had a huge amount of relief when I finally found the bonfire after making my way through all those narrow walkways. I don't fancy doing that with someone else.

Now that you say that, I guess I kinda did the first thing. My first New Game on my first character I did completely alone. And I usually never summon help on any of my games. I just do a lotttt of PvP. A lot. hah

There`s no lock-on in Monster Hunter, the recovery time after your actions is longer than in Souls, the stamina bar diminishes during a fight and needs to be replenished, weapons get dull rather quickly. You can spend half an hour hacking away at a monster with a bigass 2H-Sword only to have your entire life bar wasted in two or three tail swipes. Monster Hunter is much, much tougher in single-player compared to the Souls games. MH1-2 are especially brutal.

Hey thanks for the info. For some reasons I thought the serie to be some kind of Pokemon clone where you did collect monsters via turn-boring-based combat. Now all I have to do is put the game in my wii !

Word of advice on the boss summoning: if you really want to regain your bloodstain, do not go into human form before getting it back. Always a chance you'll be invaded and lose everything, especially around boss summon spots.

I like the balance of how if you want to get others to help you you also face the risk of getting attacked. I've done like half of my online play helping and invading people in the area before the four kings, fun to switch back and forth.

No, yellow summon signs should be the same range as white signs. Also, red soapstone signs and dragon eyes can be seen by anyone in the normal invasion range and anyone higher level than the placer, so you can basically pvp with anyone. Invasion by darkmoon covenant ring is without level limits too.
TrevHead (TVR) wrote:Are darkwaith players level capped when invading sinners?
You mean darkmoon blades? not sure, I've fought most of them in dark anor londo where they can auto-invade with the ring without limits. A lot of people probably know by know, should be easy to find info though.

I just figured out why I like this game. It's an easier, longer, and deeper Enclave.

Total simplification there.

But Enclave didn't have multiplayer.

You haven't truly enjoyed a Souls game until you've tried Multiplayer, whether helping or invading.

I think single player is where Dark Souls excelled. The best part of the game for me was exploring new areas, creeping along at a snails pace trying to not die. (For this reason I also haven't played it more than once)
In my experience, the multiplayer didn't work. Summoning other players worked about 5% of the time. I was never summoned. Messages disappear randomly and never have a rating above 1. I've been invaded once (though I can see why this is low - generally don't play as human) and when I was invaded it was at SL15 by someone who'd clearly gone through most of the game already. Can't see how any of that is fun.

I'm gonna assume you're playing on 360? Not saying its justified or right but the 360's userbase is CONSIDERABLY smaller than the PS3's and is much harder to get into a game.

That said, even when I was playing on 360 I was playing online constantly and consistently, having a blast.

Yeah, it's all about finding the right people. When you work with two strangers and your actions are all in unison about where to go, what to do, and how to strike, it's poetry in motion.

Multiplayer completely ruins the atmosphere of the game for me. I came from a background of playing the Kings Field games and the feeling of isolation against an oppressive world, with safe NPC interaction few and far between, is very important to the theme. I don't want random strangers helping me out and spoiling my desperate attempts at self preservation. I don't want random clue signs tipping me off and destroying my own exploration (even if I don't read them, multiple signs and bloodstains show something is up and wreck the surprise).

So my first playthrough I play mostly offline. Afterwards I'll join some multiplayer and screw around. Heck yea there is a lot fun to be had in screwing around in this game! But I want my first game to give me the full emotional experience, not Diet Coke Souls.

Back to playing Demon's Souls (which I haven't played since 2010.) It's funny to me how different these games are even though they are far more similar than anything else. Demon's to me is still the much harder game--it just has an incredibly raw edge; but perhaps this is because you don't go in knowing anything about the game. I love how you can roll after a strike and wish they'd not taken it out, but maybe they weren't happy how roll happy the game had become. Definitely much more nervous playing this game (perhaps it is because you are constantly playing with half-health.)

Anyway, it's awesome playing again from a Dark Souls perspective. If anything, Demon's is just so much stingier. Fewer souls, higher prices, less drops. I'm going for a dex/archer build this time, but not even looking forward to the price of arrows.

That's my take on it; but my first playthrough of Demon's I made a horrible build that was way too fragile and basically worthless for beating the game. It is really impossible for me to gauge now because the souls logic is ingrained in my playstyle; but it seemed with Dark Souls it was really impossible to mess up your build, where with Demon's Souls, bad choices could make your playthrough substantially harder or impossible. Perhaps it was also because so much with Demon's souls was very obscure, where with Demon's Souls it was very upfront about everything.

Finally, I would say the patch to Dark Souls made it substantially easier than Demon's Souls. Souls become way too easy to come by about mid-game. Almost guaranteed to be over-leveled by many of the later game bosses. I really love both games, but I don't understand the argument that some reviewers made (even pre-patch) that Dark Souls is harder than Demon's Souls.

Eh, I don't know about all this easier business. A lot of it has to do with preparation. If you don't know what to do, both seem a bit impossible.

Seeing as how I know exactly what to do now...Dark Souls is less frustrating, due to it's save system. No matter what kind of patience you have, to make it all the way through a stage(and yeah, I know you open up shortcuts on some), and then die on a boss...just to have to do it over and over to figure out how to kill said boss...makes it more frustrating.

They both have cheap kills(black knights, boulders, black skeleton samurais, red dragons). So, they can both surprise you..with death.

They're both tough. People just like to boast, when they say these games are easy. Either one. Well, unless you have played these to DEATH. Then of course, it's easy for you, and you really shouldn't be telling people it's easy, as it's coming from someone who knows every inch of the game.

Well that person wasn't me. None of my posts above say either game is easy.

I do agree though that the inclusion of many checkpoints is another factor that makes Dark Souls easier. Not harder. There are gamers who found Demon's Souls frustrating who I think might enjoy Dark Souls if only because it comes off as more accessible and just doesn't feel like it is smacking you in the face quite so hard.

Yeah, trying to keep this thread alive. So I'm continuing to play Demon's Souls (third build) and really digging it. Curious what some of you think about the obvious changes between this and Dark Souls.

No item burden
No world tendency (no more suiciding)
No character tendency (never even messed with this)
Armor can/needs to be upgraded (more grinding)
Nerfed rolling

I love both games, but am easily seeing things I really like about both. I feel like Demon's Souls ultimately has some better level design and more original imagery, but Dark Souls has the more coherent world. Love both of them.

Lessee...I just completed the Painted World after taking out the Bed of Chaos for the last human sister. In doing so I finally aquired all pyromancies for my +5 ascended flame. Lvl. 70 with 32 vit, 40 end, and 4 attunement slots. Every other stat is pretty much untouched.

I guess I go to the New Londo ruins from here? I'm thinking about grinding out some levels in the Painted World.

I still find quite a few issues with the game. Enemies tracking in mid-air still annoy the hell out of me. Hit detection is still spotty point blank. Wheel skeletons. None really matter at the end of the day.

I don't know ANYTHING about PC Gaming...so answer me this, guys...Will this fix the framerate? As far as I know, that stuff is solved with more RAM and faster processors. So, I'm guessing that would fix that. Right?

And more bosses? Yowza! Now, if we could just add some extra stuff to the endings.....

Sure, unless it`s poorly optimized. But even in that case it should still be possible to brute force smooth framerate with powerful PC hardware.

After about 600 hours with this, half sinleplayer, other half pvp'ing the Kiln, Londo etc, i think i'll finally retire.... Wan't to say thanks to all my Darkmoon Blade brothers and sisters out there who helped me storm the stairs of Dark Anor Londo, most of the times against the odds but making victory taste all that sweeter.
