I love reading the bullshit reasons as to why logos are chosen/designed as they are. Does anyone actually care? I've always thought companies can save millions by outsourcing logo designs to local schools. Get some kids to design your logo - it's free and will probably end up less bollocks!

I just hope MS aren't going to focus so much on tablet/phone with Win 8 that they forget about desktops. Not that I'll be upgrading anything until my Win 7 box creaks and dies, mind.

Yeah, it appears that Windows 8 is now officially the newest member of Scandinavia. One main benefit of the Windows logo since 3.1 has been that the logo can stand on its own. I'm not sure yet whether this logo will have the same appeal. It achieves simplicity at the cost of distinctiveness.

That said, the new baby blue color—cleverly unmentioned in the article—is a solid change that gives the viewer a subconscious impression that Windows is a bit artsy instead of the cold professionalism that people view it as today.

It's austere in design and the color of the lipstick that a supervillainess in a Magical Girl anime would wear. That's pretty cold if you ask me.

The older four-color design gave me a fuzzy feeling, but then again I still appreciate the semi-surreal businesslike / High News design (with tall serif, all-caps fonts) of the titles and Microsoft logo from the Windows 3.1 / NT era, and I remember having reservations about the change from the Win95 window logo to what came after.

If there's any silver lining, it's that the really lousy Windows XP default theme appears to be dead and buried for good.

I think the new logo it's an amazing piece of history! It's a Metro "idea" you feel that!!! I love the Metro philosphy! But, I think, also the Windows Phone logo is great!!

You are on the right way to make a real musterpiece. Even better than the so-call-great MacOS X!

Yeah, no kidding. Probably the first two dozen responses are from Microsoft MVPs (TM) and various people dragooned from around the PR offices to type "yeah! This useless ugly shit we spent shareholder money on to validate our paychecks is great!" I wonder how many of them had guns to their heads?

Ugh...it's like they took the most bland font they could possibly find and shoved a minimalist representation of the original logo next to it. It's so....bleah. Not that the logo matters one bit to me...but it's still a poor choice IMO.

New logo is really lame. Instead of seeming cleverly minimalist, it seems completely uninspired.
Bloody Windows 1.0 had a slicker logo than this, and that was about equally minimalistic.

Don't like the logo. Also don't like the new interface on Windows 8 from what I've seen but apparently that can be switched off to give you a normal desktop like previous Windows versions.

I've been using a Windows 98 style interface ever since XP...I might even have switched the icon set in ME to use 98 style icons, at that. I doubt they will ever mess with that, but if they do there will be hell to pay.

I looked but I'm not seeing it. You may be right, though; I'm no type designer. The W and the i are closer together than the other letters; according to Wikipedia, "tracking" is the whole-word spacing between letters, kerning is correcting for spacing between letters, and I think they did alright there, given a very austere font.
