God Bless America

Little things that annoy the hell out of you + gun
I'm not seeing anything else in that trailer. What makes it look so interesting/hilarious?

Re: God Bless America
Maybe this film has no apparent irony so that you can add it in at your end.
If it winked at the viewer and let them know it's aware of how stupid/terrible it is, you would watch it and be like "this film is stupid but knows that it is stupid, isn't that cool, it is OK to enjoy watching this and I do".
If it appears to be entirely straight and so pretty dumb and likely to appeal to exactly the wrong kind of people (the kind of people that would get murdered in the world of the film) you can enjoy it ironically, like "this film is totally straight and lacks any self awareness, that is terrible, but because I know it's terrible I can act like I enjoy it while really enjoying the fact that I don't really enjoy it and so look cool to the people also working on this level and can look down on the people who really do enjoy it (unironically) (but secretly I enjoy it for real a little bit because it's OK as long as you know it's not OK)". See how much more complicated that is?
Probably not though.

Re: God Bless America
I enjoyed the trailer. Mostly beause of the lack of the Voice of God™ feature plaguing other American movie trailers.
Also, liked it better that the Kenny Powers show for what it's worth.

Yeah, what do you call something that's presented as a parody, but it's not?evil_ash_xero wrote:After watching that trailer....it doesn't seem to have much "wink wink, nudge nudge" going on. So, it's a little creepy.

Back on topic. This looks like something I would have loved as a teenager. These days I find myself agreeing with Ruldra in that it just comes off as depressing.
Re: God Bless America
You guys should watch Heathers, Ghost World, Election, and Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia before you watch this one

Re: God Bless America
For anyone wanting to talk about this movie, sorry but im gonna drivel on about patriotism for a bit
I would guess that most British feel the same way, thats why we tend to pride ourselves our comedy exports. And how ive heard stories of British kids playing COD who look down on "stupid" Americans and think they are better because theyre British
Is Falling Down worth watching?
I think that as an Englishman Im not patriotic in a traditional sense, much has to do with successive UK governments that couldnt give a fuck about protecting the interests of the average joe on the street. That said my own version of pride / pratriotism is more to do with the people, Ie as a Yorkshireman I pride myself in the friendly & good nature of the folk around me. OFC there are dicks and yobs here like everywhere so I try not to let myself get blinded by it.Skykid wrote: Yeah, it did. I appreciate folks wanting their circumstances to improve, but I just don't get patriotism at all (or the link there, really.)
I don't give a fuck about the UK whatsoever. Never did.

Re: God Bless America
Heathers was fucking awesome but there is something strikingly American about it. I don't imagine the clicks of the late 80's early 90's to be the same in the UK, thus, making the movie not as relatable. Funny shit though.Skykid wrote:Except Heathers, do yourself a favour and don't go back to that one.louisg wrote:You guys should watch Heathers, Ghost World, Election, and Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia before you watch this one

Go back and watch it again, I did last year and it's considerably shit. The first 30 minutes are fucking awesome, after that it loses sense of its own plot and devolves into a retarded nonsensical mess that's neither poignant or humorous. There are plenty of 80's flicks that hold up way better.GaijinPunch wrote:Heathers was fucking awesome but there is something strikingly American about it. Alfredo Garcia is too good a movie to be mentioned so casually in this thread. Even if it's to slight a poorer movie, it's pearls before swine I say. Doesn't even belong in the same sentence with these other films unless their presence is intended as celluloid fodder.louisg wrote:You guys should watch Heathers, Ghost World, Election, and Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia before you watch this one

Haha. Well, Election I remember being pretty good. The others are OKish pissed-off-teenager flicks. But I agree: Bring Me the Head is amazing. Peckinpah is such a crazy misogynistic asshole but I love his movies.CMoon wrote:Alfredo Garcia is too good a movie to be mentioned so casually in this thread. Re: God Bless America
Wild Bunch is in my top ten, but I don't even know where to put Garcia. So fucking bitter and harrowing; it's Peckinpah's own personal vision quest talking to the head of a dead man, trying to sort it all out. Warren Oats is the TOTAL VEHICLE for this vision, "No one can loose all the time", only in Peckinpah's universe this is not just possible, it is inevitable, and Garcia is the poetry of losing everything. I want to say there's some redemption in there, but that's the bullshit interpretations of wildbunch that Pike's gang need redemption, but there's no redemption in it. The Warren Oats character in Garcia's head doesn't need to find himself or come into his own; he's just another rat to make it big time. Watch the rat dance!drauch wrote:Yeah, Peckinpah is the mang.CMoon wrote:Alfredo Garcia is too good a movie to be mentioned so casually in this thread. I see where Skykid's description is fitting: it starts off as one movie and derails into a totally different movie by the end. I think Miike Takashi would be proud to have made that movie (a la Dead Or Alive)

Re: God Bless America
Or: It starts off with an intriguing hook with an edgy sense of rebelliousness and controversy, and then begins to run out of both script and credibility when people begin to get offed with reckless abandon provoking completely unrealistic character actions from both its leads.xbl0x180 wrote: Heathers is the only one I really liked.

It doesn't know whether it's satire, farce, drama or comedy, so ends up being an awkward mixed bag of everything that leaves you feeling grossly dissatisfied by the end at the lack of any real point or resolution, and that you probably just blew 2 hours of your life on some crap that all your stupid teenage friends told you was a "reely good movie", and is "reely deep and meeningfull."
And so on.
