What is the best output for PS2?

Post by Rock Man »

Assuming your TV lacks SCART input.

SCART RGB via VGA (XRGB-3) or Component Video (raw)

Which one is objectively better?

I would think that RGB to VGA should be better, as component still compresses the data?

I'm sure Fudoh will know.

depends on the game's output resolution (240p, 480i, 480p) as well as on the type of game (slow RPG or stragey, fast action/shmup).

240p -> XRGB in B1 or B0
480p -> XRGB in B1 or B0
480i with fast action/shmup game -> XRGB in B1 (never! in B0)
480i with slow RPG -> eventually depends on your taste and how good your TV can handle 480i.

Good lookin' on the rundown Fudoh! I believe Component would do best in a 720p-1080i situation, too bad I don't have any games that supports such res. Think I'll go with RGB it seems adept at every situation and the signal is uncompressed. Mondo props Fudoh you know your stuff!

If any one else has more to contribute your more than welcome to drop your two cents. I'm interested about the consensus. So far the results are as expected.

as usual these two rules apply:

a) an external processing solution will give better results than your TV's internal processor
b) the XRGB is hardly suited for 480i processing

If you plan on playing plenty of PS2 titles, you should add another processor for 480i deinterlacing.

Do you mean the XRGB3 or XRGBMini?

Rock Man's XRGB-3. The Mini is great for 480i.

You're right. I'll look into them, one day I plan on buying the DVDOEdge.
