XBOX and emulation, where should i get started?

Post by TVG »

ok, here's the deal, im thinking of modding my xbox and i want to know if its worth it.
few questions:

1) what do i need? will the modchip be enough or do i need an extra hard drive too?

2) what does the xbox emulate faithfully? not talking about fake/true low rez0rs, but speed, especially mame, is it acurate?

3) is it hard to get up to date emulators? (not roms) what are the best ones for arcade, snes, genesis?

4) is there any sites or tutorials i should read before getting started?

my choice of modding my xbox or not solely depends of this topic, so please people, be fair.

Ok, I just modded my xbox a few weeks ago se here's what I know

1. Excecter 3 modchip, fairly easy to install if you've got even basic soldering skils. I tried it with the non-solder adapter and couldn't get the fucker to work so ended up just soldering it.

After the install there will only be aout 4.5Gb left on the hard drive. Enough to run a few emulators with full rom sets so you'll probably want to get a bigger one.

2. I've only tried running MAME x so far which is very good except for some sound glitches. I've not tried it yet but from what a friend tells me, MAME ox is pretty much perfect.

3. I'm running Genesis, Snes and and Atari 2600 emulators at the moment, all of which are easily found. The Genesis emulation is pretty much perfect as is the snes emulation except for a few dodgy sound efecets.

There's a shitload more emulators which I havn't tried yet. these include - Atari Lynx, Atari ST, Commodore 64, MSX/MSX2/MSX2+, Neogeo CD, Neogeo/CPS1/CPS2, Nintendo 64, Gameboy Advance, NES, Master System/Game Gear, NeoGeo Pocket, Playstation, Spectrum, PC Engine, Wonderswan, X68000 and many, many more.

4. http://www.xbox-scene.com/ Huge forum and plenty of tutorials with everything you need to know.

MAMEoX works pretty good, whereas Final Burn Alpha suffors much control LAG!

Kawa-X plays Neo-Geo and Capcom CPS1-2 stuff really well. I dare say perfect?
I have some other ones for Atari 2600,NES,SNES,GENS,etc and they all work really well.

BTW: My XBOX doesn't have an extra hard drive...only "stock".

IN the land of Xbox emu you need only one IMO

FBA-XXX PRO

Runs 6 great cave shmups, all the cps2, and all the neo geo also alot of MISC shmups and beat em up games :) It is arcade bliss.

you can get the same thing for pc, with RGB, without filtering:

http://www.ultimarc.com/avgainf.html

Even most PC videocards have some form of TV out...

Plus the Xbox ones supposedly can't even run the Cave games fullspeed...

It's just something 'neat' to do if you have a ton of extra money and hate charities.

Yup this is the way to go, the last release runs everything I have tried at 59.56 sec Includes cave shooters and all neo games. no need for pro, just the latest fbaxxx build. and I get no inputlag that I could mesure, if its there its not making trouble.

(just to add that mame is not as good at keeping the framerate up so has auto skip, This can be bad on some games, On the plus side it runs around 45000 games,)

All 1029 arcade games came installed with my akira modchip. This is MAMEoX, and totally seperate from my SNES, N64 and Megadrive emulation.

Actually, I prefer MameDoX on Xbox..I think the latest version they got rid of screen tearing. As for the rest..

GBA/GBC/GB XBoyadvance ver. 1.7...this thing RAWKS!

For pretty much everything else, console wise, stick with all of Xport's emulators, they work the best overall. His Genesis emu plays Sega CD games from the drive, as well as 32X games..and his PC Engine emu plays PC Engine Cd rom games too, though..I cannot get Sapphire to work.

Kawa-X, if you can find the hacked versions, takes FBA to the cleaners when it comes to Neo and CPS2.. FBA-XXX is great, but it does have some microscopic lag, and it sometimes has issues with NEO GEO games. The Beta Release of FBA-XXX plays some Psikyo shooters, namely Strikers 1945, Gunbird and Tengai. The cool thing about FBA-XXX is that you can overclock the cpu and eliminate all of the slowdown in the Cave shooters.

Seriously....NOT XECTUER

Either the Xenium or the Smartxx chip surpassed Xecuter ages back

The Smartxx doesn't even need you to burn any discs, the ftp is already built in, you just transfer a dash over and your good to go

As someone who's played Cave games on the Xbox, I'll just say that they DO run full-speed, as do most other emulators. Of course, it depends on what emulators you use in the first place, just like anything else.

finally modded it, its cool, plays MP3 and media videos and shit, and the dude installed some old mameox version with some games to show me how it works, cool stuff.

the emu is ok...a lot of games dont work, im guessing its because its an old version, it made me discover in the hunt, which is good so far.
there's no way id stick with that emu tho, about half the games he installed (mostly anecdotal) dont work and some run pretty bad. plus you cant show FPS which sucks.

so here's the catch.

there is really NO way of downloading the emus (latest versions) other than via IRC? what the hell im fucked.
i dont even know what version this stupid mac is, tried installing some irc clients to no avail.
damn.

any effin link?

edit: fixed typo, i meant via irc, not mame, also when i found the description of an emu with updates and comments of the authors, it had this beautiful gem "where to get it: try IRC" as in, no server nor channel specified.
ok, cool. it may be there, or it may not, like the gurus, it will come when you're ready.
i mean, i know how asking shit to strangers on IRC goes. (!kb <usename> FUK U N00B!!!)

xport is probably the best site when it comes to emulation. If I can recall correctly, there's an ftp available via the irc channel.

#xbins would be the channel. You'll find more instructions there.

thanks guys, i found much stuff.

mamedox (found on a random googled site) works fine with many games, runs them perfectly, but every other game runs at 30FPS, like truxton, some games run at 55FPS with a very ugly screen distortion (twin cobra for example), other, newer games run at normal framerate with some periodical FPS chutes that makes them kinda unplayable (takumi games, air gallet, dimahoo and others)
cave games run kinda shitty at 58fps and a butt ugly screen distortion.
ovrall it runs many games but not every one perfectly.

FBAXXX is good (latest version downloaded from official forum), doesnt run much games cept neo geo and CPS, some newer other titles and all cave games that i downloaded. but those that it runs, it runs them perfectly, which is cool.
at first, everything slowed down, even dodonpachi, and runned shitty as long as i kept shooting.
but i changed the default engine to musashi68k and the CPU speed to 150 , now it runs very good.
sometimes i suspect even TOO good, is batrider really supposed to have (almost) ZERO slowdown in advance course?
wow this game is probably the best looking shmup ive seen, very good.
fbaxxx is cool but ill need mamedox to play the game it doesnt run (a whole lot)

anyway, still cant understand why truxton (among others) runs at 30fps and if there's something i can do, tried pretty much all mamedox options to no avail.

it seems most people that use the emus dont really care about anything else than CPS, neo geo and cave.

i could probably play a few years just with what i have now, but if i can make stuff perfect i want to make it :p

next ill try the genesis emulation i think.
by the way, the xbox is also aa cool divx player.
