Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
No sorry I dont.
I am looking at picking up a Master System & nes at some point so I will try it out then I guess.

Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
This is the exact point.... some people expect too much for a £25-£50 scaler!!
You want to look at the utter shite that people like Maplins and CYP sell as scalers. Utter utter wank for video gaming and these things can cost over four times the price of the GBS!
For a device that is readily available and when accompanied with a Sync Strike, will accept a multitude of inputs, it's a bloody good bit of kit that performs much better than most TV scalers.......... and let's you use a SLG3000 as well.
It has it's caveats for sure, but come on..... you're not going to get a DVDO EDGE, XRGB-3 etc etc for £50. In fact your not going to get one for four times that price..... second hand!.

Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
That will add scanlines via rgb to the back of the tv no?
Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
Will it **** as like!

Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
That's what says on the site. Scanlines via rgb

Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
Trust me.... it does not do what the SLG3000 does.
Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
I just got one of these scalers yesterday. I'm gonna build a supergun with this built inside, will the AUTO setting need attention from time to time, or do I just setup the output resolution once and accept whatever comes out of it? Also, is there any heat buildup I have to worry about? I'm not going to run this inside a hot cabinet, mind.

Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
I found another weird issue with the scaler. If I set the VSize from 13 to 0 and back to 13 each time I start a game, the picture looks way clearer. The picture quality is really nice (for the price) but having to do it every time is a bit annoying.
Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
Maybe... maybe not. AUTO is normally the easiest way to sort out any "dicky" sync issue.emphatic wrote:I'm gonna build a supergun with this built inside, will the AUTO setting need attention from time to time
Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
I also bought one of these for my jamma test rig. Don't expect it to sync with any PCB that outputs < 60hz (i.e. seibu, and most older games, etc). There is a heat sync on the SMT chip, but I don't recall if it got really hot or not. Oh, and I think one poster in here mentioned, make sure the power supply to the converter is the same +5 (or is it +12?) that is powering your PCB or you will have additional sync problems due to ground mismatch with external walwart power.emphatic wrote:I just got one of these scalers yesterday. Going to resurrect my old thread...
Anyone know where I can obtain the red/white 2-pin cable?

Look into people who supply parts for radio controlled vehicle hobbyists.mrkotfw wrote:Going to resurrect my old thread...

I spent a very long time trying to get the part that plugs into the extension port on the device and it's a similar molex. I found it from those people and I had to do stuff like comparing them visually. I don't rightly know the specific part name either, because they call them different things.

Thanks. Yeah, good idea. I'll start looking there...Retro Access wrote:Look into people who supply parts for radio controlled vehicle hobbyists.mrkotfw wrote:Going to resurrect my old thread...

I did look and found one, but it was much too small.
More suggestions are welcomed!

Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
Sync Strike just turned up - thought I would give it a quick blast. I will try it out further when the coast is clear (kids in bed)
First off it seems the screen has stopped jumping around the place. phewwww!
Pal PS2, Main screen still a little crackerly (but not jumping). I inserted Jap God of War, Playstation 2 logo flashes on, then blank screen just sound, sync message at the top. oh well
I will try NTSC SNES & Pal 50/60hz Megadrive later on tonight

Does sync strike use the EL1883? I was wondering this as it has RGBHV out so I hear, I use this IC myself and had good results with it.Beaps wrote:Sync Strike just turned up - thought I would give it a quick blast. I will try it out further when the coast is clear (kids in bed)

Rigth just so I understand (which has probably been asked and you have already answered lol):Beaps wrote:Sync Strike just turned up - thought I would give it a quick blast. I will try it out further when the coast is clear (kids in bed)

How are you managing to play a JAP game on a PAL PS2?
Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
Fat ps2, messiah modchip, official playstation 1 Sony grey rgb scart.
Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
You need to find out what that chip is doing to the output signal imo..... you should really be outputting 60hz NTSC. This could be your problem with the scaler, trying to work with a PAL 50hz console with a NTSC 60hz game. Hence why you get no picture after the menu. IIRC I think I had the same problem with mine until I switched the output to NTSC within the chip bios.Beaps wrote:Fat ps2, messiah modchip, official playstation 1 Sony grey rgb scart.
Don't ask me how you get into your bios! It will be a different chip to mine (I have a slim and the latest modchip that was bought out at the time), so you'll need to check the internet for info.
Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
I also got a slim pal ps2 that's not chipped. Let me try that and I'll report back

Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
Would be interested to hear more about the PS2 myself, given the loss of sync I get on certain screens, all unimportant screens during loading.
I never owned a PAL PS2 though and I'm working with Japanese and US systems.

Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
Just tried my pal ps2 with street fight antholog.
If I select 60hz I get screen sync message so I can only run 50hz. The game runs terrible also like it's missing a few frames.

Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
That will be the 50 to 60hz conversion issue I mentioned previously then.
Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
What is the HD box pro converter like?
Is it just the cgavga in a box or is it something different.
Could I use my sync strike with that?

Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
Can't handle 240p IIRC.Beaps wrote:What is the HD box pro converter like?

Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
Which one can handle 240 IIRC then?
Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
I'm pretty sure that my HD Box Pro could handle 240p before it died. Picture Quality wasn't that good though, just like the GBS-8220.
Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
It can handle 240p correctly.
That's part of the benefit of the motion adaptive deinterlacing facility.... it's the GBS that doesn't have this feature, which in reality only causes a problem with things like 30khz drop shadows. When used with the SLG I would argue that this is then masked to a large degree.
Beaps,
It won't sort your problem, plus the HDBOX Pro is Component only.
PAL consoles cause all sorts of shit with this stuff. Either grab your nuts and get NTSC consoles or grab your nuts again and buy a proper processor.

Re: Issues with CGA2VGA scaler
The HDBoxPro can handle 240p because you can DISABLE the motion adaptive deinterlacing by adjusting the motion sensitivity. With the slider set to the max (or was it min?) the HDBox switches to a field based deinterlacing mode which happens to be a a single-frame mode for 240p content. That's part of the benefit of the motion adaptive deinterlacing facility
