The Dororo live action film was rather good, CG and all. Just saying. Better than the Basilsk live action flick to say the least.

I watched a lot of Kenshin - about 75 episodes before I couldn't take the filler any more. It doesn't need a live action adaptation, though.

This is why I like the manga better so far. I wasn't fond of that silly filler in the anime.

Japan has many interesting directors, even aside from the well-known Kitano and Miike, like Yojiro Takita who directed Departures, or Shinya Tsukamoto of Tetsuo fame, or Kazuaki Kiriya who directed Casshern and Goemon. Surely not the worst selection among the contemporaries.

Departures! That was the one I was trying to remember the other night. Yeah, it wasn't bad. A bit too long, but a nicely directed film.
Tetsuya Nakashima deserves an honorable mention for actually being good, and Kiyoshi Kurasawa for Tokyo Sonata (which I didn't find as tremendous as hzt, but decent.)

Casshern is unmentionable though. Surely that's not considered to be an example of good modern Japanese cinema?

Well... Casshern is very much a love-it-or-hate-it film; it's not groundbreaking or anything, but it stands out thanks to its peculiar style, or a mix of styles if you take some small details into account. It's decidedly grotesque and consciously overdone, and you see the director experimenting with this approach further in Goemon—to a more coherent result, I'd say. Whereas Hollywood tries making CGI believable by seamlessly incorporating it into filmed sequences, visuals in Casshern and Goemon look intentionally surreal, almost hallucinatory in their nature. Not many filmmakers do that (Linklater instantly springs to mind), and it's a worthy pursuit in my opinion.
