But yeah, seriously, hopefully rapidshare can manage to stay up, it seems to be the only major one still going without hiccups right now. Honestly though, once these sites started getting really popular, I figured it was only a matter of time before something like this happened.

The owner of Rapidshare had an interview recently where he defended the legality of the site and said they're standing firm until the FBI initiates something. That'll be a lot harder for them to do, because RS doesn't have servers in the US.

I don't get the rationale of paying a monthly fee for filesharing.
Not only is there the contradiction of "paying to download free stuff" but if you`re going to spend money why not spend it on a shared hosting account. For like 5$/month you can get "unlimited" storage and bandwidth with http and ftp access. To me that seems far preferable to annoying ad-laden third-party websites for distributing legitimate files. For infringing files, it can only work as long as the mpaa/riaa/whoever don`t notice you, but that goes for pretty much everything.
