Most difficult games you've played that's not a shumps?
Clinger WIngers still kills me on battle toads. Of course that's because I'm playing under emulation. This is one game that MUST be played on the real thing, or the floaty controls will kill you on that level.
The rat race seems totally unfair, but you can cheeze your way thru it by killing the rat on the last race (laugh). you won't even havve to fight the boss!
The final level (revolution) is hard too, but it is fair.
Ghosts and goblins has only 2 loops. and yes, the second loop IS harder. Of course it doesn't help that the game forces you to use a weapon with short range against the final boss.

This thread is quite questionable. Where are final fight and Rolling Thunder (1 and 2)? Uhm, i'd add Metal Slug 3, too. Magic Sword is also demanding...Maybe Aliens vs Predator? I could 1-LC it, so dunno...

I'd definately 2nd(20th?45th?) 'Ghosts n' Goblins' and 'Ghouls n' ghosts' as being hard as fuck. I do, however, equate with the train of thought that says that 'Super Ghouls n' Ghosts' is made considerably easier due to it's double jump. The first two i merely scraped the surface of, whereas, 'Super' i finished the first loop. Shit weapons though. Other hair-tugging nominations are 'Don Doko Don', 'Ninja Gaiden'(PCE + X-Box), 'Rolling Thunder 2'(MD), 'Head over Heals' and 'Where Time Stood Still'(speccy).

I've finished the SMS version of Ghouls 'n' Ghosts... I actually looped it 3 times in a row. Does it count?
Oh, Zaphod said Raid-On Bungeling Bay... I've finished this game more than a dozen of times in the MSX, I even 1-lifed it. I used to like this game a lot.
But really, you guys should get a 8-bits computer emulator (Spectrum would be the best option) and try out some spanish games of that era...
Oh, I remembered other one: Bounder. I've heard this has more than 100 different levels, but I doubt anyone can get further than level 10 anyway.
And Jack The Nipper 2... GODDAMN, that not only was incredibly hard, but it probably take HOURS to finish. The map is HUGE, and usually when you need a certain object, this object is in the OTHER side of the map, and with you being able to carry only one object at time... I would like to know someone who had finished this game, the "puzzles" are so damn obscure and the thing is so big, I think it would take too many hours (years?) to just figure out the solution of the whole game. (Herr Schatten once told me he made about 50% of the game, but I cant remember now if it was 1 or 2... 1 I did about 90%, but failed to finish it)
La Abadia Del Crimen, a spanish 8-bit classic... it took more than 10 years after its release 'til I saw a full walkthrough of it. More obscure puzzles (For those who know the game, it took me a week just to figure out what the hell I was supposed to do in the dinner time.... this is just 0.01% of the game ,and if you dont find it out, its GAME OVER..)
Shadow Of The Beast 2 - I know people who claims to have finished this, but I claim they are liars or cheaters. THIS GAME IS IMPOSSIBLE. That's it.
Auf Wiedersehn Monty - It's from the same creators of Jack The Nipper 2 (Gremlin Graphics), and it suffers from the same problem - Big map, and one item needed is usually at the other side of the map. At least here you can carry lots of items, and the map is not as huge. I think I got close to finish it, but still it was extremely hard (And that was back at time when I used to spend more than 70% of my time playing games
)...

For me definately Out of this World and Heart of the Alien. There is just so little room for mistakes.
That sure is one dangerous planet. Alien, who is native to the place even, meets death at every step. Bats, acid, &c. and these people build their village right in the middle!

May we speak the beauty of thee, O Earth, that is in thy villages and forests and assemblies and war and battles.

Ow, Come on...
Out of this World is stupidly easy. It was largely criticized for being too easy back at the day. Not to mention that, if you know what you're doing, the game takes 30 minutes or less to be finished. It took me less than a week to finish it.
It's an AWESOME, WONDERFUL, FANTASTIC game, but really is very very easy.
Heart of Alien I wont say its easy, as I had the game in my home for 15 days and couldnt beat it.

As another thread here reminded me, Karnov, and once again, another tough cookie there. I've gotten my ass handed to me plenty of times on the NES version a friend of mine owned a few years back, the NES powerup system was strange because when you moved Karnov his powerup bar would move as well to the next item. The arcade version I find more bearable but still difficult.

I have no sig whatsoever.
It is too short perhaps, but easy? I'd like to see a person who plays the game for the first time and doesn't die every screen. If you admit the impossibility of this scenario then the game can only be typified as hard.Shatterhand wrote:Ow, Come on...

The game becomes short when you know what to do and easy if you know when and how to do it. But calling the game easy because of this is a fallacy, because even Contra Hard Corps becomes easy at this point.
I on the other hand finished Heart of the Alien, but Out of this World is still waiting to be.

Shadow III isn't that impossible. But II is irrationally hard. I've yet got to see someone finishing it as welllandshark wrote:All Shadow of the Beasts seem impossible to me.Shatterhand wrote: Shadow Of The Beast 2 - I know people who claims to have finished this, but I claim they are liars or cheaters. Alas, Ikaruga is going...
Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

Ninja Gaiden PCE hard???
This game is not impossible, in fact it's just too easy. The first time I got this game I cleared thru it in three hours.
The nes version of Ninja Gaiden is harder and, for a time, was near-impossible for me. But I've played this one to death and can beat the game with one life.

No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

La Abadia Del Crimen had like 312674362 fan-made remakes. It has a big fan base.
Shadow III indeed is doable, I got real close to finish it. 1 and 2 are impossible
I also finished NES TMNT, though I won't way it was an easy ride
And honestly, all those japanese games can't get close of the difficulty level of 8-bits european games. Back when I had better reflexes and dedicated more time to play games, I still couldn't finish most of those games.

I think there's a PC version in english, and the MSX 2 remake was done both in english and spanish.

Yes, I managed it just now. Last year I beat in on Easy, so I tried it on Normal today and didn't find it all that different. By far the most difficult portion is right before the final boss, when you have to navigate the chasm of ninja. This is maybe the most unfair portion of a videogame I've ever seen. As usual, it took me bags of credits to get down to the bottom.Bloodreign wrote:Anyone ever beat [Ninja Spirit] in 1CC or at all without cheating?
This game is so cool, but Irem ruined it by making it unreasonably hard. I think I can even accept everything up until the "chasm of death", but that part is just dumb. It's this close to being impossible.
