Re: Movies you've just watched
Melancholia.
A movie about a planet called Melancholia which collides with Earth. Only 15-20% concentrates on the collision though. Its the preceding 24-48 hours of Kirsten Dunst life (getting married) that is the meat and potatoes of the movie. It has a very odd feel to it. Giving it one of those zoned out performances. If you like Stanley Kubrick you might like this. Out now on UK blu ray. USA gets it in March I believe.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Sucker Punch (2011) - 5.5/10
Re: Movies you've just watched
Watched Del Toro's Chronos last night. I think not so good as Devil's Backbone (still his best IMO) but a really enjoyable and rather modest flick. Almost worth the price of admission was the tour of Del Toro's 'Bleak House' (man cave ultimate!) included as a bonus feature.

A Serbian Film
Had this for a while but based on the reviews I had read I was saving it for a rainy day. I couldn't sleep last night so I threw it on. It was actually way better than I expected and not nearly as disturbing, other than a couple scenes. Definitely not for the squeemish, and I will warn, if you aren't ready for this, it is definitely one of those movies you can't un-watch, cuz it is gonna stay with you; but I enjoy that about these kind of films. Honestly, after watching this now, it seems a lot of the reviews I read were written by people who really aren't into this kind of thing, which begs the question, if you knew what it was going in, why did you watch it? If you are going to watch a movie that is all about extreme violence, necrophelia, pedophelia, etc, you can't really then turn around and complain that it was full of that stuff.
If you like watching stuff that pushes the threshold and dwells on things better left to dark basements and questionable morals, check this out, but I would not recommend watching this just to see if you can sit through it; you won't be doing yourself any favors.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Logan's Run is essential vintage sci-fi. Altered States is worth watching, esp if you're a William Hurt fan. Not amazing, but entertaining. Haven't even heard of the rest, save Valhalla Rising, which I've attempted to watch several times before nodding off. Looks good, though.circuitface wrote: Opinions on any of those? Lifeforce is Tobe Hooper, so I recommend.
Xtro is weird...full birth of a man and creepy imagery.
Contempt was that one guy...so I dunno. I am drunk, sorry.
Cherry 2000 is post-apoc, so go for it.
Kwaidan is a horror anthology, so yes.
The Company of Wolves is...okay. The FX is really good, but I remember hating it back in the day. I dunno, it kinda has this weird artsy horror vibe going for it that didn't work when I saw it.
I've got a mate that loves Picnic at Hanging Rock. Ive never seen it, but I've heard nothing but good.
Same goes with Repulsion...Roman Polansky is usually pretty good, but I never got a chance.

Surrogates (2011) - Better than the trailer made it look. Despite the apparent twists, it ends up exactly where you expect, which is a shame. Fun, nonetheless. 6/10.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I love Kagemusha - I watched it along with a ton of Kurosawa's more famous 50s/60s stuff some time ago, and enjoyed it just as much. Great dual performance by Takashi Nakadai (edit2: whoops! Tatsuya Nakadai...), and an engrossing story.
"Do not move. A mountain does not move!"
Have you seen Ran? It's the only other colour Kurosawa movie I've seen, another favourite of mine. A suitably intense take on King Lear, and the battle/siege scenes are stunning in both scale and ferocity. I need to check out the rest of his latter-day stuff at some point. Last time I got distracted by Toshiro Mifune's "Samurai Triology," which I ultimately didn't find as memorable as his films with Kurosawa.
edit: actually, damn... I didn't even finish his earlier catalogue on my last jaunt. Still have to see "The Idiot," "I Live In Fear" and "Ikiru."

Miyazaki overload at the Egyptian Theater in hollywood; watched Totoro on the big screen last night. I've probably seen Totoro far too many times, but seeing it (or any Miyazaki film) on the big screen is a whole different experience.

Yeah just the cold stare of him when he's pretending to be Shingen or wotever his name is is increidble - it also makes the occasional 'nervous laughing outbursts' among the Samurai even more intenseBIL wrote:I love Kagemusha - I watched it along with a ton of Kurosawa's more famous 50s/60s stuff some time ago, and enjoyed it just as much. I actually haven't seen Ran yet, it is definitely on my list though - I have the 3 'Samurai' films you mentioned, I might watch Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters again first though - or Shinsengumi - has anyone seen Shinsengumi?
I'm reading Turnbull's Samurai Warfare at the same time and also watching Rurouni Kenshin, so it's safe to say I'm in a kinda Bushido obsession at the moment :p

I do hope you guys' seen The Hidden Fortress by Kurosawa. It's awesome.
