Dodonpachi round 2 start mod (and high scores)

Post by nimitz »

While Dodonpachi is a great game, the first half of the first round can get really boring for "good" players, and clearing the whole 2 rounds takes something like 45 minutes, so I decided to make a version which fixes both problems, that is the game begins at 2-1 instead of 1-1

How to use
This is actually a mame cheat, so you have to make sure cheats are enabled (cheat 1 in mame.ini) then all you have to do is start normally then on the title screen (see picture) just turn on the cheat (press tab, select cheats, turn on round 2start)and play the game normally

Download here: http://bit.ly/yfAUfq
just put that file in your main mame directory

this cheat is the "newer" format so it will work with any mame version after 126, i also have a way to make it work with older mame version, just ask if you want that one (i think most people use newer mame version by now)

2 nimitz 26,918,800 C-S 5 216
3 moozooh 24,127,490 C-S? 5 165

Hey, that's cool! It's also useful for people like me who suck yet want to see what the 2nd loop is all about :)

Among all the bitching, trolling, idiotic fights, etcetc. that make up large parts of this forum this is a refreshingly useful post. Thanks a bunch man, will try it out as soon as I have some time to spare.

Wow, this is a great contribution. Guess I'll finally get to test out the second loop for myself.

I'm not sure what other games run smoothly on MAME and have second loops, but do you think it would be possible to create cheats that do this for other games using the same method you used for this?
So, are we expected to turn our TV on its side?!

Yes, this is theoretically possible to do with any looping game in mame, Ketsui Ura loop does come to mind.

edit: just put the zipped cheat file in the main mame folder

Sorry, I'm not too great with mame. Do I drop the 'cheat' folder in the mame root with all the other folders, or somewhere specific? Also, do I unarchive or use the zip, or is it just the xml files I need to place?

Thanks for the help.

I'm using SDLMame if that helps?

No need to unarchive, just drop the zip in the same folder as mame.

Thanks for the reply Naut. I dropped it into the folder with SDLmame unarchived but it doesn't take effect when I start the game, it just begins as normal. Is it a problem that I'm using Mametunes?

Thanks for the help.

You need to activate the cheat every time you launch the game by doing the thing mentioned in the first post. If the cheat menu looks different, then your Mame version is probably too old. It works with Shmupmame 2.2 at least.

Thanks Erppo. I'm absolutely rubbish with mame. I always end up spending forever fiddling with things like this. I have no mame.ini for some reason (spent forever looking for it and googling it's location  ) but I eventually found an option in Mametunes preferences, sdlmame, page 2... - probably where I should have looked in the first place - that allowed me to toggle cheats on.

All go! I'm off to give it a go and see how far I can get. :)

Oh shit this is awesome. I can't enable autofire with the C key though, which is kind of a bummer.

This shit is positively crazy. Great training, though! Thanks a lot, nimitz.

moozooh - 24,127,490 - C-S - 5 - 165

Second loop pretty much chains itself, but it's really hard to keep this chain going and not to bomb or die all the time. Hats off to people who can make it to 2-6—I consider 2-5 a hell already.

Can we get one for the older MAME builds?

Besides that, sounds great. Would definitely like to see it done for other games too. :D

This would make a pretty good practice tool, if you actually started "the loop" at full power. But thanks anyway.

Surely it wouldn't be too hard to create a second, separate cheat for full power (easier than making the one to start on loop 2 anyway)? I have no idea how MAME cheats are made, but I assume you just watch RAM values change and go about it in a Gamesharky kind of way.

Yeah, starting at full power would indeed make it more like an actual "loop" run, but then I would also have to modify the rank otherwise it would be easier.

If you want actual loop 2 practice the way to do it is save-stating a run.

This is more of a twist on the original DDP to allow for competition on a harder part of the game.

It is bloody difficult at base power. The restartitis is killing me.

Feel free to throw some meths out there if you like, I haven't been back to it since I posted the above score but I do enjoy it.
Basically if I didn't no miss stage 1 or combo at least up to the mid-boss I usually restarted, so I can do it - but hints are always welcome if it makes things easier.

I think that, in order to better gauge your position and how I should advise you, it would be advantageous to hear what your strategies are. (Read: try writing some advice for someone who's about to try another attempt after having just ended a sloppy run on the stage 1 boss...)
