Metallica suggestions

Post by LoneSage »

Well, thanks to Mandatory Metallica on the radio for the last few weeks I do believe early Metallica stuff (no St Anger, kthx) is my calling, even though I'm no metal fan, Metallica's 80s stuff is the shit.

so, suggest some badass Metallica albums. A few guys at neo-geo helped me with good ole Smashing Pumpkins, now let's see what the shmups guys with Metallica can pull out ;)

Start with Master Of Puppets, And Justice For All and Ride The Lightning. Then get Kill 'em all (first album, heavy as fuck) and the black album (full of radio friendly singalongs like Enter Sandman).

Ignore Load and Re-load, they're shit except for a couple of tracks. Dont go anywhere near St Anger, it's total shit.

Metallica admit that their post black album stuff is shit because they dont bother playing any of it live, except for Fuel which rocks.

...and justice for all.

Best Metallica album, hands down. What Metallica could have been if they hadn't taken the path of the black album. Actually, anything before Justice too.

And Justice For All is pretty much the only one I'd still listen to occasionally. I love it because it's Metallica at their most elaborate and consistently grim (it feels more focused than anything else they've done). Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets are good, but played out (for me) and formulaic.

I never liked "Justice" much, as I found most parts to be kinda boring.

Also, Kill em All is not "Heavy as Fuck"...as someone mentioned. It is however, early 80's "Thrash".

My two favorite Metallica albums/CD's are "Ride the Lightning" and "Master of Puppets".
Master, in my opinion being their personal best as well as most diverse.

Master of Puppets is metallica's masterpiece.

i think it's the most perfect metal album ever recorded. listen to it from start to end. it's perfect.

battery - great intro. heavy and fast.
master of puppets - title track. absolutely sick.
the thing that should not be - epic. classic. it's kinda like a rawer, better version of enter sandman.
welcome home(sanitarium) - my favorite metallica track.
disposable heroes - so epic.
leper messiah - starts off kinda weak but finishes super strong.
orion - perfect pre-outro song. epic and gorgeous.
damage, inc. - they come back to say, "wake up, we're not done yet!" sick outro song.

...and justice for all is their second best. one of my favorite concept albums. ride the lightning is great as well. fight fire with fire is a sick track.

good band. new stuff doesn't count.
say, by the way...

and in the meantime, it's gone away....

My biggest problem with And Justice For All is that the bass was completely cut out in the mixing process. Great nonetheless, though.

My favourite is still Master of Puppets.

Kill 'em All
Crreping Death/Jump in the Fire
Ride the Lightning
Master of Puppets
Garage Days Re-Revisited (best one, easy)
And Justice For All

Stay the hell away from that stupid black album and anything newer than that. It is all, without a single exception for even one song, TRASH after And Justice For All. They blew harder than any other band that once was good.

i don't think the bass was cut out in mixing; it's in there. it's just that justice was metallica's first album with jason newsted, who obviously spent the entire album slavishly following the guitars note for note. after all, jason was no cliff burton.

...but who really was?

For a bit of a laugh I'd give a listen to Major Metallica. It's a few Metallica songs performed in a major key instead of a minor key. It's amazing how the mood of the song changes.

No, I know the bass is there, but the bass levels were lowered severely in the mixing process.
