The Horizontal Limbo or A Single-Plane Challenge

Post by Iron Peach »

My first thread on this board, nice to meet you all!

Recently I've been thinking of building arcade sticks specificly for some of my favorite games;
not quite recreations of the original cabinet panels, but close. A few of them have 2-way controls,
and looking at my 360 beside me got me thinking. How would a modern shooting game
play if it used the same 2-way horizontal controls, and just how much more or even less challenging
might they be?

So, anyone care to see which games can be cleared using a two-way horizontal control? What are your best scores and which games are impossible or the most fun?

I'm working on Gigawing now and Stuck is much easier to use without the Y-axis.

Lots of people in the Touhou community do no-vert runs. No-vert Psikyo, though, is horrifying. Imagine being stuck with a minimum-power ship and trying to dodge fast patterns without being able to kill enemies with short-range attacks.

Yeesh.

I know SFKhoa almost 1-all'd DoDonPachi once with no vert.

Had no idea this was a thing. :?

So there are 'low score' runs too, I suppose. Haven't tried it but low scoring 1cc does sound interesting...

Hmm, if you're building your own sticks, you could pick up some 2-way gates to help enforce this and give it a shot in various games. Could yield some interesting results.

Yep, that was exactly the inspiration. Or was it the time my local arcade's Raiden Fighters machine wouldn't register the upper diagonals, so it was deal or die. The unexpected challenge of it was what was really fun. Didn't tell the owner 'til at least fifteen credits later.

I was also requested to do a no-vert run of Progear. That didn't go so well.

There's even a no-vert option on the English score tracker.

Some players also do runs where they don't use focused movement/shots (like not using your laser in DDP). Sapz did one for EoSD and PCB.

I have been pondering about this ever since I first saw this thread, but don't really have the balls to try it out.
How about Batsugun? Special Version's first loop seems very possible, except maybe for Boss 2 and a few sections of Stage 4, where I think you'd be forced to bomb.

Shouldn't that be no-hori? No-vert would just be cruel.
