Best cheap scaler for 240p?
Is there any s-video to vga converter that doesn't try to deinterlace 240p? One that doesn't try to combine frames and have that ghosting effect. And reasonably priced so 60$/40£ or less. Thanks a lot
Re: Best cheap scaler for 240p?
For £40 I think you may struggle to find a linedoubler that recognises 240p correctly via s-vhs!
Keep a look on eBay.... every now and then you will see Cinemateq Picture Optimizers for sale. These will do exactly what you need and also have the added benefit of Video, RGB SCART, component along with S-VHS input.
I picked up two of these last year I think for around £60-£70 each.

Thanks a lot fagin! I'm surprised it has all those inputs. Seems like the ideal machine for me. This will output 480p for use of a SLG? And do you set the resolution, or is it always double the original?
Re: Best cheap scaler for 240p?
It depends which CPO you get.... Not all of them work directly with the SLG. The sync polarity needs changing.

Just bought a Picture Optimizer for $65! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cinemateq-Pictu ... 5ae4762935fagin wrote:It depends which CPO you get.... Not all of them work directly with the SLG. The sync polarity needs changing.
The T-SLG has a sync polarity switch and I'm thinking should work with either polarity, see post 485

I'll post results here
Re: Best cheap scaler for 240p?
please do ! And nice find on the Cinemateq - they are so rare in the USA. I wonder how it got into the States in the first place

Re: Best cheap scaler for 240p?
I really hope you have a remote control with that CPO. There is no mention of it in the advert and the unit is TOTALLY useless without it.rendermatt wrote:Just bought a Picture Optimizer for $65! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cinemateq-Pictu ... 5ae4762935fagin wrote:It depends which CPO you get.... Thanks fudoh
I hope so!! Maybe a universal remote would work with itfagin wrote:I really hope you have a remote control with that CPO. There is no mention of it in the advert and the unit is TOTALLY useless without it.

Have you asked the seller?rendermatt wrote: I hope so!! Maybe a universal remote would work with it
Nope... the remote is unique to the CPO.
Fingers crossed for you.

Re: Best cheap scaler for 240p?
Yeah they just responded, no remote
Found out that the POP and POPII both use the RC-5 0x15 IR remote protocol and the SAME codes for all functions.
POP codes http://www.cinemateq.de/uploads/43.pdf
POPII codes (p.52 of pdf) http://www.cinemateq.de/uploads/245.pdf
So its likely the PO may use those too. Or did you mean that a POPI or POPII remote will not work a PO? Emailed cinemateq, if I can't get a remote through them I'll have to try these codes..my friend did an IR remote project like this once so I don't think its too hard. I've gotten myself in a mess here but thats all part of the fun right?

Re: Best cheap scaler for 240p?
I'm pretty sure that all Cinemateqs use the same IR commands. If you can't find a cheap one, just have somebody with a Cinemateq processor (e.g. Fagin
) get a $10 programmable remote, learn the codes from the original one and have it shipped over. Definitely the cheapest way.

Re: Best cheap scaler for 240p?
That's shit news.
The remote will work with all PO & POP's as far as I know. I have the CPO and the CPOPII. They both use the same remote.
I did see a remote on eBay some time back..... it was going for more than a complete unit. lol
Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Re: Best cheap scaler for 240p?
Thanks for the help. So if you have the PO turned on, unplug it, and plug it back in, it will be turned off?
Cinemateq offered the remote for 87£ total, going to look into other options first haha

Re: Best cheap scaler for 240p?
Would the one rendermatt linked work with the SLG3000? It outputs RGB HV / RGBS / RGsB / YUV, so even if it doesn't work directly I could use the GBS-8220 to transform the signal without quality loss, right?fagin wrote:It depends which CPO you get.... Re: Best cheap scaler for 240p?
No it will not work with the SLG3000 without a polarity invertor.blizzz wrote:Would the one rendermatt linked work with the SLG3000? The CPO will do a much better job of linedoubling the image than a GBS-8220 will.
Re: Best cheap scaler for 240p?
I meant putting the RGBHV output of the CPO into the GBS-8220. As it's 480p in and 480p out it shouldn't do anything to the quality. Or would it be better to buy/build a polarity inverter (no idea how much they cost).
Or would it be best to buy a different linedoubler? I'm looking for a Vigatec FX2 or CPO Plus II, but those are harder to find.

Re: Best cheap scaler for 240p?
Pass-thru is not to be trusted and I would be amazed if the quality of not effected. Since it's pass-thru you may even find the polarity going out will be the same as the input.blizzz wrote:I meant putting the RGBHV output of the CPO into the GBS-8220. It's very easy to build a circuit (although I did struggle, but found out why that's OK for use with the CPO) or you can buy something like a Extron RGB Interface, as these will allow you to alter polarity by the flick of a dip switch. The Extron RGB Interfaces can be found for as little as £25 off eBay.
Re: Best cheap scaler for 240p?
CPOPII has the inbuilt facility to invert the polarity.

Thanks for your help. I'll see what I can find on eBay.

Re: Best cheap scaler for 240p?
Personally I don't think it's a solution to the scanlines..... it has no variable density, which I feel is very important.
It appears to resolve the polarity issue though.

Re: Best cheap scaler for 240p?
Oh, you know it has a wide scanlines mode and a "RGB shield" (his way of adjusting brightness and color of scanlines) right?
http://godlikecontrols.com/images/shield.jpg
Not sure if his latest version will come with one, if it doesn't I'd just wire potentiometers to the jumpers next to the female VGA port. But of course thats not a solution if someone wants variable density out of the box

Re: Best cheap scaler for 240p?
Would an Extron Professional RGB 202xi (Manual) do the job?fagin wrote:It's very easy to build a circuit (although I did struggle, but found out why that's OK for use with the CPO) or you can buy something like a Extron RGB Interface, as these will allow you to alter polarity by the flick of a dip switch. From what I get you can only force the sync with an internal jumper to -/-, but that seems to be what the SLG3000 needs. Just want an informed confirmation

Re: Best cheap scaler for 240p?
The PSU outputs DC, not AC, right ? There is no frequency in the DC output, just in the AC input, so don't worry.

Re: Best cheap scaler for 240p?
Didn't come with a PSU, the device says "12 V AC 50hz" but in the POPII manual there is a picture of a PSU that outputs DC. Wtf Germany?
