I start college tomorrow, help console me!!!
Even though I've been out of high school for over 3 years, I'm just now starting college with a major in chemistry. All I know is I hated high school and the giant social aspect that was associated with it, so I'm sorta worried it's gonna be the same in college. Don't get me wrong, I had friends and everything but I hated the countless group work we had to do in each class(which sucked if none of your friends were in the class) and the lame activities we'd have to do. Is college anything like that? Will I survive? I'm sad

It all depends on the size of the college. Basically, large school = anonymity, small school = everyone knows you (or at least your face).
I went to a college of roughly 1000 people, and I can count on one hand the number of group projects I had to do. Then again, I went to a private institution, so your results may vary.

It all depends on the teacher really...

If you are stuck doing groupwork, use it as a chance to improve your social skills. Females hate cowardice, just talk to people and be confident. Nobody's an asshole in college unless they're a mean drunk. Or me.
If you're looking to make friends/meet females you might wanna leave the imported games, consoles, etc. at home...selling out a little is outweighed by the benefit of having casual friends, who come in handy sometimes.
And there's really nothing to be afraid of, you should have a good time.
Be nice and be enjoyable to be around, you'll do ok.

Re: I start college tomorrow, help console me!!!
You still have group work in undergrad courses, but not as much. Mainly in language courses and such (and well, I suppose it depends on the college, university and individual professors!). I teach Linguistics at a University, but I don't burden my students with stuff like group work because I always hated it myself.steveovig wrote: Don't get me wrong, I had friends and everything but I hated the countless group work we had to do in each class(which sucked if none of your friends were in the class) and the lame activities we'd have to do. Anyway good luck at it. I'm sure it will be good for you in the long run.

Don't worry it is socially acceptable in college to hide in a corner of your room, with all your books, and never go to class except to take a test.
People will fear you of course. You will be the guy everyone hates to sit next to and you probably won't even get a fat chick to give you the time of day but college is about academics, right?

Might want to kiss your videogame hobby good-bye, otherwise it may interfere with your studies and social life. I learned that the hard way. Also, if you can balance school and games, you may want to leave the import stuff at home, otherwise your dork factor may increase. Maybe you should submit to the "poser" gamers and play their junk like Halo.
Get a good computer however, not only for the LAN parties that people may have, but just in case you need to do a report and the computer lab's computers suck or the lab is closed.
BUY YOUR BOOKS!!! There's no way you're gonna pass the classes without em'
Make sure that if you leave any consoles and games behind, that your mom is not going to sell them. (That happened to me, unfortunately).

Shmups: It's all about blowing stuff up!
Playing videogames doesn't have the stigma of Dungeons and Dragons or White Wolf roleplayers or Medieval Fair people(lol losers). I guess if you act all ashamed and stare at the ground, people are going to pass judgement. Otherwise, I doubt they'll care. I know this because I was in college when Ikaruga hit. Nobody judged me except to say "cool looking game" or "wow that looks hard." In the end it's just another hobby that makes up your personality. For example, sure I like old school games but I also enjoy long distance running, weight lifting, alternative politics, new games, and good novels. I don't live in my closet and shun people either.FatCobra wrote:Oh boy where to begun........

If people aren't mature enough to get past one little aspect of your personality than you probably don't want to hang out with them anyway. Even if they are a hot chick. There are plenty of hot chicks out there so don't let it get you down.
Oh yeah and Fat Cobra congrats on working Halo into one of your posts for the umpteenth time. Just sig it already dude.

Depends where you go, but doing chemistry dam I don't envy that even though its a vital part of my future profession, I'd hate to do chemistry at university.
Suppose its different for your americans this major and minor stuff, we just have degrees, masters and phds although there is standards within them.
Join a few societies theres about 20,000 students at my place, so your bound to meet a few people within the clubs your join you'll get along with.
My advice is: do your work when you get it! don't leave it to the nite before honestly thats half the battle just doing the work, time management is the other half. Don't structure university around your life, structure life around your university time.
Books wise: You only need a few, There are chemistry books that are basically all in one, cost a shit load but they are basically complete and you'll not have to buy another one for possibly a year.
Embrace the change don't fight it, think of it as a chance to start over, unfortunately you'll have to do stuff in groups like power point presentations in front of the faculty and work in the lab apart from that and lectures its pretty samey to what you'd expect.
Time for games will decrease.

Once you get pretty far into your major, you will be dealing with the same people in your classes all the time. Plus anyone who makes it for a few years is pretty dedicated to their work and is likely to not fuck around. If you are serious about school, then you will have lots of help from classmates who are just as serious as you; not like all those fuck-heads in high school who now work at McDonald's or Jiffy Lube.
Well, the reasoning is because I want to use as much free time as possible to study and that's it. I need to get into a good pharmacy school down the road.Strychnine wrote:Why?steveovig wrote:^^^That's fine by me, lol. I made it a point to not date much, if at all during school.

