That is some crazy ass art, did you draw it yourself?
No way, not artistic at all :) I think that one's David Choe:

I´m about to join the Candy Cab club, but I need your help fellow shmuppers. A local arcade operator has a shitload of Sega Aero and Astro Cities, and is willing to sell them at $450 USD for each unit (negotiable), including a NeoGeo MVS system and a cart of my choice. Since Candy Cabs are scarce here in Mexico, I´m willing to go ahead with the purchase (perhaps try and knock the price down $50-100 USD depending on general condition) , but I need to ask for advice here.

Which one is easier to TATE?
Anything I should be wary of with this machines? Wiring, stock monitor, PSU?
Buttons and sticks are probably crappy and cheap Chinese Zippy, is it easy to replace those with Seimitsu branded ones?
What about control panels? I figure it is easier to find a new control panel for an Astro City, but I really don´t know?

Anything else I might be forgetting? I appreciate your advice in advance.

Also I emailed the seller for pics of the cabs, I´ll post them when I get them.

I think TATE procedure is the same with either one - but neither has a rotating mech so it's a bit tricky.

Astro City has a larger monitor, and a more modern style -- the Aero City is very squarish and boxy. Astros are also lighter.

However, the style of the Aero might appeal to you more, and they seem to be less common.

Joysticks are dead simple to swap out - couple of screws and that's it. If you have your pick of machines, they might have different panels -- you'd probably want a 2L12B if you can get it for the most flexibility, but if these have all been in use as MVS cabs, they might only have 2L8B panels.

There may be a difference in power supplies, I'm not sure if the Astro PSUs have -5V?

to TATE on a cab w/o a mechanism you remove the screws in each corner that hold the monitor frame to the wood from of the cab. Pull out the monitor enough to spin it 90 degrees, rotate it and then put it back in and put the screws back. Then rotate the bezel also. It's simple but a pain in the ass because of how heavy a 29" monitor is. I don't ever want to mess with mine again.

Astro is a lot easier to flip IMO. With an Aero you have the hood in your face while trying to do it and it's lower to the ground. Probably not so much of an issue if you are doing it with another person, but I flip by myself. Astros you take the whole front hood assembly right off, unbolt, pull off the mounting struts, turn, place back and rotate the bezel and pop the hood back on; easy as pie and 5 minutes work.

To do an Aero by yourself you pretty much have to lie the cab on it's back, or try and do it leaning sideways under the hood. With an Astro you stand right in front of it, and because of the height, you hardly even have to bend.

Had the PCB probably 2 years now, first time it's been installed in a cab. Thanks to SMJ for the PCB and art, P-Man for fixing it way back, rancor for the autofire board and myself for building the adapter...

Oh no worries, the seller dropped it off in person, hooked up Dolphin Blue to it and let me have a crack at it. Everything seems to be in fine order. There is decent screen burn in, but I only notice it when there is a solid color with nothing else on it. Its all fine by me though, he gave me a deal I could not pass up, and even brought it into the house for me and showed me around it.

You are right though, I really need a pcb. Pretty much willing to get anything at this point. Lol.

My Vs. City has arrived in good shape, just missing a door and panels need to be reworked thats all (got the marque/fan covers on the side but its off at the moment)...

Image

Seller advertising it as non working and pretty much got it for the shipping cost (from the South Island to the North Island of New Zealand). He did not connect the 100V AC out from the power supply to the 100V AC in of the AC to DC transformer on top of the power supply which powers the JAMMA harness (Duh!) Should of press him more to get the triforce mobo and game...

I just had a wacky though -- could you run a VS as two seperate cabs?

I'm guessing you'd need:
  • - Second PSU
    - Second JAMMA Harness
    - Split/Reroute 2P controls/coin mech to 1P on second harness
Not sure how the monitors work? I'm guessing there's a splitter to clone the output on both?

Working on that right now for a back to back time crisis 2 setup :P I feel its more trouble than its worth tbh...

Wow, Congrats Dave-K! You getting close to having a complete rainbow of cabs yet? Would love to see a pic of the Orange (astro?), if you've got one handy.

I wrote up a review of the Red Storm and included a few more pics on my blog. Of course XB360 HD games look much better than upscaled PCBs.

The cab came with one of those cheap cga2vga scalers, and I added my SLG3000 so its doesn't look that bad actually, but at 640x480 the picture is a bit blurry. Native res for this screen is 720p, so I'll be looking into a better scaler/solution.

I was surprised that the cab was able to display 54hz Seibu games like Raiden Fighters and Viper Phase 1. But again, the cheap scaler really leaves a lot of be desired with some artifacting.

Not one of my most proud moments, as this was one of the first candy cabs I bought back in 2006 on the cheap locally and was aiming to convert it into a dedicated dreamcast cab (hence the orange/black color scheme). I didn't learn about this being a rare Astro 2 model until afterwards, and felt like an idiot. Live and learn. I'll restore it back to original white one of these days.

That's one of the coolest looking cab line-ups I've ever seen. I don't care if the orange Astro2 gets crap, I like it! Just think how great it would be to have a yellow cab and green cab next to those guys, it would be candy flavored yumminess! :P
