I did a full translation into Danish a while back, but the general story, in short, goes something like this:

Every 200 years the people of Starfall village has to sacrifice a child to the woods, or else a plague or disease of some sort will hit the villages.

When Reko was quite young she got lost in the woods and met a young boy (I assume this is Aki from the manual). He gave her a bracelet that enabled her to understand the large creatures "koujuu" that roam the woods.
After this she frequently played in the woods alone.
The bracelet, apparently, is only given to those destined to be sacrificed.

When Reko turns 15, a plague hits the village, leaving only Reko unaffected. Her father, the king, knowing full well what is to be done, asks her to go into the woods, and Reko being the trooper that she is, accepts without hesitation, knowing that only she can save the villagers.
On her pet "koujuu", Kisoiri, she enters the woods.

The ending is too damn fast. If someone wants to capture stills, I will do the ending. The official page doesn't have the lines they say at the first of the levels/bosses, off the top of my head:

Stage 1 Boss: "It's huge!"
Stage 2 Start: "God, where are you?"
Stage 3 Start: "I've come a long way"
Stege 4 Start: "It's bright, even though I'm in a cave"
Stage 5 Boss: Reko: Sorry, forgot this one.
Aki: "You did well coming here"
After defeating him, Aki says: "I'm glad I met you."

GJP: I also remember at the stage 4 boss she says "ayashii!",
which means "shady, suspicious". I always thought that was the coolest thing she said in the game.

Yep -- that's right. Had to jog my memory.
Still can't remember the 3rd boss line. Maybe I'll break the game out tonight.

So she lives at the end and does not have to sacrfice herself? (assuming the final boss is the bug she was supposed to give her life to)

Well of course not, how would Cave cash in on the license for the follow-up puzzle game if she did? ;)

lol That's what I was thinking too. But I figured I better ask just in case so I know exactly what the heck is happening when I finally break down and credit feed to see the end. :P

Actually I've never seen the ending either (I can't even beat Arrange ), but if I had to guess I'd say that Cave wouldn't kill Reko off that easily, seeing how widely they've marketed her thus far.

from what i gather, the giant bug (and the TRUE final boss afterward) are just Aki's steeds. perhaps he needs her soul or something? :/

wtf is up when she's hugging her own beetle-steed anyway? is she happy or crying or what? i couldn't tell :(

Huh? OK, now I am really confused. So it turns out Aiki is in someway connected with/controlling the bugs? I thought he gave her the pendant so she could destroy them? :? We need one of our Japanese speaking members to clear this up a bit. :P

He gave her the bracelet because she was next in line to be sacrificed to the koujuu. An interesting sideeffect was that after receiving it, Reko could understand the bugs and communicate with them.

She says this at the stage 2 boss, in referrence to all the giant bugs in the background, I'm sure.

Wow, thank you. This helps a lot.
But if Aki wanted this to happen in the first place, then why the final fight?

As a test?

<SPOILER>
When you think about it, Aki is nearing the end of his life and needs someone to take over his duties controlling the koujuu. Aki gave Reko the bracelet to make her somewhat immune to the toxin that the insects apparently secrete, and also so that she could communicate and control the insects. The final battle, as it were, could be seen as his final test of her worthiness and her abilities to carry on his job.

Which then probably means that Aki himself was the previous person to be "sacrificed" to the koujuu, and that these protectors of the woods then have a lifespan of somewhere around 200 years+ (215 to be exact).

That sounds right on the money. And he probably met a guardian/"god" the same way Reko met Aiki.

Exactly. Only thing left unanswered is this; How does the protector of the woods (Reko, Aki etc.) protect the villagers from the disease?
Are they imbued with healing powers when chosen, which last only 200 years, and hence has to be replaced by someone else?
Do these protectors in fact "burn out"?
