eXceed Series

Post by GenkiPatton »

Hey all,

I haven't seen mention of this on the Shmups board, so thought I'd throw in some shameless self-promotion.

Nyu Media just announced the release timing and pricing for all 3 installments (latest versions) of the eXceed series, which will be arriving on Steam and other major digital distros this very month.
The games and prices are:

eXceed - Gun Bullet Children ($2.99) - http://exceedseries.com/exceed-gbc_main
eXceed 2nd - Vampire REX ($5.99) - http://exceedseries.com/2nd-vampire-rex
eXceed 3rd - Jade Penetrate Black Package ($5.99) - http://exceedseries.com/exceed-3rd-jade ... -package-2
The eXceed Collection (all three of the above in one bundle - $9.99) - http://exceedseries.com/the-exceed-collection

For details & to download the eX2nd demo, please see the eXceed site at http://www.exceedseries.com/ or the Nyu Media HP at: http://www.nyu-media.com/

Also, please feel free to drop in on the Nyu Media forum at: http://www.nyu-media.com/forum/

Thanks!

Cool stuff, I'll probably be picking these up. The third game in particular looks really nice.

Not much to say except that eXceed 3rd has an awesome metal soundtrack. I'd put it on par with Lords of Thunder with the amount of metal.. :D

Thx for bringing these games to steam, I wish you every success.

Yeah I love a Black Package! (im sorry I just had to make that joke)

Its kind of a touhou but with much better stage play. Has cutscenes and autobombs, both can be turned off.

I like its mix of proximity based weapon plus a super weapon thats charged by bullet grazing. Scoring is mostly based around speed kills which has a slowly growing or decreasing multiplyer. EDIT Has an hidden extra stage

The second one is a very fun take on the Ikaruga shielding mechanic and can get pretty brutal (playing on Easy means your rank will eventually go up until you die, and it'll always be hard if you start on higher difficulties). You might like it since you can stomach bullet cancelling :P

Hmm, will the non-Black Package version of eXceed 3rd be available?

Not just that, the chaining on REX is MUCH more lenient than the strict-as-shit chaining of, say, Ikaruga or DoDonPachi. I found it to be a bit more flexible at times. Plus the game, while brutal as mentioned, allows for rank control by sacrificing lives to keep it low at certain moments.

Of course you can go for eXceed mode, a high dose of LSD and rock on. :P

No, but there is a lot of Jade Penetrate. :P

Black Package is a remake of eXceed 3rd Jade Penetrate (like that, alone), with improved performance and graphics. It came out last year during Comiket IIRC. The original came out a year earlier or so, I can't remember. I think the scoring systems are different too?

Oh Christ with exceed 3rd BP coming to steam means everybody will be reading my crappy review I wrote a while ago. I dunno whats more embarrasing, my writing or the gameplay video I made when I was suffering from eye strain

Did you try the games in a notebook? For some reason, the games work perfect in notebooks. Bear in mind there is a fair share of intentional slowdown on eXceed 3rd. (Bosses explosions, that last pattern of the final mid-boss on stage 3 and a couple more)

Yes, also hoping this will go well!

I loved eXceed 2nd, and I'm more than willing to buy the Translated versions of all three games so that I can understand the story, even though I know the stories already... But I want to know more.

I haven't (only a dual core desktop) but the game was running at like 30 fps the entire time almost (i assume its supposed to run 60 usually).

By any chance, do you have an AMD CPU? An Athlon X2 or something like that? I've had the exact same issue whereas on every intel comp I have at home (another 3 PCs), it ran just fine. Maybe we can isolate a problem to certain CPUs/models. Can't be the video card it seems. (I have a GeForce GT220)

Intel Pentium Dual Core (2.4ghz). Obviously not great but should run the game fine. My video card (gts450) shouldn't be the problem.

My experience:
It runs fine on an AMD Athlon 64 desktop with an ATI Radeon X800XL.
It crashes the display driver and requires a hard system restart on my Thinkpad with a mobile Core 2 Duo and Intel GMA X3100.

lol, I bet we'll give Tennen-Sozai a heart attack.

So, yep, I'm starting to assume it's not the video card. There must be something that is present in desktop computers (and not in most notebooks) that is causing this FPS lock problem for some configurations. I remember having similar problems with another shooter, exception where I had to turn off some options in the video card (so that's why I still have my doubts and could be something enabled there that's messing things up) to get it full 60 fps.

I don't know if anyone remembers but RefleX by Siter Skain also had huge framerate problems and they posted a link to some Nvidia drivers that made the game run back to its former glory.

I'll get GBC for sure since it's the only one I am unable to get (even though I would prefer owning the original), and while I already have eX2nd and 3rd, I'll most likely get them again just to show support to NYU. It's kind of funny seeing NYU on these boards considering I talked with them on the Steam forums for Gun Bullet Children lol.

VAMPIRE REX remains my favorite in the series though, as well as one of my favorite shmups out there.

EDIT: For the sake of some of you guys up there, I have an AMD Phenom II x4 and an ATI Radeon HD5850. eXceed3rd BP used to crash after 5 minutes or so of gameplay with CCC 10.11 I think (or somewhere around that) on Win7 64x, and that's the only problem I've ever had with it. I know it will obviously run smoothly on my PC, but it may help you to corner more specific models that could cause some issues. It runs a bit slow under Wine in Ubuntu, but that's to be expected.

The Japanese version of eXceed3rd: JPBP ran fine on my computer (Core i7 920, Radeon HD4890) in all regards except for the final pattern of the Extra Stage boss, which slowed my framerate down to about 5. I remember seeing Japanese players reporting various framerate issues on Tennen-Sozai's Support BBS, back when it was still online, but a fix was never issued.

EDIT: To clarify, it's not just the framerate that slows down for me during that final pattern, but the music and Pause menu (Return/Retry/Exit) as well.

Every doujin game I have tried runs great on my AMD A-series laptop. Very rare for there to be any slow down unless it seems intentional.

Quad core, but only 1.5GHz. I am able to overclock it to 2.4GHz with zero issues if needed. But those cases are rare. I typically keep it at 1.5GHz or below and undervolt. Radeon 6620G is great considering the price of the laptop.

Intel blows AMD laptops out of the water with CPU power, but AMD blows Intel out of the water with integrated GPU power... Although the Ivy Bridge Intel machines may change that. Looking forward to a new computer this year. :D

Wow, this is cool.

I shouldn't be demanding this, but I really do think you should at least try to get the original Vampire up there, if not the old JP as well.

You ARE getting the original. GBC is published as a japanese import. It's all in japanese, yup.

0o sweet :] hmm wonder if I should cancel my special request for it then, or if I absolutely want a physical copy of it.

And yeah, totally missed that last bullet on the page "Authentic Japanese import version", to top it off, Genki did tell me on Steam that they were checking to release it as an import due to complications.
