I need help with Photoshop

Post by Specineff »

Got a cheap copy of the Photoshops to edit some sprites for a side project, and some of them need recoloring. This is what I need help figuring out, so I don't have to pull out the bucket or pencil tool in order to change the colors almost on a pixel-by-pixel basis:

Imagine a sprite in red, with a yellow outline and blue boots. I need to be able to change the yellow, and only the yellow outline (it's the same shade all over the sheet) to purple all over the sprite sheet. Is there a way to tell Photoshop to change the RGB values for that specific shade of yellow into the purple I want, assuming I have the right RGB values? Same with the blue boots being changed to green, and such.

If not, can programs like GIMP or Paint.net do this?

Thanks for any help.

I'd do this:
1. go to Image menu
2. select Adjustments
3. select Replace color...
4. you'll see a box with black/white representation of your image
5. in that box, click on an area you know is yellow
6. on the bottom is a color mixer/palette thing. use that to select the new color (purple)
7. hit Ok
= color replaced.

Another way:
1. go to Select menu
2. choose Color range ...
3. you'll see a box with black/white representation of your image
4. in that box, click on an area you know is yellow. (if the yellow has variation, set more fuzziness until all the desired areas are marked)
5. hit Ok
6. now you should have all the areas with that particular yellow selected
7. choose the pencil tool, set its size to something big, go to palette, select purple
8. paint all over the selection
Before Pope John Paul died he decreed that Aliens were also GOD's creatures and we should treat them with respect.

I assume your sprite has a limited palette. The following only works if each of your shades is unique.

- select the "magic wand" tool with tolerance set to 0, so you only select the one shade of yellow you want to replace
- click on one of the yellow areas to select all pixels of the same shade
- click on foreground colour and enter the desired RGB values
- press shift+F5 to fill the selected area with the foreground colour
- deselect
- done

Protip: If you're creating the sprite, and you have some idea of what might change on it's own later, give it it's own layer. So, you could have like 10 layers for a single sprite -- 3 different ones for three different faces, and other 2 for the cock (flacid vs. erect), 2 for the outline (yellow vs. red) etc. Then use the shit above for quicker changes.

Thanks a lot, guys! It worked. Shocky, your second method works perfectly to do non-contiguous pixels in a single, wide stroke. Schatten, your method is perfect for areas of the same color. Much appreciated, gentlemen.

G-Punch, I'll take the layer advice for when I create something from scratch or need to do small edits. Right now it's only about recolors.

Thanks again to all.

*snort*

GP, the end result is pony-related, as I'm helping with one of the fan-made RPGs. You sure you still want to see?
