So... which classic shmups should I play next?

Post by O. Van Bruce »

As i've experienced allmost all of the Cave shooters now i was preparing myself to try some classic shmup of the early 90's or the 80's. Which ones do you recomend me?

Thunder Force IV

I would list some others, but I'm not where you want to start... Do you mean Saturn or Playstation shmups too, or anything 16 bit and before?

Not really my area of expertise....in terms of 80s games...R-Type and Gradius II are quite good.

B wings. Google bwings NES online and you can play it from the site itself. Irritating bosses, but still fun imo

Raiden series is awesome, but it may make you cry.

RII is better than the original, but DX is better than RII.

Come to think of it though...early 90s.....

Well, Battle Garegga and Ray Force, come to mind...but they didn't really strike me as "oldies", as compared to the Gradius, R-Type, Raiden, and Darius games of the world.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

V-Five and TURBO FORCE

Play those two games and you'll be set for shmups made before 1996 :D

Rayforce feels pretty ahead of its time, but Garegga is from 1996. Two of my favorite games, if you're sticking to this time period you really can't go wrong with Rayforce.

I agree. Go for the Raiden series.
Great games, classic gameplay, and classic difficulty.

Plus, you can transition onto the newer 3D Raiden III and IV later if you so choose. III was ok, but IV is much better.

Late 80s/early 90s was the golden age of Irem. R-Type 1&2, Image Fight, X-Multiply, Dragon Breed, Cosmic Cop/Gallop, R-Type Leo, and the underplayed Fire Barrel. All 1993 or earlier. It still amazes me what they did graphically so early on. You get the sense that a lot of love went into them.

I prefer late Toaplan as the earlier titles feel a bit dated. Konami's horis & Darius are also great and haven't aged at all gameplay-wise.

It may be that TC wants arcade games, but he never actually specified. He said he wanted "shmups from the golden age of arcade," not "golden age arcade games."

He may just want games that have the qualities of those classic titles, regardless of platform.

Follow emphatic with Twin Cobra and add other Toaplan classics like Truxton (if it runs smoothly & has sound), Hellfire for the Bass, plus maybe Flying Shark and Fire Shark.

Dragon Saber for the soundtrack.

Nemesis/Gradius 1, Gradius II for sure.
Salamander - a must! Soundtrack and fluidity.

I'd recommend Darius, but only if you have access to the original 3-screen cab.

Gemini Wing. The hitbox is LArge but its a classic and I like the soundtrack.

R-Type & X Multiply.
Prehistoric Isle in 1930.
