OK what's worthwhile on iOS?

Post by Deca »

I'm picking up my iphone tomorrow, switching over from android. Just wondering what games are worth looking at since wading through the endless piles of crap seems like an uphill battle. Obviously I know about the cave games and some other shooters, but what's worth my time outside of that?

Ain't just sayin' it just because. This is seriously worth $1 (and you get to compete with lots of the forum, which is a bonus. :o )

You really want to know? The list is pretty big, you know.
Here's what I have installed currently on my iPhone 4 16GB, all good stuff. Games I particularly happen to wholeheartedly recommend, I've colored in orange.

Cave:
Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu / Dodonpachi Resurrection
Espgaluda 2
Deathsmiles
Mushihimesama / Bug Princess
Mushihimesama Bug Panic!

Llamasoft:
Minotaur Rescue
Minotron
Deflex
GoatUp!
Caverns of Minos

Other shmups:
Rayforce
Space Tripper

RPGs:
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy Tactics
Sword of Fargoal
Sword and Sworcery EP

Puzzle:
Puzzlejuice
Zombie Minesweeper
Scribblenauts Remix

Arcadey:
Osmos
Flight Control
Kosmo Spin
Tiny Wings
Forget Me Not
Fruit Ninja
Pac-Man Championship Edition
Solipskier
Canabalt

Super Crate Box
Time Ducks
Blade Dash

Mr. Oops!!

Other:
Sonic CD
Sonic Spinball

By the way, I have 360+ apps total in my iTunes library, games and everything else. A lot of stuff goes on sale or free on occasion, so picking up an app like AppShopper, or for gamers especially, checking out a site like http://toucharcade.com/ will keep you up to date on special offers.

Dotemu has some arcade game ports (R-Type, EDF), although the touchscreen controls are arse esp. compared to the cave shooters...

I'd recommend Steins;Gate, which is a time travel based visual novel. Great game. I don't actually own an iPhone or any iDevice (this is what people call them, right?), but it's a great game and really has no competition in the genre.

There's an English patch floating around out there too, I don't know if it's actually any good though.

The iOS port of Ghost Trick has finally come out in English. For some reason Capcom is doing absolutely nothing to promote it, but it's a full DS game for $10!

Woah, didn't know that. Always meant to give it a shot, I'll check that out.

And Deca, for the love of god, Groove Coaster from Taito is fantastic. Even if you don't care for rhythm action, it's the perfect marriage of software/hardware and gloriously fun.

Does anyone know how much space the full version of Ghost Trick takes up? The trial version is 340Mb, and you unlock additional chapters using that.

Slightly OT: How the hell do you drop the headphones into the fish tank? The game is great, but repeating that scene ten times is tiring. I keep trying to whack her legs with the cupboard door when she's juggling them, but it doesn't do anything. And the umbrella seems useless too.

Help meee.

I've really enjoyed Zen Pinball, the free table is allot if fun, and the new one coming up looks good. Bejewelled is fun as hell for a buck. I think it was a couple dollars, but Ifinity Field was a great twin stick shooter similar to Geomwars, and played very smoothly.
Keep up the suggestions, I want more games also! My phone has quickly become one of my all time favorite handhelds ever.

It's actually 533MB when installed, and the rest of the chapters are already downloaded as part of that.

You need to use the umbrella, not the cupboard door. Watch the position of the headphones carefully.

Also, I will second the Groove Coaster and Zen Pinball recommendations. Two of the most-played games on my phone, aside from the shmups.

I had heard of this game before when it was on DS, but forgot about it in a rush of other games. Thanks for alerting me to the iOS version. Purchased!

Thanks for all the suggestions! Just got my phone today and the first thing I grabbed for it was Mushihimesama. Was thinking about Ghost Trick but I'm not sure if I should play it here or on DS, it's something I'd wanted to play since before its release and still haven't gotten around to. I'll definitely be checking out everything mentioned, feel free to keep them coming!

Was planning to check that out, I'm actually pretty extensively involved in bemani :p

Chess With Friends. Currently have a very heated game going against an old friend who is navigating a ferry or something like that. Very nice way of keeping in contact with old friends.

"Game Dev Story" by Kairosoft is definitely one of my favourite games on iOS. Kairosoft have released quite alot of their simulation management games now on iOS, however Game Dev Story is probally their best release.

Zen Pinball is good stuff. It doesn't run as smooth as the 360 Pinball FX 2 on iPad one, but it still plays very well and looks good considering the inferior hardware. Last I checked, Bejeweled Blitz by itself is free and I think it's included with the new app. I like the new version of Blitz much better than the old one. I also have Infinity Field and I'm loving it so far. I like the control better than the official Geometery Wars 2 port and it stands well on its own.

It's an older app, but Star Trigon is quite a bit of fun. Very fun puzzlish game where you make triangles by hopping between circular planets. No control over than just touching the screen when the rotating character needs to jump. I heard it crashes on some devices, but it works fine on my iPad1 with OS version 5.0.1

There's also the DDR and jukebeat apps, but I assume you'd know better than me as to whether those are any good.

And speaking of Bemani, that reminds me to mention Cytus, which is clearly heavily Bemani-inspired. It's much more lenient with the timing, though, so I'm not sure if the primary appeal is to those of us who are really bad at these things... However, the music selection is definitely up to a certain standard, and apparently new songs in the future will be free updates.

Space Deadbeef is a free iOS shmup with lock-on missiles that I believe was made by one of the Panzer Dragoon developers. It came out very early, so it should work on any version.

Yeah I grabbed the lite version to test it out and it really doesn't work that well on iphone. It's a shame because it's a lot of fun on my friends ipad, works great on that size screen.