College is NOTHING like that; you'll have the time of your life!steveovig wrote:Even though I've been out of high school for over 3 years, I'm just now starting college with a major in chemistry. In terms of video games, only you can decide what you want to do with all that during college. I started college in the fall of '96, and had already sold my Genesis in '94. So, I pretty much missed out on the entire 64-bit era-other then watching dorm-mates down the hall from me play Madden '99, or playing some Tekken once. It was after I got out that I started getting into gaming again. Maybe you'll get lucky and your college will have an arcade! Mine did until the summer after my freshman year, at which point it was unfortunately removed.
But most of all-enjoy the time there, it won't last forever!

There are too many unknown variables to say how things will go, like the size of the school and the geographic region/surrounding city. The makeup of the student body can make a big difference too (what is your school known for? Engineering? Education? Football? Drinking?)
Having said that, I don't see chemistry being a major with a lot of group work, but I can't say that with too much certainty.
Also, will you be living on or off campus? Living on campus basically guarantees you'll have somebody to hang out with. Lots of people bitch about living in the dorms, but I think they were great. You get forced into a lot of conversations and relationships that wouldn't happen in high school because of the cliques. We actually had a conversation one night where we all agreed that none of us would have talked to each other at all had we gone to high school together. Although in your case they'd probably pretend to be your friend so you can buy them beer.
I'm also sure people have scared you about the difficulty. I didn't think it was that bad, and I enjoyed the fact that more emphasis is placed on exams instead of homework. In my experience, the people who have the most trouble adapting are the mildly intelligent kids who worked hard and kissed a lot of ass in high school.
There's also the time management issue. This can vary widely depending on your school, major, and employment status. All I know is that when I lived in the dorms and didn't have a job, I usually had an obscene amount of free time (and I fucking miss it!).
And good luck with pharmacy. That is one hell of a major.

Step It Up
But High School is a lot different than College, man; in college, nobody gives a fuck about the low-life assholes and troublemakers who were popular in High School. Most of them (the gangsters and prom queens) end up dead in a ditch somewhere, addicted to drugs, or working a dead-end job, so they never make it to college (even if they have a chance). And if they do happen to go to college, nobody really gives two shits about them or what they were in High School. In short, the "big fish in the small pond" aren't as big when they get to college. You still have your Samuel Adams drinkin' (and hurling) "roofies-BRO" frat-boys, but they're only one piece of the pie...
Believe in yourself. You can do it, and if someone tells you otherwise, punch them in the face. I hit rock-bottom in college my second year through, but I still made it even though the odds were against me. What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger...

Indeed. College resets everything. It's pretty much safe to say that the people who are there want to be there. Granted, there are always the jocks, slackers, etc. As BAD mentioned, High School ain't shit when you get out. There are those that hang on, wearing letterman jackets to class, but those people quickly drop that shit after a week or so. Unless they're idiots. Or football players.
*shrug*
Shame about not living on campus. It's something every student should experience.

Hey, I just started college too! I'm majoring in computer science, and will probably get a minor in mathematics. The whole "dorm life" thing is slightly overrated, however it's still pretty cool. And as far as classes go, as long as you keep your head together and set some time aside to study a bit (sacrificing some game time, of course), you should be alright.
Now just give me a couple weeks before my roommates have completely converted to shmup-lovers...

Heh you guys are going to be in for a rude awakening when you figure out there are such things as class presidents and the student councils in college. Those popular guys/girls you hated so much in high school? If they had decent grades, they'll be back in college. They might make a frat or sorority and remember that perfect job you wanted after college? With one frat/sorority story and a flash of the college ring, that job belongs to them.
Social cliques are still active in college but you have to work your ass off to join them. Do you want that ultra high paying engineering job straight out of college? Plan on making some nice grades, joining the IEEE(and attending a couple meetings), and dress nice for the social functions. You'll also have to talk up the recruiter and let him know that you are more than a nerd who lives in his closet, you are a go getter who thinks outside the box, a team player, and a born leader. All in one 5 min chat....good luck
You can be as much of a social outcast as you want in college. You'll get by and no one will mess with you. You can live inside your closet and no one will tell you to go outside. You can give up bathing and no one will dunk your head in a toilet. However all of this will just be enough to get you a degree. If that's enough for you being just "good enough," go for it.

It amazes me that this US college life actually exists outside of films.
Frat parties, evil jocks and bitchy prom queens
Over here it's just basically high school with the emphasis moved from education to shagging and drinking.
The social life in college is far better than any qualification you could walk out with, I met some of my best friends and best girlfriends in college and still keep in touch with almost everyone I knew back then.
It's not something to be scared of, but something to look forward to

lol, why would you be afraid to go to college? I'm in my 6th year and its the shit! Its hard not to make friends as every one for the most part is cool and its not like high school where everyone has their little groups. A death metal rocker and a metro could end up good friends half way through the semester cause nobody cares about that crap.

Yeah definetly agree people who are resonably able have the hardest time because they had to work soo hard back in high school and now they just can't take it, wheras the bright guys just have to get off thier ass to succeed.
Where'd you go to uni freddiebamboo?
I'm thinking of trying to start my own club next year going to call it '' The ''atheist social society'' hopefully meet more none religous zealots It'll have a motto like ''Religion, not in my backyard''
